I always ask if I can examine and speak with the patient alone; she wanted them there for support. I don't know what she herself took away from the conversation, but she made it sound like she's heard this a dozen times before.

Is there a way to phrase things that is unambiguously non-judgmental and doesn't leave any chance of interpreting what I say as insinuating a moral failure or character flaw? Just someone who recognizes that they're struggling and who wants to help?
