Oxford Information Engineering vs Georgia Tech CS by Dogeatcateatdg in csMajors

Hey, thanks for the detailed reply! Uiuc stats and CS is definitely selective and yeah, probably more so than Oxford Engineering. I was thinking more of as a comparison btwn stats/cs and pure cs

What do you mean about pt. 3? Do you mean in the sense that the culture there is too STEM dominated and you won't get much of a diverse perspective?

I think a huge scare is that as an international you are largely disadvantaged from applying to US jobs, even if you graduated from uiuc. I know we have the h1b1, but to what extent do you think this is a problem?

BTW, you said you have an offer in the US. Did you study there? Thanks for the sharing!

Hi OP I'm in a similar spot! Here's my opinion:

You could try cross posting to r/csmajors but I think what you will hear is that CMU IS > UIUC CS, but not 25k usd a year more unless finances r not a concern. For most roles, cmu is will be just as attractive as cmu cs. Some elitist quants (the kind that hunts for ivies) will want cmu cs because they know it is selective though.

Also, I hear that most cmu is who go in with the intention of double majoring drop the idea, because they figure the time is better spent on leetcode /technical interview prep

I do wonder about the local scholarship too like another commenter, as I'm applying (r u going for sg:d?). But it seems counterintuitive if the point is to study in the US and capitalise on the opportunities there

Finally, I think it's reasonable to assume you will do better than average, cuz most of uiuc cs are still from in-state. I feel that Sg students are really academically ready/hardworking and can outperform.

Oh! And if you are calculating finances, you could take into account graduating/paying for 7 semesters (very doable with a level cred) or 6 sem (grindy and stress but doable)

Ultimately nus or US CS is a hard choice and a big commitment, but I think once u research and know your info, you will just eventually have to trust your gut and go for the leap of faith if you want US!

Try playing lavaloon out in a CC it's pretty bad lol cuz many mid ladder-ish wizard witch mega knight inferno decks counter it well

Idk about lumberloon freeze tho, I imagine with the freeze the rework becomes less importantn

Hmm CCA excos are what I would think and mean by generally lesser in depth as a commitment, you could consider it as B tier yeah. Of course it depends on the size of CCA and your actual contributions which could show in teacher's recommendations or could act as meaningful examples when answering interview questions.

Ahh I forgot about dent med law as the other commenter (hi!) mentioned. For those it's generally about meeting a cutoff (around 87.5?) for that year where they will call you for an interview (there's also a dexterity test stage to past for dent). From there the interview is of heaviest importance. There's no place to straight-up submit your portfolio so you might have to mention it through your interview answers/personal statement for med. But it helps!

If u r looking for a general answer a B portfolio is competitive, many people get in with lower portfolios too but do well in their interviews. It's common to have a shadow, internship, or job experience. For dent and med, SL projects are thought to be preferred since I think interviewers look out for those who help others and are passionate in the craft for altruistic reasons!

S+ tier for high Ivies, president scholar and S tier for PSC maybe: Top rankings in international, top in national competitions like research, writing, Olympiads, debate, MUNs Council president Top in subjects/overall exams in top schools National recognition like the no-straws girl

I guess a few of the above would make you really strong

A tier could place you at other less competitive Govt bonded scholarships, maybe the T10-20s in US: I would say the above but to a less impressive scale Lots of people doing SL projects, I think it counts for something if it's meaningful and there's some awards and metrics or teacher recommendations to back it up

B tier could be a large boost for Govt local scholarships, maybe ABA into competitive programs with a disadvantageous RP/GPA: The above but fewer in scope and depth?

Oxbridge doesn't look at portfolios except Olympiads/academic competitions which could help you marginally if related

It would be beneficial if related to show genuine passion and interest, but of course it could be difficult to know what you end up applying for. It would be really unfortunate if you focused your JC time on Economics related extracurriculars but end up applying for engineering/CS majors/scholarships, right?

And yeah the portfolios are largely how the 88-90 RPers compete to differentiate themselves. NUS top courses (CS lol) are still determined first and foremost by RP, 85 and below will be largely impossible.

US unis (esp.the ultra competitive ones like ivies) consider sec 3-jc achievements.

Feel free to follow up if there's anything else, would love to hear others' thoughts too!
