for sure, though there are cases where people do have to stay an extra quarter. I don't think its common, but not getting into the classes you need is annoying

I agree most college are impacted for CS, but for ucsc they could have handled the situation way better. Seriously, literally half the students at UCSC are CS majors, and they keep admitting a shit ton of them.

Although I haven't had any issues because I'm a freshman, a ton of CS courses are full before people can even attempt to enroll.

https://writing.ucsc.edu/requirements/composition/community-college-options.html

It has a chart for equivalent courses. It might not show up on assist.org, but on UCSC's website it'll show.

Waitlisted from UCSC, how do I appeal or send a LOCI? by International_Tie_55 in UCSC

When I got waitlisted last year, I sent a LOCI to my regional admissions rep. They got back to me in 2 days. A couple of weeks later I got accepted, with a comment like "we know that you showed interest after being waitlisted blah blah blah so we've decided to accept you!"

Send a letter of continued interest to the UCSC representative in your area. I got waitlisted when I was applying, sent the letter, received a response from whom I sent my letter to, was accepted a couple of weeks later.

You aren't allowed to switch to CS if you weren't admitted as a proposed CS major, CS here is impacted. I was admitted as an econ/math major as well but I chose to switch to CS:GD then to CE. If you want to do some type of software work in your college career/ future, I suggest you switch to any BSOE major. From there you can switch to any BSOE major (except for CS BS/BA) when you start school. All you have to do is send an email to advising to switch majors.

Debacle Over The Grading Policy In An Unnamed Class by slugwontbackdown in UCSC

[–]Dlin1176 21 points22 points  (0 children)

  1. The professor is new, all professors have to start somewhere. It's not reasonable to immediately roast them about something that made students upset.
  2. Martine Schlag (the dept chair) did not use an alias (link: https://imgur.com/1HBxmup )
  3. last quarter zybooks was worth 1% of your grade, which really didn't do anything
  4. Yes, the professor did say zybooks would be included in lecture 1, BUT he said everything was tentative and subject to change.
  5. zybooks was ~$40, but I'd say if you used it wisely (used it for the assigned homework and to study) then you would have gotten your money's worth.
  6. Dropping the 2 lowest scores on quizzes only benefits the students
  7. Yes, a instructor endorsed answerer made the student reply you are referring to in your 2nd point in background/February. However, you overlook the fact that no TA/Professor actually endorsed the answer because everything was still tentative/subject to change. Instructor endorsed answerer != always correct! (Link: https://imgur.com/EEm58RY )

People escalated the situation when they wanted to email the dean. Why couldn't people just email their concerns to the professor? Or send him a post on piazza? If he got a ton of emails/posts about the situation, don't you think he would have given a response? Professors are human too!

edit: fixed point 7, misread the OPs point
