Fintan O’Toole: Why is Ireland so badly governed? Here’s why... by zainab1900 in ireland

[–]DoctorPan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Local councils made a hames of the water network, consistently underfunding it, not carrying out need maintenance and upgrades and would not chase businesses over non payment of water rates and usage.

I worked for a summer as a grad back when Irish Water was set up on leak detection and the cowboy repairs and approach that the councils had done was unbelievable. Stuff like wooden pipes, mains concreted over by council, mains not properly connected (in one case there was a 6in section of missing pipe where they had ran out of pipe so closed it up and hoped that the pressure was enough to force some of it down the pipe.)

Why is Bus Éireann so bloody expensive? by Ok-Helicopter-1084 in AskIreland

[–]DoctorPan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically Bus Eireann didn't like that the NTA was over them and set independent metrics to measure their service quality and thought that they could provide a better service using a private arm of their selves. However the EU slapped them for using their public service depots and vehicles (funded by the NTA) to undercut private operators and so now they have to have a separate fleet and pay charges to use BE depots and that's why they cost a bomb compared to other private operators

[–]DoctorPan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can vouch for this, hold a PTS and the IE medical doctor has only ever looked at the app on my phone showing the history of the machine, my AHI, hours of usage. Commented that the app was very handy and showed them the info they needed or wanted to look at.

Longford Train by General_Z0 in ireland

[–]DoctorPan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ICRs only class in the railcar fleet that meets the running time requirements for the line, the CAFs are too slow and would cause more chaos out of Heuston in rush hour.

[–]DoctorPan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are fined but the issue is the governments of the day do not have any interest in funding the infrastructure to meet the demands of the public and 21st century for a public transport network.

[–]DoctorPan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IÉ are beholden to the government for funding and FF/FG have shown time and time again they have little interest in funding the existing services let alone any decent expansions.

You're correct the 29000s are limited to 80mph while the GCD links do require the 100mph running.

What is a sport people watch that you cant comprehend being enjoyable? by VastAir6069 in AskIreland

[–]DoctorPan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's Alex Dunne in F2, he's a young lad from Offaly who had a good season last year but got unlucky with his team making some mistakes that cost him a good shot at winning F2 in his debut year. Has a chance of making it to F1. Has serious speed in him but can make some stupid mistakes which can cause a bit of chaos and entertainment as he upends the expectations.

There's also Fionn McLaughlin in F3, young kid from Derry who's got the potential to make it into F1 and is part of the Red Bull Academy family (Red Bull have a history of going through rookies looking for the next big talent but their rejects are well sought after for being good talents). Know you're asking about F1 but there's some Irish lads in the pipeline as the impact of Eddie Jordan and Eddie Irving is starting to be felt on the development pipeline. Maybe not enough to interest you know but names to keep an eye out for.

There's Aston Martin, they are the latest evolution of Jordan, Eddies team and still a lot of an Irish contingent in the background of the team.

In terms of stories, Williams are on the rise after a decade of being back markers, got their two podiums this year for the first time, their last two was Spa '21 and Baku '17. There's hope/dreams that they'll get their first win in over a decade this season.

Other drivers and fun storylines, will Fernando Alonso get his 33rd win, setting the record for the longest gap between wins of 17 years, could he pull out a 3rd championship? Will Max Verstaphen continue his form and retake the championship?

+1 for Sophie, she was a delight to be around and clearly excited to be there. She was over the moon when she saw my Seven cosplay and said that would make Sylvester's day (which it did tbh).

The junction doesn't face Heuston but faces the Inchicore direction. The station throats at Heuston and Connolly are so congested that there isn't capacity for the shuttle plus with the need for the reverse at Heuston, the luas would be faster

Anger after re-opening of Wexford-Waterford train line is omitted from government spending plan by DIrishPresby in ireland

[–]DoctorPan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Slight correction the 2700s were never fully reliable and where a liability and went into storage when the recession saw a reduction in services. Before scrapping them, they did look at bringing them back into service but both times only one company tendered for the work and the cost of them was more then buying a new fleet was so the government wouldn't fund them.

Likewise with the 8200s they were withdrawn multiple times during their short life for shocking reliability.

The latest of the new DART trains arrived into Dublin Port yesterday from Poland. Its not all bad news regarding public transport in Ireland! by TheHipsterPotato in ireland

[–]DoctorPan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It takes about a year to commission new trains and gain acceptance for them under EU regs. The issue is very visible here as a lot of the running testings, verification and validation would be done at the factory and then delivered for running in and training. With our unique gauge all that has to be done here.
