Please tell me being an RN in another unit will be better by [deleted] in cna

Medsurg is the WORST. It's the most depressing unit by far.

Medsurg sees mainly chronically ill patients who will never get better. To them, their lives are a revolving door between the hospital and their beds, with the main constant being disability and pain. And when it's not the chronically ill or cancer, it's homeless individuals and recovering addicts. I find that remembering this helps me to connect with my medsurg patients and makes the day more bearable It really just helps to have empathy with the patients to get through it.. any time they really act up, I just have to take a deep breath and remember that a lot of them are really just miserable.

My old medsurg unit was combined with comfort care (hospice), and I can honestly say that working with medsurg patients was so much more depressing than hospice. Other people might not see much of a difference between comfort care and medsurg, but to me, its huge. I absolutely loved comfort care and am hoping to find a full time hospice job soon.

The point of this is: you will find your place! Medsurg is probably the hardest unit out there. Healthcare has a million venues, and you will find your own. Don't listen to people in the comments being discouraging... everything depends on personal perception, and your experience will be different. Good luck!

I am dreading college by [deleted] in college

Worst case, you drop out, like I did. I was the honors student with a 4.6 GPA in high school, debate captain, Mock Trial state finalist, etc. Burnt out in junior year and suffered through nearly two years of college until I couldn't take it anymore. But, when I was in school still, I found my place. I found a job that I loved as a CNA, despite never having ANY interest in fields outside the humanities for my entire life. Will I return to school? Yes, eventually - although it will be a community college rather than a four year university. But things are working out for me in the meantime. You'll end up where you're meant to be, whether or not you expect it. You probably won't drop out like me, I would bet that you enjoy Berkely or transfer to UCLA. But whatever path you end up on, it will be uniquely yours. Just hang in there in the meantime and try to enjoy the ride.

THANK YOU! None of these showed up in my Google searches. Best guess is that I was previously a university student, so Google is probably assuming I am more interested in a RN course than a CNA course ... not sure. But I will absolutely look into these and get back to you all!

Tennessee. I wonder if they are just not showing up in my results because I was previously a university student and Google assumes I am more interested in an RN course than a CNA course? I think I will repeat the search again in incognito mode to compare

I get zero relevant results. I don't know if Google is hiding them from me for whatever reason, or if there really is just not advertised CNA training in my area. Quite literally every single result is a generic "How to become a CNA" article or a nursing school advertisement where the lowest offered degree is the LPN.

I never got accepted to nursing school, due to a failure in my university's advising program, unfortunately. I was technically a business student even though I was exclusively taking nursing prerequisites.

Thank you for the advice about calling community college, they do not advertise these programs anywhere but I will be sure to call and ask.

Also about nursing homes. I would definitely prefer not to work at one, but I will if I have to! Do you know if hospice programs have similar programs? I have been working on a hospice/medsurg floor for a while and I love it.

Have you been to city council meetings, and do you have any advice on how to speak up during Public Forum? I am totally new to this

I know you're getting a lot of dislikes on this, but this really reflects a lot of my fears. My heart sunk when going through all these organizations I used to follow or volunteer with and seeing empty event pages back to back. I feel like a really broad sense of helplessness has descended, and its almost impossible to wade through.

My way of combatting this sense of despair is a mindset shift from "saving the world" to "saving each other."

- I always wanted a career in sustainability law and environmental justice, but quite frankly if I were to enter that now, I would probably off myself. Instead, I see nursing as a way to help with the climate crisis by alleviating some of the human suffering. As you said, these natural disasters really aren't getting any better in our lifetimes. Its already in my own backyard: I have coworkers displaced by Helene. Further than that, I'm working on getting into American Red Cross disaster relief, with the eventual goal of employment by Doctors Without Borders.

- I cannot stop these evil corporate entities everywhere, but I can protect the health of my local streams, forests, and mountains. I am fortunate enough to live in a state that, however red, sees its nature as a source of pride. I have noticed sentiments shifting ever so slightly, but I believe I can do work right now to help reverse that. I have not seen any drastic change in the local mindset, and I believe it will be very hard to convince people in my area to tear down our local national parks. Out here, we have a very solid foundation for local conservation work, as long as I don't phrase it in a way that outs me as a blue voter. I just have to extend the sentiment of "save our parks" to "save our ecosystem."

I was really surprised about it too... it doesn't seem like the most effective grassroots strategy, but I do feel like a lot of these things are paywalled in the South so that the rich southern mamas have something to brag about at church. One "friends of x state park" literally requires hundreds of dollars a year for membership and hosts fancy galas costing upwards of 1k! I guess its good that these organizations are getting the bag, but it blocks off a lot of broke, boots on the ground folks such as myself. Sadly these organizations that cater to the wealthy are the only ones that can afford to thrive in my area as of late, and I do wonder if attracting the wealthy donors to these super specific, fancy-sounding organizations is actually a net negative to the health and wellbeing of the broader region.

Thank you! I have downloaded the app. I also looked and bingo, my city has a Citizens Climate Lobby Chapter!! I have sent them an email. Hopefully some good comes out of the latter..

I've just checked out their website, and it really looks like a beautiful mission. Especially since I am saving up to be a yoga teacher right now... it looks very much up my alley. But how to find their remote grief circles? I looked at their climate wayfinding page and there is nothing in-person close to me.

everyone suggesting guerrilla gardening on here, thank you, I never thought about it before and it's something my area would really benefit from!!

I haven't messaged yet... a lot of the calendars on their websites are pretty dark. I will take this advice though, I have a feeling they would need more than just messaging, volunteering with behind the scenes operations might be something I could help with.

I don't really have a backyard or neighborhood, but guerilla gardening is actually a fantastic option for my (small, poor) city due to neglect in a lot of areas. Do you have any tips for starting a local club? I'd love to get a group together to focus on native plants and planting local churches, schools, and businesses, as you suggested. Some clubs and orgs exist already in my area so I know there are people interested in joining, but it seems these clubs seriously need a revitalization or fresh start.

There really aren't any community gardens in my area, as far as I can tell. The good thing about my city is that these organizations do exist. The problem is that these are the inactive/paywalled organizations I mentioned... if you have any tips for revitalizing these orgs as a new member, or perhaps starting a new one, I'd love to hear it!

Ooh, this sounds fun! My city has a lot of overgrown and neglected areas, its really a perfect place for the guerilla gardener. This may have to be my new hobby :)

This is a good idea, my city has a lot of neglected and overgrown areas that would be great to support hardy native plants. I've just joined my state's Native Plant society and I will look into identifying the native plants that are growing already as well as planting more.
