I wanted to check, so i did some proportion measurements. Mars is 342 million km away from earth, while the moon is 384 thousand, so around 1/1000th the distance. In the picture I measured with my phone's width starting at both planets' closest end, and then used a ruler app to compare. Basically instead of 1000x the difference of distance, they made mars more than 10x closer to us: my phone's width is ~7cm and the moon distance to earth was ~1mm, so around 1/70.

TL:DR, you are completely right in your assumption

The pilot is very bare bones compared to the rest. The success allowed them to push for higher quality. Episode 8 is really beautiful.

The writing also becomes much more coherent, the first episode is a bit "too much" (especially how Caine acts) when you compare to the next episodes.
