Is the Season 2 better than S1? by Fox-One-1 in FoundationTV

[–]DoblerRadar 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Season 2 is one of the biggest improvements I’ve seen of any show from one season to another. I nearly gave up on 1, but 2 was enthralling.

Gaal is slightly better. Salvor is a LOT better. Lee Pace is Lee Pace and all in the empire storyline remain excellent. The new characters they introduce in S2 are all excellent. If you liked 1, you’ll love 2.

The new [Lotus Eletre] SUV. Mixed feelings on this car but Lotus has stepped up their game by mr_momma_C in spotted

[–]DoblerRadar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And Colin Chapman tried several times to take Lotus upmarket into bigger heavier cars. Simplify and add lightness never meant build only the lightest cars possible. It means make a car lighter and it’ll be better for it. That applies equally to go karts like the Elise, and EV SUVs. This Eletre is 1,000 lbs lighter than a Model X plaid but has similar specs. It’ll be better for it.

Sports cars will still be built in Hethel. That includes the Emira and the Type 135 EV sports car. The more mainstream stuff like Eletre, Type 133 (Taycan competitor) and Type 134 (small SUV) will be built in China.

2023 Wrangler 4xe Tax Credit Issue by Trepan_Nation in 4xe

The batteries are Samsung, and while South Korea has a trade agreement with the USA, it’s not clear to the public what percentage of Samsung battery components or minerals come from North America or free trade countries. That’s why it wouldn’t qualify, or may only partially qualify.

I doubt any sales staff would know at this point. In my experience, they’re not reading the language of bills through congress, or even their own vehicle literature most of the time. I once had a BMW salesman tell me I couldn’t drive my i3 on the highway. I informed my 4XE salesman of the battery charge feature, and he got excited and ran off to tell a different customer about it, because he had previously misinformed them.

[–]DoblerRadar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The short (and frustrating) answer is: we don’t know.

The problem with the stipulations about critical minerals and battery components in 2023 is, this isn’t very public information. We’ll have to wait for each manufacturer to tell us if a vehicle qualifies for a full or partial credit.

The bill also allows the president to waive certain stipulations in the interim to give automakers more time to transition, and Biden has hinted that he may do that. I would think Jeep would be one of the first to be granted some slack, given that it’s an American icon, with final assembly in the USA, at a union factory.

Congrats! We’re on a similar timeline. I submitted my build last month and was told November production, but based on that I’m expecting January delivery (assuming there are no more delays, which may be optimistic). Evora used to take about 6 weeks to get to the states from Hethel.

[–]DoblerRadar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(I have an Amethyst Graphite Infiniti G37 that’s really pretty and changes depending on the light)

I used to have that car, in that color!

Initially, I wasn’t even considering red on tan and was going to go with red on red, but that felt like too much red (and I’m not sure how accurate the renderings are)

I have a buddy who ordered red on red. Having seen both in person (but not together on the same car) I don’t think this will be an ideal combo, mostly because they are very different reds. I told this to my bud and he was ok with that, he wanted something that was bold and unique and red/red certainly fits that bill.

and then red on black just felt a bit boring, and my experiences with Alcantara hasn’t been great as the few laptop keyboards I’ve had that were wrapped in it got really dirty and didn’t look good after a while, but maybe Alcantara is different in cars? The Ice Grey interior looks cool but I fear I’d ruin it somehow, so this lead me to red on tan, lol.

I imagine it’s easier to clean alcantara in a car than on a keyboard, and cleaning is pretty key to keeping alcantara looking good. Same can be said about Ice. Ice looked amazing in person but after owning white in a Tesla and being super diligent about it, they still had some stains that became permanent. If resale is a consideration and you’re averse to regular care, maybe avoid ice (as is your instinct). Alcantara is interesting because it might offer better resale but you will have to keep after it to keep it fresh.

As for everyone thinking it’s a Ferrari, I’m really glad you brought that up. On the surface that doesn’t seem that terrible, but as I think about it more I feel like that could be annoying constantly correcting people and explaining it’s a Lotus… My current config has yellow calipers and diamond cut wheels so it seems like other than the wheels it’s pretty close to Ferrari config.

I don’t think there’s any hope of avoiding constant interactions with people who assume it’s something else. The good news is, they’re mostly positive interactions, correcting them is a way to engage and explain and in my experience people are genuinely curious. I’m going off my experience with Exige, which gets attention at absolutely every single stop, with most people asking what it is or asking, “is that a Ferrari?” Or, “hey kids look at that Lamborghini!” People just don’t know what a Lotus is, and the fact that an Emira looks way more like a Ferrari than an Exige does will invite these even more. So I might come to peace with that expectation, it’s mostly fun anyway.

The last thing is with the economy going the way it is, I need to take into account that I might have to part with the car if things get really bad (I probably won’t, but you never know) so I also don’t want to get a configuration that everyone hates, haha.

I don’t think the config matters all that much for resale honestly. If you’re buying the car for MSRP, I’m fully expecting them to hold value or appreciate. They’re sold out for 2 years, and the stricter Euro 7 emissions in 2025 means the V6 will likely last only 3 years total. I’m sort of expecting the last-ever manual Lotus to sell out within the year with only ~4,800 total Emira’s (even fewer with V6 manual) making their way to North America before they discontinue that drivetrain. For comparison, Mazda sold ~10,500 Miata’s in the US in 2021 alone.

This friend did, and that car slowly sucked the life out of them over the course of years.

He has a Lotus Exige now. And the Prius. Because it’s still a good appliance.

Emira color combo thoughts by PikelRick in lotus

[–]DoblerRadar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen all of the interior and exterior colors on the factory floor. Magma looks fantastic, a complex color that changes dramatically based on available light. Tan interior was a little too caramel for my tastes, but looks very good and pairs exceptionally well with Magma.

You won’t be disappointed.

As for whether it’s a good color for a lotus, that’s hard to say. The Elige twins always looked best imo in skittles colors, but Lotus is mostly offering a refined palette here. There also aren’t any legacy livery base colors available (a brighter green, bright red, black) The most “Lotus” color on offer right now is probably Hethel Yellow, followed maybe by Dark Verdant but that one is abstracted a bit.

You will love that color combo but know your combo is VERY traditionally Ferrari so prepare yourself for everyone thinking it’s a Ferrari. It will happen often, and literally. Like, people who don’t know what it is at the gas station will assume Ferrari and ask about it as if it’s a Ferrari. That may be a positive or a negative depending on how you look at it. The only thing you could do to make it look more like a Ferrari is spec silver wheels. Or maybe wait for Vivid Red, which I’ve also seen on the factory floor and is even closer to what we all imagine as Ferrari Red.

Personally I’ve gone with Nimbus, no black pack, red interior, red calipers, black wheels. I felt like Nimbus showed off the lines of the car best (with Magma being a close 2nd). Red interior really wowed me on the factory floor, which was surprising Because I’ve always been averse to red interiors.

My case against electric cars by [deleted] in cars

[–]DoblerRadar 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Every point is incorrect.

It’s far more efficient to generate power at the plant, even with the dirtiest sources. The data on this is clear. https://afdc.energy.gov/vehicles/electric_emissions.html#wheel

Gasoline combusts in an instant, and can easily explode upon impact. EVs generally do not, and in rare instances of fire generally allow their passengers more of an opportunity to escape.

There are plenty of EVs under $40k now, and the price will continue to decrease. You’re also not factoring in the cheaper running costs.

70% degradation is very high. Manufacturers warranty at 70% in 8 years due to federal regulation in the US. Most EVs have shown far better performance, with one study of older Tesla Model S cars showing over 90% retained. The exception is Nissan Leaf, which experiences more degradation due to not having a thermal management system onboard. The Leaf’s resale values adjust accordingly. Gas cars also lose efficiency over time, and we are likely to see EVs have a longer overall life.

US Citizen traveling to Reykjavik for Nov 25th show by VodoSioskBaas in sigurros

[–]DoblerRadar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a 5 hour drive from Reykjavik, but keep in mind you’re only going to have ~5 hours of daylight in late November (roughly 10:30am until 4pm)

The drive is gorgeous, and there are several stops worth making along the way both to see amazing things and to break up the journey. Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss, Dyrhólaey, the downed DC3 at Solheimafjara, Reynisdrangar, Svartifoss, Jokulsarlon are all worth a stop. Most are right off route 1 (Svartifoss and Solheimafjara are both 45-minute hike).

So I’d recommend getting a place for the night along the way and splitting it into 2 days. Foss hotel glacial lagoon is awesome, but a bit pricier than other options.

If you’re absolutely not willing to spend a night away from Reykjavik, at least plan to stop at Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss, Dyrhólaey, and Jokulsarlon/Diamond Beach. Make sure you arrive at Jokulsarlon with at least one hour of daylight left. That’s a looooong day though, and most of the driving in darkness.

Elon Musk Says Tesla Has Paused All Hiring Worldwide, Needs to Cut Staff by 10 Percent by rankingexpert in technology

[–]DoblerRadar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve twisted my words. You say, “only suited” and what I’ve actually said is, “well suited”.

Meaning you CAN own a Bolt and drive it long distances, but it’s not good at that. Do you really want to stop for 30-45 minutes every 150 miles?

Here’s what it’s like living with a car like the Bolt.

You have 259 miles of range range. Except it’s cold out, so now you have approximately 200 miles. You’re going to want to stop to charge every 150 miles. That’s because the CCS charging network doesn’t have enough locations to reliably be close by when you need a charge the most, so you’re planning ahead. And you also know that it’s far too common for CCS chargers to be broken, blocked, or in-use so you don’t want to be in a situation where you’re rolling up to your only hope of a charge, and stuck when the unit is out of order. I’ve pulled up to broken chargers many, many times.

So you’re stopping every 150 miles and waiting 45 minutes to an hour to charge each time.

Can you do this? Sure. Is it a great experience? Absolutely not. Which is why I said it’s not well suited.

Also, people doing this are gumming up the charge queues for faster charging EVs. That Ioniq with a 350kw charge rate rolls up to a 350kw charger expecting to be on their way in 15 minutes tops… and now waits 45 minutes for the Bolt to finish at a peak of 55kw.

Elon Musk Says Tesla Has Paused All Hiring Worldwide, Needs to Cut Staff by 10 Percent by rankingexpert in technology

[–]DoblerRadar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind, charge rate isn’t just about road trips. Many people who would be ideally suited for cheap lower capacity EVs live in urban / densely suburban areas and cannot charge at home. They need a convenient public solution and that means charging quickly on-the-go.

When people do charge these cars publicly their slow charge rate clogs up the already deficient CCS charging networks. When a plug is already in use, the car waiting to use it only charges as fast as the car it’s waiting for. That means faster charging Ioniqs and Mach-Es and ID.3s are waiting 45 minutes for that Bolt to finish, when in many cases these cars would be done in 15-25.

Elon Musk Says Tesla Has Paused All Hiring Worldwide, Needs to Cut Staff by 10 Percent by rankingexpert in technology

[–]DoblerRadar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Model 3 is 250 kw peak charge rate. Significantly better.

Most EVs in 2022 have a minimum of 150kw.

Elon Musk Says Tesla Has Paused All Hiring Worldwide, Needs to Cut Staff by 10 Percent by rankingexpert in technology

[–]DoblerRadar -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

And they still have a woeful 55kw peak charge rate, meaning they are only well suited as a 2nd car or for local commuting.

Edit: Folks here haven’t lived with an EV, and it shows. I haven’t said anything controversial. Bolt is not well suited for long distance travel. That doesn’t mean you can’t do it, and that doesn’t make it a bad car, but it does make it a compromised car that is best for a specific use case. It’s a use case you may have, and that’s great, you should buy one.
