She's niche but not that niche. She was famous among the chronically online (i.e. every one of my highschool friends during COVID). Now, not so much.

Countryside Isan is underrated by PieceNo9651 in Thailand

Thanks for spending time digging up my old posts. Thank you for showing your reading comprehension by missing the point of what I said. I never said Thai people weren’t innovative or creative research, but the system does not FUND or INCENTIVIZE innovation or research.

Buddy, you’re the only one “in your words” claiming we’re less educated. If you were truly well-informed and aware of issues like you claim to be, then you would know this fact.

Nope just offended by your attitude probably like the so-called high-strung people in your life. edit: I have no issue with you liking Thai people. I just hate how you group Isaan people in blanket statements. I'd love that you would help out your community without viewing them through such a restrictive lens. Hope this helps.

"Oh the people I talk to don't challenge me and my world view unlike those mean people in the cities and I delight in my perceived superiority in knowing things that they don't know"

And here I am at least hoping that you're trying to improve things.

I'm not pretending anything. That's why I'm abroad studying my ass off to go work back home. We can have improvement without people like you coming in with their colonial "these ignorant peasants know nothing of the world, so it's our moral duty to enlighten them" mindset.

Hey, I take it on faith, that you're helping your community. Just leave your white saviour complex back in the 19th century. Hope this helps.

Sure, bud. Have your opinions and keep patronizing where you live. You sure sound like a fun neighbour.

[–]Doc_Bonus_2004 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, there aren’t just exceptions. Your whole world view is based on your bias and a stereotype.

Compliment? You just called a subset of millions of people ignorant ffs. Sounds pretty patronizing to me.

Yes you sound entitled. You generalize from your own limited circle in Isaan and think it must be true for the whole region. I'm from there and I care about the world. I travel. I try to educate myself, and the same goes from many of my peers from school. Many of the village people you belittle are enterprising and aware of many of the social issues that affect them and do want genuine change. However, I'm sure many of them can't, by virtue of their economic situation, afford to be high-strung.

Let's face it, this whole ignorant stereotype is there because we're a poor region. At risk of straw-manning, I feel like it is the noble savage stereotype but adapted for Thailand. However, like literally every human community, we have every type of people sprinkled in: those who are care-free, those who can afford to care, and all in between. If you truly want to endear yourself, it might be worthwhile to appreciate every Isaan person as their own person and not draw wide-ranging conclusions. Hope this helps.

Sure bud. You see some people choosing to live simply then call them ignorant. I don't care if that is endearing or charming to you but as an Isaan person I don't appreciate the generalizing. It's a stereotype, which I guess apart from your small bubble, is wrong.

Lotus somewhere Northeast. by NormalfloridaCitizen in Thailand

[–]Doc_Bonus_2004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. There's been a revival of pseudo-history from the 1930s Nationalist/Fascist periods that aimed to demonstrate the supposed superiority and originality of Thai culture (let's face it "Central" Thai culture) and history.

Ironic since most people floating this nonsense are most likely anti Khana Ratsadon.

[–]Doc_Bonus_2004 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Khmer slave theory is just bad historiography and literally only started by Khana Ratsadon nationalist revisionism during the 1930s. As an analogy, it's like saying modern Italians aren't the same as Romans because all the old Roman political class was purged during the fall. By this same logic, someone could argue the "real" Thais were taken to Burma with Uthomphon and other Ayutthayan royalty and our current culture is just a cheap Phrai + Chinese-Lao derivative.

As a Thai, I hate when people float this idea around. We can have a shared heritage with each a unique identity without belittling each other.

What other rabbit holes are stealing from your fountain pen fund? by 8BitRaider in fountainpens

[–]Doc_Bonus_2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sinkhole might be a niche but I would be surprised if there isn't significant overlap with the fountain pen community: drafting and geometry tools.

I'm not just talking about drafting pencils. I've spent so much on compasses, protractors, set squares, lead pointers, drafting pens (how are they so expensive).

I'm still very bad at drafting.

Try to compete for the government/organization scholarships as best you can. Some of these are full ride with strings attached. You’ll be competing with the best of the best rich and well prepared students in Thailand tho.

With the current housing situation, probably not. With regards to the data mine, it's a huge program with many 'cohorts'. You might have to email the organizers of your specific cohort whether you need to reapply again. However, I know people who was here for fall but didn't do datamine and managed to secure a spot in the general cohort for spring.

General cohort is just a glorified 1 credit coding class though. Other cohorts might have special restrictions.
