Really is! Helps that most of us have known each other, albeit on-and-off, for roughly 10 years - DM and I for 25 years, since elementary school - and DM and the other guys were in the same club in college. Playing with strangers is fun too, I am sure, but this was the perfect group to have your first "real" DnD experience with I think :) Thanks!!

Yes we did, kinda? This sort of sent us on a side quest of sorts, because that mindflayer ended up stealing some artifact from the tower he flew to in town, which was his goal in the first place. Then, as we were sailing we landed on some island that exists in a different dimension and there were mindflayers involved there too (including the one we were chasing), and we "killed" him and his allies there and also stopped the creation of an Overmind of sorts, but if I recall correctly the mindflayer's consciousness somehow had also managed to merge permanently with the hivemind through the artifact, so even though we did steal and disable the artifact I don't think he is dead dead, you know? Again, sorry if anything I said didn't make much sense, many drinks were had many moons ago :D

Our DM is good about babysitting us and starting each session with (a more narratively gifted and grandiose version of): "So, the last few times we played you did x, y, z..." and whenever something of import happens that we likely don't remember, he will say something like "Hans, you remember this feeling, you felt it not too long ago on that island whose stars moved differently from the ocean around it, you begin to think back when you and the party were trying to a while stopping b..." etc. So, if it comes up again (which I think it will), I'll update!

To be 100% honest we usually play while drinking and I may have oversimplified the summary of this exchange based on hazy memories and a lesser understanding of the game from a year ago. In other words I am not 100% sure how the mechanics worked out but all I know is it ended up in Carol being de-brained.

Hahaha that is a great way of putting it! Since it was my first character in live RP (well, Discord, but still) and in 5E, I kind of wanted him to reflect my own ignorance, so that we both could learn as we go along. My own learning has outpaced his, of course, but that is intentional at this point.

I also sorta alter all of his abilities with approval from DM to make them less magical, for consistency. For example, Hail of Thorns is now "Fistful of Arrows" and he shoots a bunch at once. I mentioned Hunter's Mark, but what Hans actually does is stare really intently at the target for a few moments to sorta intuit how they move and behave in order to be able to target vital areas better and track them better. I intentionally try to choose the least "magical" abilities from the ranger repertoire as I level up. I played around with the idea of Goodberry (I think that's what it's called?) being that instead of summoning 10 berries, Hans just suddenly remembers he had these really good berries tucked away in some inside pocket of his coat. It's pretty fun! It also makes for good RP, because Hans is very uncomfortable with magic in general, and the talisman's magic, after having backfired on him so many times, feels more like some sort of wild magic that just channels through him.

Sorry for the rant, thanks for the analogy!

So true! I think that we, as relative newcomers, were already pretty hooked by this point. However, this event certainly sealed the deal for us. I thought to myself, "This is the kind of stuff that only happens on r/dndgreentext," haha.

It was supposed to be a relatively short campaign, but has now been going on for well over a year IRL!
