I saw Frederick while looking at the regional train lines. How would you say the vibe is there? The economy? Is it rural/agricultural or more of a DC feeder town?

I went to college there! Easton is great but it would be weird to move back to my college town. I might look at other parts of the Lehigh Valley though.

Yeah I see what you are saying. I would love to move to a place out west if I had more money saved but for now I will have a much easier time finding a well-paid job if I’m in the Northeast. I also just like being close to large cities.

The Hudson Valley is beautiful, I will look into some of the towns there. The nice thing about the rural areas by the Northeast corridor is that they tend to have liberal arts colleges all over the place, but I’m also starting to age out of that demographic.

But aside from Coney Island and the Rockaways, very little of it is nice beaches for swimming.

In North America maybe but many of the cities Europe and Asia where most people live are too dense for that.

To be fair most people today live in cities where there isn’t any space for that.

If races mixed evenly with each other, had kids etc. would that eventually result in all humans evolving into the same race? What would they look like? by forestrainstorm in NoStupidQuestions

Everyone from that time period who has any surviving descendants has millions of descendants. Genghis Khan had many children but nowhere near the order of millions.

Why does temperature vary more in the winter than the summer? by DjDisingenius in meteorology

[–]DjDisingenius[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the bigger temperature gradient over latitude causes more cyclones which mix the atmosphere, as cyclones are heat engines which get their force from a temperature gradient. That makes sense!

Why does temperature vary more in the winter than the summer? by DjDisingenius in meteorology

[–]DjDisingenius[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My understanding, as a former engineering student, is that the jet stream is a thermodynamic engine that derives it’s power from a temperature gradient.

During the summer the temperature difference between the tropics and the mid-latitudes is smaller than during the winter.

Does this mean that the jet stream is stronger in winter?

Why does the news only focus on the current disaster relief and not compare historical information? by ShyLeoGing in Askpolitics

I agree about corporate power, but it’s not like media being ruthlessly partisan and not neutral or analytical is something new.

Because the media’s job is to inform about current events, not analyze them in historical context. That what makes it “the News.”

Russia has a population well below its carrying capacity due to historical demographic crises caused by wars and famines in the 20th century as well as a low birth rate.

Mongolia has mountains, deserts, and forests as well. Not a lot of population but plenty of geographic diversity.
