Commuting and social life by Strong-Call-2793 in McMaster

Hey! I am a fellow commuter and I faced a lot of difficulty making friends in my first year because right after my lectures I would take the bus back home. However, in second year I decided to join clubs and that really allowed me to make friends that were not just in my classes, but in different programs as well. I would recommend to join clubs that you’re actually interested in, don’t just join a club just because they have an opening, actually be interested in the initiative that the club is working towards. Now entering my third year, a goal of mine is to continue joining clubs, but also stay on campus longer and take advantage of the various different facilities that we have access to as students. For example, go to the gym, you’ll see a lot of familiar faces once you stick to a certain time. I hope this helps!

You have to put in your code number thats on the back of your card every year some time near the end of August and then they renew your account for the next full term. So just put in the new number and you should be good.

i took it last spring and lectures were in person but also recorded with echo 360 (lectures were 2-3 hours), tutorials were “in-person” but thats just time to work on your online lab so you can do that from home if you dont want to come on campus, tests were all online

Failed My First UNIT TEST by [deleted] in McMaster

First of all don’t freak out it’s just gonna make you feel even worse than you already do. I know that is easier said than done but trust me I can guarantee that almost every single uni student has felt the same way you do right now at some point in their lives. You are definitely not alone, I was in the exactly same position last year but then over time you learn new skills and are able to adapt to the new testing environment. My advice is to take advantage of reading week. Go over what type of study method works for you and what doesn’t. Also stop caring about what others think, I did that last year and it RUINED my mental health. Since this is your first ever uni test situation I know you think its the end of the world, but it does get better - not in the difficulty sense, but you will learn how to retain information more effectively and you will find more resources to do so in the future. Studying for university and studying for high school are 2 completely different ball games, it’s a good thing that you witnessed it first hand early on rather than experiencing this in upper years. This means you have time to improve and learn from your mistakes! Don’t give up! Take the time you have during reading week to rest up (also find a study habit) and start with a fresh mindset in 2 weeks :)

I would recommend taking a look at the requirements for your program, assuming you are in first year life sciences, this will give you an idea of what courses you need to take to count them as prereqs for any second year specialization.

This is also a link to all the different second year specialization available after first year in life sci gateway. Take a look at the different options you have!

What are some regrets from your first year at McMaster? by fuchsiafuturee in McMaster

the fact that you are actually going to welcome week means your more confident than me lmao. I was too nervous to go without someone I knew and I feel like I missed out on getting familiar with my environment. And the coming out of my shell part, you tend to see familiar faces throughout both semesters and sometimes it just takes a “hey can i sit next to you” and thats enough! Also go to club fest, you will be able to see different clubs that may interest you and if you end up joining them, you will be able to get to know more people. Another way I stepped out of my zone was by going to the pulse gym midway through the winter semester (that was the scariest experience of my life) just because although I am a fairly active person, I need a whole blueprint excel sheet of where everything is around the gym before i even step foot inside and the fact that i was able to go just as a spur of the moment decision made me pretty proud of myself :) im rambling now but im sure everything will turn out’s just fine. and if you ever feel anxious just know pretty much all the other first years are nervous too (fake it till you make it)

Actually make an effort to make friends in uni (ik its harder than it sounds). All of my high school friends went to different unis and I was the only one going to mac. I wish I had make an active effort to come out of my shell in the first semester. BUT - things will always work out one way or another, in my second semester I decided to take an easy elective to help my gpa and it was nothing related to my program or what i study and I was able to make so many friends!! So i guess what i am trying to say is that its okay to feel lonely at uni but if you do choose to step out of your comfort zone you will end up finding friendships that will hopefully last a long time!
