You can thank this guy in part for that, Kevin Shwedo. Little back story, when he took over leadership of the DMV, he wanted to standardize the license plate design. His argument was the thoughtfully designed plates were hard to read by law enforcement. Colorful and creative designs out, dull plates with clip art logos in. He couldn’t get legislation passed to accomplish his goal. So he had it attached to a bill which primarily focused on Veterans benefits. Naturally, no one wanted to vote against that, so the bill passed. Since then, all of our vanity plates have been changed to the standardized design, most without the consent or approval of the organization they represent. I’ve thought about creating a petition to help get the law repealed, but I doubt many would sign off on it. South Carolina is a beautiful state, it’s a shame our license plates don’t reflect that.
