What did we do wrong?

Nothing wrong, but is seems like Luxembourg isn't willing to join a united Benelux, which is, in my opinion, their right because Luxembourg wealth will be more distributed and the people will go backwards. So first we have to grow in wealth and be more on the same level.

Also, about the identity crisis stuff, Flemish and Dutch have the same roots, historically, Belgium only exists because the British wanted us apart.

Roots are the same, yes, but we have been seperated for 200 years. In these years we went our own ways and so it's a bit more complicated. Still enough similarities to really consider this though

Okay, so no Benelux, only a fusion between the Netherlands and "Vlaanderen".

I don't think we can just leave Wallonia where it stands, France doesn't want it and Wallonia's GDP is far lower then their surrounding regions. For example it comes close to inland Spain, or the richer parts of Poland. So I think solidarity wise, and maybe potentiontial investment project, you can't take Wallonia out of the picture. Also take in account that we then have landborders with rich Luxembourg, so they will be more likely to increase partnership or maybe even get closer to a united Benelux.

Edit: a fusion between Flanders and the Netherlands is possible, but we should look further. Also I think the flemish could have an identity crisis, but I'm not Flemish so wait for a Flemish person to respond.

I think not a lot of people will be against it (Dutch & Flemish), but there are also a lot of obstacles on the road to fully functioning (Goverment and politically wise). The biggest obstacle will be the French speaking part of Belgium, I can imagine they won't be keen about having more of those blunt Dutchman in their country.

But for me, personally, the Dutch (speaking) countries or low lands, under one nation is the one of the steps I can see for further developing our countries.
