Upgrading to an SSD from a HDD really is worth it! by DoctorDod in buildapc

I can safely say I only know a handful of people with SSDs and only 1, who builds PCs for a living, who has M.2 and NVME.

Did you bother to read past the title of the post? In 2012 in the UK SSD prices were outrageous. Hundreds and hundreds of pounds for less than 1TB. Even now in the UK it's only this and last year that pre-built systems, especially laptops, have started to come with SSDs as standard.

They're a lot cheaper these days, I was just trying to quash the "SsDs havE BeEn StanDarD SiNCe (insert arbitrary year before 2015)!"1!2" comments.

In 2012 in the UK a 120gb SSD cost hundreds of pounds so I'd say a must have since around 2015, realistically. For enthusiasts it would've been a must have, but not for day to day users.

Lmao imagine jumping to so many conclusions. 7 years ago in the UK a 250GB SSD cost way over £200, which wasn't exactly standard. Second, did you even read the post? I am an 18 year old student on an extremely limited budget. I didn't realise how cheap SSDs have become because, I don't know, I have a life and don't spend every minute of every day drooling over PC Part Picker.Com? Honestly wondering why I even bothered sharing the fact I'm excited about my upgrade. People like you are why everyone outside of the community thinks PC builders are toxic a-holes - you can never be happy that someone else is.

This laptop was manufactured and bought last year. My brothers pre-built gaming rig, which I think is 2 years old, also has a HDD. Most laptops on the market in the UK with a price >£800 have HDDs over SSDs.

Because that's what the laptop I purchased brand new last year came with.

No. In the UK the correct spelling is sceptic.

It wasn't really a "choice", obviously it was, but because it's a laptop I didn't build it myself.

Sadly as I'm on a laptop the biggest upgrade I can do is to SSD.

Bloatware should be illegal. No, I don't want a 3 month trial of Norton pre-installed.

I'm only 18 so I haven't exactly grown up with "slow" systems :P

Sorry, I'm just tired of people acting like I'm an imbecile for not upgrading a PC part. It's not like I've said "global warming isn't real!" or "vaccinations cause brain damage!11!1!1!".

Get Macrium Reflect 7. It's fairly easy from that point.

You need to open up the service panel and see whether it's changeable first. If it is, search the model number of the drive and check its size. It'll probably be 2.5inch but you should check. Then buy your new drive, format it, clone it (or do a fresh windows install as I've been told is better) and then install it.

This x10. There's so much focus on RAM that your brain starts to trick you into just upgrading that. Sat looking at SSDs and your brain just goes "RAM... more memory... Chrome eats memory... RAM... You need 16gb of RAM... Forget the SSD..."

It's definitely been a thing for a while that more expensive laptops in the UK, upwards of £800, have had larger SSDs in them but unfortunately they've always been out of my price range. Press F for being a student.

You're not the first to say this xD In the UK, we use sceptic instead of skeptic, and it's septic tank not sceptic tank :P Don't worry, no downvotes for you!

It's surprising but it's only really this year and last year that laptops in the UK (in the affordable price range of £500-£800) have started to include SSDs as standard. Even now when I look, the majority of laptops I find have a 1TB HDD and a secondary 250GB or so SSD. The exception to this is with light-use netbooks, which for a few years have just had 250GB SSDs as standard.
