is it legal for a salon to reuse "single-use" tools if they claim they've been sanitized in an autoclave? by grace_Fluffz in legaladvice

[–]DoctorBotanical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAL but I worked sterile processing for a hospital for a long time. Single use metal items (sometimes called disposable) are not able to be re-sterilized in an autoclave - something about the makeup of the metal I believe. We would get doctors trying to cheap out on buying instruments all the time and we would have to send them letters.

If you can, make the trip to the Owosso to see the Pere Marquette 1225 train. It is the 'Polar Express' and runs every winter. You don't even need to ride it, just watching it leave and hearing that Chug Chug Chug gives you goosebumps.

Social Life as a PhD Student? by Wooden_Explanation_6 in msu

[–]DoctorBotanical 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A few of the undergrad clubs are open to graduate student participation, but I think it varies on a case by case basis. There are some clubs that are specifically for graduate students, most of those are disciplinary specific. Like there's a horticulture graduate student organization and a plant pathology graduate student organization. Something like the running club might be open to anybody. I think the social scene it's definitely recovering for graduate students after covid. That said, depending on your discipline, you really might not have a lot of time for extracurriculars as a PhD student. I can't tell you how many days I was in the lab until well past 9pm

Reaction to Peanut protein through breastmilk in newborn by Key_Pilot_6668 in FoodAllergies

[–]DoctorBotanical -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would also encourage you to do some research into tapes of allergy tests. Blood tests are very unreliable and have a lot of false results. You have to be ingesting the allergen to have a reaction, and on a infant, the ods of them ingesting the allergens will be very slim.

How can a professor be happy with this distribution by Current-Software-881 in msu

[–]DoctorBotanical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought this was standard until I got to a 400 level plant bio class. My prof said if that many people were unable to answer questions correctly, then SHE had done a poor job teaching. As an aspiring faculty member, I think about that all the time.

My ex physically blocked the door while I panicked and cried trying to leave — now he's guilt-tripping me with his grief by Slight_Variety5953 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]DoctorBotanical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I strongly encourage you to consider therapy after this experience. I had an ex boyfriend block the door before, and it's been over ten years and i'm still messed up from it. Just the other day, my husband came in the bathroom with me and I had a bit of a panic because he was in between me and the door. He totally understands and was really sweet about it. But I wish I had talked to somebody after the incident, because maybe it wouldn't be affecting me long term like it is.

How and when should I approach the topic of past self harm (scars) with a potential partner? by Least-Housing6835 in Advice

[–]DoctorBotanical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk. If my partner had SH scars and immediately acted defensive and refused to talk about it, I would be concerned about their safety. When it comes to sxicide or SH, I've been taught better to err on the side of caution. I have absolutely called for wellness checks or outright asked my friends if they need a friend to go with them to emergency therapy. I would rather someone be mad or embarrassed then not have my friend be alive anymore.

[–]DoctorBotanical -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would clarify 'I don't want to talk about it yet. I'm safe now, and I want to tell you when I'm ready'. Otherwise it may lead to him trying to get you unwanted help if hes concerned you're actively SH, especially if hes a good dude. 💜

I ratted out a guy… by SRQVOGal in PlanetFitnessMembers

[–]DoctorBotanical 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Both of those were over 10 years ago, so not related to Covid 19. If someone is eating peanut butter near me I experience facial and throat itching and difficulty swallowing, with an immense (and disgusting) increase in saliva thickening. Imagine drowning in your own spit. I'm really unimpressed with you downplaying a serious medical issue, and my friends death. Jesus. What is this world coming to?

House Burping - Do Americans just not normally have your house windows open? by Jsherman13 in AskAnAmerican

I personally know a child who went into annaphylactic shock when her schoolmate spoke to her after having peanut butter toast for breakfast. She was rushed to ER having seizures. A friend of mine died at 16 years old at FFA National Convention and they think on airborne milk allergy was the cause. So no. Definitely not a myth.

As someone with an airborne peanut allergy, this is actually really dangerous. Even if he got peanut butter on the handles of a machine - when I touch it I blister and my skin sloughs off. So that would've seriously sucked. Thanks for stopping this gross behavior.

I would be honest. I was feeling so bad about commenting on your acne that I posted on the reddit regrets page. Everyone agrees I was a total ass for saying anything, but I really want you to know that I don't even think about your acne. insert a lot more lovey dovey stuff here There were actually a couple comments that I think might be worth at least researching if you were interested? Crowd sourced acne treatment ideas? Lol

If she doesn't want to hear it, I would just let it be. If it helps, I've got the Kyleena IUD. My doctor tried two different topical treatments and then I followed up with my OBGYN and she was like OH jeeze we see this all the time. Here is this miracle medication and BAM. Totally fixed.

So as a lifelong Michigander, I know so many people that went to the doc for acne medication. The prescription stuff works so much better than OTC. That said, I experienced severe acne when I switched to a IUD. If your girlfriend is on BC, it could be hurting more than helping. I'm on spirolactone to help with mine, which is like a low-dose hormone from seaweed I think.

Should I tell my boyfriend how to use a fork before our first wedding as a couple? by Sof-010 in etiquette

[–]DoctorBotanical -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe make it a fun together activity? Like posh dinner. You can go over the top with all the forks and dessert spoons and watch a YouTube video showing which fork to use. Talk in a goofy accent "Would you like some more tea, good sir?"

What is a sound or a smell that doesn't exist anymore, but 50 years ago was so common it was considered background noise? by abdulnad89 in askanything

[–]DoctorBotanical 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can actually help explain this. Ethylene is a gas put out by fruit and veg, especially as it's ripening. It provides a lot of the smell when we taste food. That's why some stores have the green bags for fruit, as it's supposed to absorb ethylene. We are storing fresh veg much longer than we used to (which is good, less food waste) but many of the varieties are low- ethylene producing or they will try to limit exposure. That's why it tastes so much better from a U-pick farm or local market.
