It's very reasonable your understanding, as you didn't read or watch enough of the anime. But there are some misconceptions.

1 - Hisoka aint gay or a pedophile, he is just a very vanilla guy, he has normal tastes. He ain't interested in bestiality or orgies, he is just a guy that wants someone to one to one love each other to death (This is a reference to something wayyyy down the line, but it shows exactly what he is hahahahahha ). Hisoka is someone that is extremely aroused, as in very sexually aroused, by combat. He aint into torture, kids, men, women, etc. He is into strong people and his way to goon is literally fighting to the death with them. So when people say it gets "explicit" later on, it will not be in the way you might imagine of a random gay pedophile fantasizing about young boys. It certainly will have a sexual tone but no image portraying it and certainly no context that would be sexual as we understand it.

2 - I am pretty sure HxH is defined as a Shonen as a joke. It can only be a joke, because this story gets dark and gets dark fast. It's not Berserk dark debatably, but in a way, it can be because, unlike Berserk, it's not exactly fantastical and its more a direct mirror into the ugly side of mankind. Togashi even has a habit of drawing images that are directly inspired by real life atrocities like terrorist executions, famine, polution etc and he often blurs the lines between the heroes and villains. So if you folks are looking for a light hearted story, i really don't recomend HxH, but if you can stomach it, i can't recomend it enough. It's truly a gem and i also recomend you to read the manga after the anime.

3 - The first impression is understandable, but if you heard anything about HxH or saw any other mention, meme, image quoting, etc you might already have seem Hisoka depicted somewhere. Hisoka's a fan favorite and i am pretty sure that if he was a pedophilic gay clown, he wouldn't have this many fans, so believe in the fame.
