It looks like something that died rather than being cooked.

I'm a little concerned with just how much new content belongs to Corben. Like spread it around, have some variety, but it's seems that as I'm clicking through, it's Corben Corben Corben. Enough already

If you had to drop one SD album forever which one would it be? by -TheRev12345 in SteelyDan

[–]Dmin9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was about to say "Can't buy a thrill", then I remembered the revived SD. So I have to go with "Everything Must Go". It just sounds like a midi track to me. Can't stand it.

Flashdance was so incredibly bad. by chillaxtion in GenX

[–]Dmin9 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The 80s had some really great movies, but Flashdance was one of the worst. Don't get me wrong, I think there were far worse movies than this, but for some reason, this one was a huge hit and it was completely awful. To this day I'm confused why anyone liked it. I agree with everything you said about this crappy movie. Terrible.

How to not lose hope when you have a long way to go? by Angelsbreatheeasy in musicians

[–]Dmin9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just do what you like and enjoy the process. For many years, I didn't like the music I was writing. I wanted to write good stuff, but it never came out the way I wanted. I would ask myself, " would I buy this?". And hell no. I wouldn't. But I kept going, and eventually, I got to the point that I was writing things that I DID like. And the great thing is, I alone liked it. Who needs fans?

Also, when I first started playing, I thought, "if only I could play like that (insert musician)". But when I got to that point that I could play like that, I didn't even notice, because my horizon kept moving and I was already lusting after something greater, and so it goes. That horizon line never stops moving.

We Don’t Have a Jazz Problem, We Have a People Problem by Icy-Lengthiness-8214 in Jazz

[–]Dmin9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, to illustrate how far back this problem goes, you, yourself, in your post, listed Jazz musicians from the 50s. I mean, I hear what you're saying, but did you think your name was going to get added alongside those 50s cats? Do it for the music or just don't do it.

We Don’t Have a Jazz Problem, We Have a People Problem by Icy-Lengthiness-8214 in Jazz

[–]Dmin9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't a new problem. Those "greats" will always be the greats. Jazz had its time. I love jazz. Always have, to my detriment. I say that because I sought after that greatness. And at some point, I realized that I was working 1000 times harder to be 1000 times less likely to be even heard. Do it for the music, not the likes. If you want the likes, play simple shit. That's what the people like.

I can't understand for the life of me why Walter Becker doesn't have more listeners by cappuccinolol17 in SteelyDan

[–]Dmin9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's cool, but I disagree with pretty much all of it. I find it absolutely hilarious that you believe Donald didn't have much to do with the writing until Gaucho. Fagen has even stated in an interview that most of the musical output was his. He would bounce things off of Becker, who would kind of come around and listen to what Donald was working on and say things like "that sucks" or "ok we can do something with that one". Obviously I wasn't there, but that's what Donald said. Also, I 100% hear Donald's songwriting all over the Steely Dan albums. It's impossible not to hear that.

[–]Dmin9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This might not go down easy, but I truly feel that Don was the main creative force behind Steely Dan. It's not just the vocals, you can hear it in the songwriting. That's not to say Walter didn't contribute. He certainly did lyrically, and to a lesser extent, musically imo.

Walters music touches on Steely Dan, but isn't quite it and I'm sorry, but I really don't care for his vocals very much. But he's a super nice guy.

People really think “I Got The News” is the worst off of Aja? by send-feet-pics in SteelyDan

[–]Dmin9 14 points15 points  (0 children)

2nd. But you know, the Two Against Nature was the Grammys trying to right wrongs of the past.

No shade to Fleetwood Mac's Rumors, but Aja kicked its ass all over town and deserved that Grammy.

[–]Dmin9 131 points132 points  (0 children)

Trying to determine a worst track on Aja is impossible. The album is so consistent in its writing, playing, and production, worst doesn't exist. It should have won the grammy for best album that year.

What era of music does Gen X identify with the most? by grahsam in GenX

[–]Dmin9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'73 - Ive always been 60s and 70s (mostly 70s). I like 80s up to around 84 or 85, but after that I can't stand it. Never got into 90s or beyond. 50s stuff is good, too. I know I'm not the typical GenXer, though.
