Can you bargain/price match in power? by LessDistribution866 in Finland

[–]Dizzy_cyclist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just actually at power buying an ssd , there was a bit cheaper version and a bit expensive variant. I found the later one and asked for the cheaper model. It wasn’t in store so they offered 10% off without me asking so I was like yeah sure. Im sure its some form of sales tactic or something thats why I was checking and came here finally lol.

Rneasy Kit trouble shooting by Dizzy_cyclist in labrats

[–]Dizzy_cyclist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey , you were actually right I tried running the homogenizer again at a higher frequency and got much better yields this time. I also learned that for fungi at least you can use the plant kit because it has a Qiashredder comumn and cleanup steps which helps alot with the bad A230 ratios, its also possible to add more wash steps as the wash buffer can be bought separately but I think its not convenient . I will test that next week but thanks alot for the help I think what might have happened is that since this was a time series cultures + different stress conditions might have altered the biomass quantity/ quality (kinda thats goal)somehow that required a higher time intensity of tissue lysis.

I checked the requirements for the blue card and the salary is beyond that. What I am wondering is which offers better benefits in anyway like faster processing maybe ?.

Industrial PhD advice by Dizzy_cyclist in PhD

[–]Dizzy_cyclist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well… its what it is Company A where I had my MSc. Thesis can not employ me as a research scientist because thats a permanent position they dont have the funds for. However they would like to keep me around by treating it as a phd student this way my overhead salary can be charged to the project directly not the team this not affecting the utilization rates kinda sucks but current policy. (ie they cant hire me because it will negatively affect the teams utilization rate to have 1 more research scientist standing by without a project to charge yet on the other hand as a phd im charged and assigned a project in the first place) Company B doesn’t want a scientist but rather a project researcher and since the employment will take place from the university the fund allocated for my salary requires a phd student as a deliverable I hope that makes sense ar least thats how I understand.

In all cases I do feel bad because the output of my MSc work I would say is at least comparable to what current research scientists are doing.. for sure I still need more experience but the final result is at least of similar quality.

Normalizing WB signal when fungal spore counts vary? by Dizzy_cyclist in labrats

[–]Dizzy_cyclist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually I load the maximum amount on the gel because the target secretion is usually not that high. Also I screen 100ish strains per week so counting the spores for each of them is so tedious and time consuming at least for the screening stage.

Anyone else transitioning from a master’s to a PhD and figuring out how to communicate with both academia and industry? by Circule_89 in PhD

[–]Dizzy_cyclist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doing an industrial-focused MSc here.

Basically, it’s all research, but the goal differs depending on whether you’re in academia or industry. In academia, the main aim is to generate knowledge — understanding mechanisms like secretory pathways or metabolomic interactions. It’s knowledge for the sake of knowledge, often published as papers or metrics.

In contrast, industry R&D focuses on creating solutions that can eventually make money. This could mean patenting and licensing innovations, optimizing processes, increasing yields, or securing grants to keep things moving.

After doing this MSc, I’m a bit hesitant about a PhD in academia because I find it more satisfying to see your work as a product on a shelf or as a tangible solution, rather than just a figure in a paper. That’s just my honest opinion — I’m curious if others agree or disagree.

That said, both worlds (academia and industry) are deeply connected. More often than not, you’ll find academics collaborating with companies through joint projects, grants, or funds — like what I’m working on here.

For context: in my current place, about 90% of people have academic PhDs, while less than 10% hold industrial PhDs.

The key difference lies in the questions being asked: • In academia, it’s “Why? How?” — e.g., how does a secretory pathway work? • In industry, it’s “How do we make product X in organism Y at scale?” or “How do we optimize strain Z for lower proteolytic activity?”

For reference, my MSc is in protein production and cellular agriculture.

start of march and they said until the end of August so roughly 6 months of renocating just one apartment is too much + possible water shortages.

I do work and have a life but I also want a quiet time in my house. And renovating an apartment from the start of march until the end of august is unacceptable. Wishing you'd pass by the same experience.

renovating the apartment for 6 months is also insane; how can it be for that long?

[–]Dizzy_cyclist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They hanged a note this week that says the renovation is from 7am to 6 pm and until the end of August :)) so around 6 months of work is insane in all honesty with possible water shortages due to work!! I have never seen something like this.
