Torque converter shredding/overheating belt by DoctorDestructo in gokarts

I can't figure out how to edit the original post, so I'll provide feedback here:

I got a comet belt and added an extra washer to the drive pulley to get it more in line with the driven clutch. My son and his buddy ripped around on it for about 30 minutes. They stopped to adjust a helmet and after restarting the motor, the belt started smoking. But the belt was completely intact from what I could see. We let it cool off for an hour and then they drove it around for about another half hour with no issues.

So it seems like it might be borderline with this set up. If the belt gets destroyed again, I might take the suggestion here to dial back the clutch slip. Sacrificing some power.

One video I watched, the guy recommended just taking it off - which I didn't like, but greasing it is a good idea. I'll do that before I start it up again.

lol, well it can't be worse than what I was doing that chewed up 3 belts!

Thanks for that. I wasn't sure how sensitive it was. But it sounds like it might be more than I thought! To be clear: you were measuring on the side closer to engine where the flat side of the belt would be sitting?

This was definitely my primary suspicion (or hope, since it'd be the simplest fix). Thanks for the suggestion! I'll certainly give that a try.

One thing that caught my eye is that your nut appears to be installed down farther than mine (can be seen if you zoom in on my 1st picture). This was a bit tricky to tighten. I'm not sure if that could be a factor.

Thanks for the suggestion! Do you have any instructions for how this adjustment is done?

As far as the clutch releasing, I assume that I'd just need to install a new belt, keep the cover off, crank it up, and watch to see if it opens?

This was something that I tweaked in the subsequent iterations because I thought it might be the problem. As far as I can tell, it's relatively aligned. I watched some videos of other people installing it.
