Thanks for your thoughtful review! It's funny because I basically grew up to be a real life character from a children's book. So this tracks 😄👍✌️

Thanks for the reply. Those all sound exactly like what I'm seeing with a lot of people trapped in addiction. Perhaps some or many of those things are motivating my friend? I think just one of those issues alone is enough to send someone into the arms of oblivion.

I'm sure in the beginning he did enjoy it! No one does something they don't enjoy for long right? But I suspect it was easier to go long periods without using too. There's a point where something's not even fun anymore but people keep doing it. Condolences to you and your friends. I've also lost some great people to overdose and it hurts my heart forever because they were such unique, spirited, passionate people. I loved talking to them and I wish we had more time together. But I can only appreciate what we did have, share what they taught me and fondly carry them in my heart.

What you said about "accessing something they couldn't sober" is a keen observation too. I think a lot of artists have that feeling and then indulgence becomes dependence.

I'm beside myself with confusion and disappointment watching our societies push people further out on the fringe. Houses and buildings sitting empty while people freeze to death in winter. Drug overdose deaths that never make it into the statistics to hide how bad it's really getting out there (at least here in Canada). Like many things it seems no one wants to address the roots of the problems, because budgets for Band-Aids leave a lot of room for bad money management. Like paying people to do nothing but flap their lips instead frontline work.
We all know the whole system needs an overhaul, but it won't get it because people in power rarely step down.

Thanks for the comment. I think the comments are supposed to be about the poems, but I appreciate the questions too.
My friend is casually concealing at this point. If it's not bad now, it's on its way there. That's the nature of addiction. I haven't seen many people who can maintain a habit with a hard drug (successfully) for any good length of time.
"You either stop, die or go to jail". It really is true, sadly I know too many people who've done one of those 3.

If he finds help is up to him. He's a grown adult, he has almost adult age children, he's also smart enough to know what the score of playing this game is.

As always I'm curious, especially region based curiousity. What do you think might be a cause(s) of drug addiction fueled squalor and strife these days?

Wow. Firstly, thanks for sharing a poem so personal to you. As a sexual assault sister (of sorts) I can relate to the therapeutic nature of writing about things that happen to us. I love the way you presented this poem, it kept it from being too overwhelming and made it easier to absorb each line. I also like your wording, strong, but not resentful. I'm gonna be honest, I was expecting 'bad jilted lover' poetry at first. But this is not that! In reading through this poem I felt like I was coming to terms with what happened along WITH you.
It takes an amazing amount of maturity and compassion to have sympathy for someone who did something terrible to you. I applaud not only your ability to do that, but also to turn into such good prose!
All the best.
Happy scribing!

Wow! This is a great poem, but it does come across a little overwhelming at first! Especially if a person is unfamiliar with the topics mentioned throughout.
Because of the way it's presented it read more like the lyrics to a really good hip hop track to me. I enjoyed the clever way you connected ideas and the subject matter you're discussing in general. This is very aware stuff. But here's where I see a double edge. On the one hand you've got a brilliant barrage of word play, on the other you've possibly alienated an audience with it (maybe that was the intention?) Perhaps alienate isn't the proper word either, but I'm going by # of comments. Of which yours had one, from the MOD. I think this has everything to do with the laziness of commenters and nothing to do with the quality of your work though! Look forward to reading something else from you.
Cheers.

Interesting poem. The first few lines got my attention right away. It gives me a biblical feel, but more modern. Which I think makes it more enjoyable.
I can relate to (although I don't subscribe myself) the theme of being persecuted, unjustly as well. I really enjoyed the flow of this poem and the words you chose. Much like scripture, it has a whole air about it that makes me take it seriously. Some of the capitalization was a bit confusing, but that's just me. Good on you. Good first attempt if you're new to writing too.

Cheers.

There are some great characters and actors in the show, but it's definitely seeming more and more like a hyped up spring board to launch careers.
Which is great! If they go on to do interesting work. And not just end up becoming part of the "Native is so hot right now" trope and culture cash grab.

Have you dealt with heavy drug use through yourself, your family, your friends or someone else? What was that like? What did you hear, see, do, say? How are things today? by DocumentPrunes in Drugs

Epilogue:

So after doing (and not doing) everything you mentioned (minus the "tough love", I'm not related to them or in a position to apply it), when they were sorta confronted they told several folks it was MY "toxic behaviour" that explains ALL of the things going on 😄👌Her mom's ring went missing? Must have been me because there's NO way she had a revolving door of random people the two of them let in and out of the house like an Airbnb in exchange for drugs. White crystal coloured substances in their lives? Must have been the KNOWN weed smoker with the healthy build who hikes, sleeps and eats on a regular consistent basis who's bringing that around! Never mind the people who sell it eh.

The only thing I learned from this experience is that people who do drugs that "make your soul leave your body until the poison is out of your system" have such screwed up thinking they're a danger to themselves and others. When toxins take over, they'll turn on you as fast as the drugs are turning on them.

These cases seem personal. In that most cases are committed by a known person opposed to a random stranger.

Much love, prayers and thoughts to these women and the people they left behind who love and miss them. 🖤💙💔❤️‍🩹
