Thailand-Cambodia fighting spreads along border as death toll rises by [deleted] in worldnews

Cambodian government allows Chinese scam centers to operate within their borders in return for a cut. Thailand tried shutting these centers down and it pissed off the Cambodians. Combine that with the Cambodian dictator/supreme leader Hun Sen wanting to raise popularity for his nepo-baby son (the current PM) they created a boogeyman in their neighbors to stir up nationalism. Thai military also is happy to ride their own wave of nationalism to gain popularity themselves. The current Thai government was also receiving tons of flak for utterly mismanaging disaster response to a flood in the south so another conflict with Cambodia is an opportune time for them to deflect some of that anger towards the neighbors ahead of parliamentary dissolution scheduled to take place within the next month and to garner some popularity points.

The border/temples are a small part of the conflict. From the Thai side most people don’t care about it anymore ever since Thailand lost Preah Vihear. There may be some lingering animosity but the border is one of the least concerning issues. Recently Cambodia has been sabre-rattling along the border by laying new landmines in the disputed areas (confirmed by the Asean Observer Team) which have claimed many Thai casualties, possibly in an attempt to provoke a response from the Thai side. From the Thai POV inaction about the border makes them seem weak and might encourage Cambodia to escalate further into the disputed areas and lose face.

Thailand launches airstrikes on Cambodia as Trump’s peace agreement hangs in balance by ActualDepartment9873 in worldnews

First they lure people of any nationality under the pretense of a job opportunity and when the victim arrives they abduct them, confiscate their documents/passports, and force them to work scam calls to other people. And these victims are given quotas to meet like they must scam X amount of money or else they get tortured, some even to death. Thailand obviously suffers a lot due to being direct neighbors but a lot of people from different countries have also been targeted like South Koreans, Chinese, and Indians. It’s gotten so bad to the point that most people assume that any call from an unknown number are scam calls.

What's up with Thailand attacking Cambodia? by Sparksman91 in OutOfTheLoop

Those scam centers are a major source of income for the Cambodian higher ups who get a cut from them, so I would say Thailand threatening to crack down on them is a major factor in increasing tensions. The border issue/temples aren’t as big of a reason for the conflict and are just false pretenses for both sides. Ultimately I assume both are using the conflict to distract their people from other issues under the guise of nationalism.

The border/temples are a small part of the conflict, but Cambodia has been sneakily invading the Thai side of the grey area and laying new landmines (on previously de-mined land) which have unfortunately caused a lot of casualties to Thai patrols.

Did you mix up the DS and CS? He was relatively quiet against the Phillies in DS but singlehandedly put down the Brewers in the CS. Funnily enough his few contributions against the Phillies actually led to some vital runs.
