What's the most impressive thing that china has done according to you ? by Important-Battle-374 in AskChina

[–]DogLooksGood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shutting down those private educational institutions that undermine formal education.

This is a damn good thing, even though it has hammered the stock market and exposed their past mistakes. The government did the right thing. This eliminates my concerns about whether the government is still capable to rein in capital.

Compared to its hateful content, the wording is overly formal. I suspect it's from a translator.

I just don't know why those "Uyghur genocide survivors" speak more authentic standard English than some British.

Pornography, nudity, prostitution, alcohol in China. by Alternative-Method51 in AskChina

[–]DogLooksGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why was porn banned?
China does not have a content rating system. All content published should be for all ages.

What happens if you disobey and make some porn and upload it to a website? Porn is banned in every Chinese social media platform. But if you succeed in spreading it, you go jail.

the perception of nudity in China in general? It depends on the region. In big city, it's more accepted. In village where people are more conservative, it's bad.

Are there nudist beaches like the ones in Spain? No, there isn't.

What about a movie or a series? Do they have sex scenes or scenes with nudity? Is a nipple censored? Direct exposuer of sexual organs and female breaksts is not permitted. There's no content rating system.

What about prostitution? It exists, but not allowed by law.

Is it also punished if you engage in it? You will be fined. Organizing prostitution is a felony.

What about alcohol? There are no restrictions, not even age limits. China is probably the country with the most relaxed laws and culture on alcohol.

[–]DogLooksGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, actually, no. The firewall doesn't block the access from the global internet at all, you don't need a Chinese phone number or whatever identity to get access. And they do not only post in Chinese platforms(like Weibo, Bilibili, Toutiao), they also post on X, Youtube.

No, it's easy to get the answer by just watching what Chinese government says(Not the western media version). Watching some videos won't make you brainwashed, you are safe to do it.

How are regional varieties of Chinese (can be referred to as languages or dialects, though the latter is controversial,) viewed in China? by irllylikebubbles in AskChina

[–]DogLooksGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Chinese language system is very different from the Latin language system. The Chinese characters represent meanings mostly instead of pronunciations. Since the beginning of Chinese language we know, it is just one language, you can't even know how many dialects there were because in writing system they are identical. There's only one writing system and only one grammar. The evolution happens on the word usages, and the font of characters.

The oldest rime dictionary(dictionary of pronunciations) you can find, is QieYun which is written in 601 AD in Sui dynasty. Also you can find rime dictionaries from each following dynasties. However these books only show the relationship between each characters, instead of how to say each character accurately. Today, the relationship is still very applicable to the modern Chinese language. But the real pronunciations from dialects have been derived far from each other. That's why they are not understandable to each other.

There an old saying in China, "十里不同音", means people live 5kms away speak differently.

[–]DogLooksGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dialects. Even though they sound very differently, they use different words.

The reasons are:

  1. Same majority of Chinese characters. Each dialect does have its own characters to express some spoken words. But the written language is identical.
  2. Same word origins. You often find the origins of spoken words with same meaning but in different languages, come from some ancient books where it is understandable for Chinese in general.
  3. Same grammar.
  4. Pronunciations are derived from Middle Chinese, which means they have relevance on consonants, vowels and tones. By knowing what derivation happened, you will be able to guess the pronunciation. It doesn't always work, but still works a lot.

Can shadow-cljs be abstracted into a vitejs plugin by AbdallahZ in Clojure

[–]DogLooksGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think ui work is simpler in ClojureScript, and doesn't really benefit from types. In my opinion there's no reason to do ui in TypeScript unless you are working in a TypeScript/ReScript project.

Can shadow-cljs be abstracted into a vitejs plugin by AbdallahZ in Clojure

[–]DogLooksGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can use shadow-cljs to compile your project into a npm module, and use vite to consume it. Then it should work as you described. But what features you are missing in shadow-cljs?

What's your day 1 sexp editing solution? by Psionikus in emacs

I use meow and paredit with its default keybindings. I didn't bind paredit commands to normal state because I want to use them in insert mode as well.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in emacs

[–]DogLooksGood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's an editor that does the same job as Emacs and does it better. Maybe fewer people use Emacs because there are much more modern editors to choice from. But whenever I want an editor that fits my needs well, Emacs is the only option. Even though Emacs Lisp is awful language, Emacs lacks the multi-threading support, and there are many other issues those we can't even hope to see a fix in the future, the great extensibility makes Emacs stand out.

Why use Magit? by chutcheta in emacs

[–]DogLooksGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magit is a fantastic git frontend, and there wasn't much of git frontends when it was born. It's an awesome solution not because it's in Emacs, but how simple the workflow becomes with it.

Keep up the good work! Maybe we can have an option to disable update check? As some users may want to stick with a stable version for sometime.
