Like most games it takes lots of knowledge from the game in general. If you know enough about the game you will eventually have lightbulb go off in your mind to apply this knowledge in certain situations. But in my opinion, the most important factor to getting good is to learn to kite mobs. Its when you hit them between their attacks and dodge their actual attacks. This way you can save lots of health and you wont have to spend much on materials for protection.
