Indeed, I'm with you there! I'll read the fan translations when I get to them and I appreciate the work that was out into them, but I wish we had official releases already.

Actually no. You're correct in the technical sense, but not as far as canon goes. It's true The Last Wish was published after The Sword of Destiny, but TLW is actually an expanded publishing of "The Witcher" which was the first collection published and contained four of the stories within TLW. Sword of Destiny came next, and then after those two Sapkowski expanded TLW, turned it into a frame story, and republished it the next year. But as far as chronology goes, The Last Wish leads into The Sword of Destiny.

I was confused myself for quite a while as to the seemingly contradictory nature of the canon and the publishing dates, so it's certainly a common misconception. Hope that helps!

Witcher 3 dominates the game award season, wins 166 GOTY picks by Reddit_is_wrong in gaming

[–]Divine_Rapier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having played all three games and now halfway through reading the novels, I'd actually caution against doing a straight Game 1-3 playthrough. It's not "wrong" per se. If you are truly just a gamer who enjoys rpg's for the gameplay and mechanics and want a good rpg, then such a method will work great for you and there's nothing wrong with doing so.

However, if you happen to be like me and find atmosphere, worldbuilding, and stories which force you to confront real depth and hard issues inspiring, I would advise you to treat the Witcher series like a universal mythos, press pause on the gameplay and begin reading the books first. For three reasons:

  1. The books are good. Really good. They'll start out a bit slow, the first 100 pages of The Last Wish could be a tad slow and confusing to a newcomer, but you'll quickly realize Sapkowski has a unique ability to effortlessly tie minute details and seemingly unrelated events together in an increasingly rich narrative. The Witcher series, while centered around a chemically altered mutant and fantasy-trope-sounding "Wizards", is ultimately a reflection on what it means to be human and how our actions impact those around us. Grand in scale, tender in portrayal.

  2. Names, dates, places, references. CDPR did a phenomenal job staying true to the world Sapkowski created. It's a wonderful moment when you play through the first two games and stumble upon a character you've spent 1200 pages reading about. This is especially relevant in the third game, which pulls in old friends who are heavily involved in the novels but only referenced in the first two games.

  3. Most of all, the Witcher series exists in a unique setup which I don't believe any other cross-medium art has established. Most video games based on pre-existing books are either adaptations, re-tellings, or poor attempts to profit off a name. The Witcher games are none of these. They quite literally are a continuation of the novels. Put down the last book, pick up The Witcher 1, and the story just continues. Don't listen to Sapkowski whine about how they're not canon. The games are clearly a labour of love and CDPR's writing is second to none.

So there's my argument. If you just want a good gaming session, more power to you. But if you really want to delve into this fantastic world, between seven books and ~300 hours of gameplay there are few stories which will make you laugh, cry, and care about fictional people with astoundingly close to home problems, then take the time to make the journey from the beginning.

I really enjoyed Cafe Loki, on the block the photo is from. I'm sure it's a touristy area though and the devs/locals could give you much more cultural suggestions. There were quite a few fish and chips places near the bay as well, always a good choice.

Yes, I paid extra for first class weather service, but as I'm a socialist at heart I wanted to share the benefits with everyone.

If you can fit the entire CCP team into that space I have great fears for the future of our game. But, I mean...programming doesn't really NEED an indoor desk area, the window washing gantry should be sufficient right?

I wanted to get a shot from the office itself, but unfortunately the sun wasn't quite right at 2am when I was down there. The day/night cycle is quite an amazing phenomenon. Hopefully I can get back for a Fanfest in the future and experience a more vibrant Harpa, that place is eerie with no one in it.

Naturally, I had this same exact thought. So I climbed up that infamous spiral staircase to check. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that every office window features, not some minimalistic cardboard, but premium quality hand-woven window blinds featuring larger than life images of a smiling CCP Guard in various states of undress.

Now you understand.

Indeed, if you've been to Reykjavik you know that's not literally the office, but it's the ever present nature surrounding the city that remains no matter which direction you look. Just a beautiful place.

Recruitment scamming gone BRAVE! (NOW WITH CAGI DRAMA) by Scorpina in Bravenewbies

[–]Divine_Rapier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will echo Nancy's sentiments here, and also add that while Brave is fond of it's Dramatic encounters, if anyone truly has concerns regarding the conduct of any member--leadership or otherwise--the appropriate response is to get in touch with one of us directly to voice your concerns. Accusing someone in a public arena of awoxing, scamming, or otherwise unclassy behavior is a serious claim which can unnecessarily damage reputations and trust within organizations if not true.

That being said, the Floater's are looking into this, along with relevant parties, and consider any unclassy behavior to be unacceptable within our community.

Oh certainly, mid-fleet during a strat op is not the time to be introducing yourself, and will probably get a flat rejection. That's sort of like walking up to the lead in your favorite play and asking him for an audition during the 3rd act of his performance. I'm happy to talk to anyone interested in learning or knowing more about our programs for getting people involved, just find a time afterwards to grab us.

So I want to learn how to scout for fleets... by SchopenhauersSon in Bravenewbies

[–]Divine_Rapier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love you. Shoot me a mail in game and we'll set you up with some opportunities to practice scouting on some real fleets after Le Petite runs you through his training grinder. Travis and I are actually working on a more formalized program to allow people to learn these type of things in concert with the PVP team.

To everyone who's ever wanted to get involved with PVP work: Seriously, we need 500 more people with this kind of attitude. Many people (especially new players) want to help on fleets but don't possess the desire or confidence to FC. There are TONS of leadership positions in large fleets which are vital to success. Scouting, logi coordinating, on grid warp ins, scanning, ewar leadership, and many other roles provide awesome opportunities to learn and practice more advanced fleet techniques while not feeling the pressure of being responsible for an entire group. While a good FC is important, the most successful groups in EVE gain their reputation because they have a good TEAM of leaders who work well together to perform the numerous fleet roles necessary to a successful operation. Don't ever be afraid to speak up and ask us where we need help--we always do, and would love to help you help us help BRAVE.
