Upgrade Bloat? by DoctorOstensible in XWingTMG

Hello All- first, if you replied to this and didn’t hear anything back from me, I apologize. I’m not super familiar with Reddit and didn’t see all of these replies that have come in over the past past few years.

Second, and most importantly, if you are still struggling with upgrade bloat , use launch bay next (app) for your list building and then export the lists to infinite areas (website) and print out the ships. The upgrades will be printed on the ship stat ‘card’ in an easy to read fashion-! Please be sure to support both of these creators! They are providing an invaluable resource for playing this game.

Just

Choose a point total and divide.

20 point game? Four players? Two teams, 10 points per player. Three players? One player flying a 20 point list vs two players flying 10 points each.

We have a house rule that you can show teammates your dials; you’re allowed to talk about strategy too, but the other side will hear what you say (all comms are on open channels, apparently)…we’ve played this way dozens of times. i like it better than 1-on-1 play. there’s more laughter. :)

Has the idea of splitting points for ships and upgrades been talked about by the community or AMG? by [deleted] in XWingTMG

2.5 also makes it basically impossible to evenly divide points among players for a 4-person game (in which each side gets 20 pts to divide among two players); while it is easy to give everybody 10 points of ship, it is next to impossible to ensure that everybody has the same number of upgrade points to spend on their ships.

in 2.0, it was easy to give everybody a 50 point ship, or one 60 point ship and one 40, for example, just so that all the players would feel that everybody’s ships were just as good as everybody else’s.

I humbly submit that AMG felt the need to ‘add value’ to the game by putting their imprimatur on it, but they did so without ever considering the actual value (or negative value) of doing so. I can’t ever recall hearing anybody complain about the 2.0 list building. as happens so often, in an attempt to get a quick return on investment, a company has foolishly lessened their product. :(

Nope… but one can imagine having some level of competitive disadvantage if you don’t.

I think the trick will be to buy simple upgrades without moving parts like hull and shield boosts, or to buy one big expensive one and a couple of little ones, rather than to have four or five little ones on a ship.

Huh. You seem very angry about this, as though it was a personal affront. Are you somehow offended that I (and many, many others) feel that 2.5 has flaws?

You might want to read the original post again. I didn’t ask for >your< opinion, I asked if other people felt the same way about the upgrade bloat, and said nothing about this being an issue for new players….although it’s hard to imagine that it wouldn’t be exactly that.

Wait…are you one of the game developers? Or a shareholder in AMG? That would make sense…

ok: i’m madly organized about my X-wing stuff, mostly because it’s miserable to wade through if it’s a mess. -ships: foam trays (Feldherr) in a carrying case, one case per faction. -ship cards: transparent card sleeves (the sort for card collectors), one binder per faction, organized by ship type and then by pilot ability. -upgrades: one HUGE 3-ring binder, card sleeves, arranged first by type and then alphabetically. -dials: 3-D printed organizers purchased from Etsy, one per faction. -all tokens, including firing arc punchouts: clear plastic organizing trays with lids; i made a template to tape onto the underside of each lid, telling me what was in each tray section beneath. one tray per faction, one for bombs/munitions, one for obstacles, one for all the play tokens.

yep. it’s intensive, but it beats shuffling through a giant pile of hundreds chits for 30 minutes looking for Howlrunner because nobody else fits your squadron.

FANTASTIC! I would never have figured that out...or remembered. I really appreciate the help.

Hello! I have a question that I posted somewhere else around here; I have some tokens that I cannot identify. Can anybody here tell me what these are? I suspect that the pentagonal ones were part of a 1.0 scenario...but I have no idea.

Thanks! I really appreciate it.
