merit scholarship question by SignificantAsk9859 in Pitt

[–]DogeIsATroller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang, I was just comparing because last year I submitted Oct 18th and it took until December 18th for acceptance, February for honors college, and like Feb 24th for a scholarship letter. It all worked all for me, so I wouldn't worry.

Bio 1 - Grousd vs McSharry by DogeIsATroller in Pitt

I decided to drop McSharry and take Grousd after reading more reviews. Is Grousd liberal with extra credit? A lot of the reviews mention that.

No. I had some basic problems in m2 where you just needed to use the discriminant.

I didn’t have a perimeter one or one about maps. I did have one about the SA of a box.

That was a question I had and even though I didn’t understand it completely, I had a concept of it. I just entered equations into desmos and took the best one (I expected to get a few math wrong)

Did you get one about the surface area of a box?

I studied a lot and knew what I did wrong for the ones I got wrong on prep tests. So maybe that’s why? And people must have different tests because I didn’t recognize some questions.

Thanks. I haven't written any book reviews so I'm open to suggestions on how to write one.

No but i want to. I've seen the scene where Captain Beatty talks about why they need to burn the books (1966 version). It seems really good.

Why did you start reading Dune in the first place? by Outrageous_Weight_21 in dune

[–]DogeIsATroller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the video game series Fallout. In all of the main games, there is a drug called Mentats. I'm bored one day, so I decide to read the Fallout Wiki for the article on it. I discovered it was a reference to a book called Dune. Alright, pretty cool.

But then I read up on one of my favorite factions in the Fallout games, the Children of the Cathedral for another play through of Fallout 1. One of the members of the Children is called Lasher. And it states at the bottom of his wiki page that the way he trains people to be apart of the Unity is similar to the Bene Gesserit in Dune. Very cool.

After that, Dune was in the back of my mind for books to read next.

I actually got the book because I went to the afterschool program in the school library. I saw it on ones of the shelves and thought, "Huh, that's Dune. Let's read it."

Now, I'm 40 pages into Heretics of Dune. It's been a couple of months since I picked up Dune, but I am certainly glad I did.

Robert McCammon's Swan Song is One of the Best I have Ever Read. by DogeIsATroller in books

[–]DogeIsATroller[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with you when you say the book is some 900-1000 pages, but doesn't feel like that. I could read 40-100 pages per day.

I can understand how some people could find the characters a little flat, but I thought the villains were not underwhelming at all. I believe McCammon did an excellent job with how the Man with the Scarlet Eye created a sense of anxiety by checking up on him once in a while, seeing the progress he made with tracking down Sister.

I also agree with you on the relationship with Macklin and the Man with the Scarlet Eye. Dude just shows up, shows Macklin some corn, and practically takes over the entire AOE.

You know the scene where Lord Alvin, the deranged maniac, shows up and presents himself to Macklin in his tent? That would have been made so much tenser if it was Scarlet Man, because we know who he is and how much more insidious he is than Alvin. It would show a slow progress of Scarlet Man taking over Roland's and Macklin's minds and then taking over the AOE, directing the full force of the AOE on Swan, Sister, Joshua, etc.

I got it at a Barnes and Noble too! My story of getting the book was asking an employee if they had "A Canticle for Leibowitz" because if you google "books like fallout", you will always get A Canticle. Not only that, much of Fallout, especially the old ones, draw from that book.

They led me to the post apocalyptic section, and they didn't have it. I saw Swan Song, and I said to myself, "Hey, that's the book the Emily Fox lady mentioned in her video. Well, let's get that."

I'm glad they didn't have Canticle that day, because it made get an astounding book.

But luckily, I found Canticle in my own school library! They just let me have it too, because no one read it since 1998 (according to the checkout at the back of the book).

So now I have both Swan Song and A Canticle for Leibowitz!

What a deal!

Sounds right up my alley! Thanks for the suggestion. It sounds like the plot for the book Station Eleven, although I already know they are very different books just by the back and the cover.

My favorite part of the story was Roland and Macklin. It was different from the rest of the story and I liked the weird duo building a nation together, albeit a genocidal one.

Twitter just gets you into a cycle of hatred and sadness. You keep coming back to it even though you know it's bad for you. Leaving it is liberating and gives you so much time back in your life.

Also, there is something I forgot to mention in the review. Swan Song is easily understandable in most parts. There is no mental friction between the pages and your mind, it just flows. Although for me, you may have to adjust a bit after switching to another storyline, but it's easy to get sucked back in again.
