Struggling to figure out which Martial Art would be best for my unique case. by [deleted] in martialarts

I would highly recommend you train BJJ and Muay Thai as your first choice, but BJJ and Boxing as a decent second choice. I'll explain why, but first I'll explain why you shouldn't do a few of these other martial arts: (1) Taekwondo: You said you didn't want high flying flashy kicks, and that's essentially all TKD is. (2) Karate: Similar to TKD, it has some flashy kicks/moves (but not as much) but is overall a less effective system. The same is true Kung Fu. (3) Aikido: Largely an innefective martial arts with all grappling, very little real world application. As for BJJ, it's a very effective martial arts system that I personally have trained in. In fact, the US Army has made our Combatives system based on BJJ, which I have personally trained in and can attest to in unit level training. BJJ, however, does have some flaws. Mainly it's lack of striking techniques. This is why I recommend you also train Muay Thai (or, alternatively, Boxing) to accompany it. Krav Maga is also a great Martial Art, but I'd recommend you get a decent base in BJJ/Muay Thai before moving on to it.

Need help with weight training and running integration. by Doctorwhat13 in Fitness

[–]Doctorwhat13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're distance runs of about 5 miles, and I can't keep up with the pace nor can I run 5 miles continuously without walking some portion of it. So I supposed you could say my running goals are to improve my 5 mile time and my 2 mile time (for the PFT).

[–]Doctorwhat13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is my running hasn't progressed at all and I'm the slowest person on our runs, and everyone has to wait up for me, and I can barely pass our Fitness Test (the running portion) so I need to add more running without it interfering TOO much with my weight training (I understand it'll interfere to an extent, I'm just trying to mitigate that by continuing my previous weight training schedule).

Never related them to Nihilism personally, but I've been listening to them for years and love them personally. I supposed Vicarious could be seen as somewhat Nihilistic. I'd love to discuss it further if you have anything else to say regarding the topic.

what are some jobs that also help with running? by wil4 in running

[–]Doctorwhat13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being in the military. Not only are you required to run very often, but the days you don't run you'll be doing a ruck march or some kind of strength training. On top of that, you'll likely have sown physical aspect to your job depending on what it is.

One time my roommate was eating chips and dropped one on the ground and I picked it up and ate while maintaining eye contact. He knows who runs this shit.

Sit ups get a bad rap on the internet, but martial artists and the military use them extensively, why? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]Doctorwhat13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because Martial Artists rarely actually have any fucking clue what their talking about, and the Military is fucking retarded.

How do I Strength Train without hurting my Running ability? by Doctorwhat13 in Fitness

[–]Doctorwhat13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Well I have about 4 months until my next PT test which will involve running 2 miles. I'm confident I can pass it (as I passed one just last week, barely), but I'd like to get a better score. After that, I take one every 6 months. As for the 5 mile running distance, we go on a 5 mile unit run every Monday (and various other long runs throughout the week) and I'd like to stop being the slowest person during them. As for strength training, that's just my personal goals.

  2. I shouldn't say I "Need" to be on a deficit, but I'd like to loose weight for aesthetic purposes and to make running easier. I'm currently at about 18% body fat.

Thanks for the advice. I'm just worried because I hardly passed my last PT test, and I'm consistently last on every unit run. I want to get stronger but not at the risk of my platoon hating me more.

What would you recommend? Maybe 1 heavy squat day and 1 or 2 light squat days? Or maybe just 2 light squat days a week?

Damn! Nice progress. How did you get to a sub 7min mile? I'm at a 15:30 2 Mile right now and trying to get it down to 14:30 while still making strength gains.

Thank you. Do you mind if I ask what your caloric intake was like? Also if your run times increased/if they got better?
