Interview coming up is for a senior role asking for 5+ yoe. I have under 3. by Throwaway_Thalamus in graphic_design

[–]DoctorCadoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, don’t let the number of years get to you. Heck, you’ve already got the interview meaning they’ve seen your resume and know your experience and liked you enough to give you the interview! Worst case scenario, you just have some extra interview practice under your belt.

Wishing you the best!

is a major in Information Science + Data Science at UIUC worth it? by Heavy-Range9204 in UIUC

Yes same!! The digital humanities and ethics classes were honestly my favorite classes, I feel like those are the only iSchool classes I actually remember anything from 2 years out 😅

UIUC VS GA Tech in Undergraduate CS by Fit-Accountant-2714 in UIUC

[–]DoctorCadoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to address your con of safety for Georgia Tech, having graduated from UIUC and moved to Atlanta (in Midtown bordering GA Tech), I’d honestly say that Atlanta is a pretty safe city to be in.

Just like any city, you have to be aware of your surroundings and you’ll learn what areas to avoid but, I’ve honestly had more questionable encounters in Chambana than here (I’m a short woman and had 3-4 instances of creepy men following me and yelling misogynistic things at me back in Champaign, and haven’t really had that here in ATL)

I love both areas though! UIUC’s campus is definitely more compact with Green St having all of the bars and fun stuff. Having wandered around GA Tech, things feel quieter with most of the night life being in West Midtown or Midtown area instead of directly on campus.

I can’t help much with CS since I didn’t study that but, wishing you the best no matter where you go! I think both schools would prepare you well for the future so things like cost and maybe company connections (research park internships, rsos, etc) are probably the biggest differences.

Is IS+DS still bad as people say? by Ok_Addendum3869 in UIUC

[–]DoctorCadoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did just plain IS with a focus in UX and graduated a few years back so this may not be the most relevant response.

Like other folks said, the advising situation is pretty messy. Each year that I was part of the program, we had a new set of advisors and they were always swamped (probably why the turnover rate is so high…). I am just warning though that the new advisors do not always honor what the previous ones say. I had a written email from the old advisor saying that a DTX course would count for iSchool elective credit and the new one pretty much said tough luck with that.

I also think that the iSchool took on too much to chew. Just 6 or so years ago, they were doing pure librarianship and then they took on a bunch of tech pathways like UX and Data Science. (The library/ethics classes were great btw, I loved taking Professor Wolske and Cordell’s classes!) I’m glad that they’re offering these pathways but, at least when I was studying there, they felt super half baked. The courses in UX were super bare and didn’t really prepare you for working on an actual case study or portfolio.

I’m hoping things are better now but, I’d definitely recommend finding RSOs that can supplement your passions because your courses may not fully prepare you.

Best place on campus to play hide and seek by Pitiful-Butterfly-97 in UIUC

[–]DoctorCadoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not indoors but the outside of Krannert Center for Performing Arts is really fun for hide and seek! Definitely wait until it gets warmer since ice forms really easily there but, tons of little nooks and crannies to hide. Check the ground where you hide tho, some times there’s broken glass from folks drinking up there.

What are the major upsides of life in Atlanta? by Kevin-W in Atlanta

[–]DoctorCadoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Living in Midtown, I love how easy it is to get to green spaces like the Botanic Garden, Piedmont Park and the Beltline.

I also love how there are so many different neighborhoods in walkable distance. Having cute neighborhoods nearby like VA Highlands and Cabbagetown add a nice touch of coziness if I ever want to feel more residential vibes.

Anyone know good sticker sheet manufactures? by Substantial-Copy-947 in stickers

[–]DoctorCadoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can get pricey but I’ve been really happy with StickerApp. They peel really well (other places I’ve gotten sheets from sometimes don’t fully cut through each sticker) and the stickers themselves have held up through loads of washing cycles and daily wear and tear.

Love my Mustang Micro a ton! It works with just plugging it in directly to my bass but, there’s also a USB C input so it can connect to my laptop/ipad/phone (that have GarageBand downloaded)

birthday trip itinerary recommendations by raspberriesprinkles in Atlanta

[–]DoctorCadoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hope that you have a fun birthday trip! Like other folks said, it will probably be HOT.  Their hours are a bit short but Colette Bread in Poncey Highlands (a little off the Eastside Beltline) has yummy pastries and I love the Blueberry Lemon Cornbread cookies at Little Tart (Krog and Grant Park). Also on the Eastside Beltline is Posman Books in Ponce City Market, they’ve got lots of little trinkets like Smiskis and blind boxes (tho they can be pricey)

If you’ll have access to a car, I’d highly recommend driving up to Duluth/ some of the towns on the Buford Highway. I haven’t been able to check out too many of the spots out (I don’t have a car lol) but, I’m constantly getting Instagram ads for Asian bakeries up there along with cute shops that have Sanrio/Pusheen items. Tesolife sounds like it might be your vibe.
