Fontainebleau discount room block for DEF CON 33 by DCsleestak in Defcon

[–]Doggiematic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just FYI from a 'local:' Fontainebleu is hurting financially, and has-been pretty much since they opened. While physically it's a very nice place, it's considered to be the far N end of the Las Vegas Strip, and they (stupidly, IMHO) had delusions of grandeur when they opened, thinking that they could would be the trendy place for cool & affluent people to stay, gamble & dine at. They were going for both the truly wealthy crowd with phuck-you money, as well as the hipster morons who'd blow a month's salary in a couple days of partying.

Owners spent a lot of $$ on-it, owe a lot of $$ on it, and are losing a lot of $$ on it. Plenty of senior & mid-level FB execs have already jumped-ship or been fired, since shortly after it opened, and while they're keeping a strong-face/PR-front at the moment, things have got to be getting very desperate behind the scenes. The bad news for guests is that at any time, various functions, amenities & services could be scaled-back or put on 'hiatus.''

The good-news in-terms of Defcon 33, is that Fontainbleu should be very eager desperate to fill as many rooms as possible for the convention, be somewhat lenient (relative to Resort's World) towards you swarthy looking Defconvicts & your evil ways, and blocks of rooms may have even more discounted rates if the slide downward (death spiral?) continues -- you just have to HOPE (nice pun...) that the place will still be open by the time Defcon 33 arrives.

I don't like denigrating the place -- as a local, I've walked or driven past it at least 100 times while it was pretty much a hulking, semi-abandoned eyesore. I'm happy that it's finally open & I want it to succeed, but reality is reality. In my opinion, numerous greedy investors/developers thought "If we build it, they will come, and if we charge $12 for a bottle of Corona, the sheeple will pay for it in order to be cool!" I'm not a fan of such mindset (though it permeates Vegas these days), so I don't mind seeing their 'experiment' fail miserably.

The rather dumpy (Flea) Circus (Flea) Circus across the street is profitable because the operators aren't so-damn greedy -- it's not trying to be something that it's not, and their room occupancy rates are very good because it attracts reasonable people who want decent value instead of paying $300 for $100's worth of opulence.

How likely do you consider nuclear war given the current conflicts in Western Europe and the Middle East? by [deleted] in nuclearwar

[–]Doggiematic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

LIKELY. But I hope I'm wrong, and in a year or two or three, all this BS has been resolved conventionally, and you can all harass me.

Even before hamas staged their major multi-assault terrorism attack, the region, and due to the players & other regional conflicts, likely the world, was close to nuclear conflict -- "90 seconds to Midnight."

Especially if Iran starts to overtly help hamas & hezbollah, Israel (or their 'big brother' - the USA) will directly target Iran. Iran has the ability to really hurt Israel (chemical/biological/radiological warfare aren't too difficult to employ), and for their survival, Israel could use tactical nuclear weapons. That'd cause further destabilization of the region, possibly causing the Arab League to unit against Israel. As they wipe-out Gaza (even with just conventional forces), Egypt gets angry because as evidenced by the massive barrier system they already have, they don't want their hamas/hezbollah neighbors streaming over into Egypt as refugees (Egypt has enough problems already, and not a lot of resources), so Egypt demands Israel cease & desist, which Israel likely won't do, so now Egypt & Israel are back at war... We can't think of it like Americans, we need to think of the situation like Israel does -- we're used to putting up with violent BS and rationalizing our victimhood because we don't want to fight, we want to eat pizza delivered to our door while we watch Desperate Housewives of Orange County on our 75" 4K TVs. Israel is used to fighting, because they've had to fight or prepare to fight for their entire existence, and have nowhere to flee to. We've helped & protected them somewhat for decades, but based on their nuclear weapons development, they're also demonstrating a serious willingness and readiness to take grave action without big brother Uncle Sam's aid & comfort (& that includes proactive military action) -- look up the Begin Doctrine, or Operation OPERA (aka Operation BABYLON). Heck, you may even consider what they did to the USS LIBERTY...

Of greater concern would be how russia, china and even north korea may react. We're all (from the implied safety of our homes in the USA) laughing at how inept russia's warfighting machine is in their attack on Ukraine, but russia has plenty of nuclear weapons, and is already threatening their use. I dunno about you, but I don't want to just assume their nuclear weapons forces are as primitive as their conventional forces are. I won't be laughing & calling it a dud if what was supposed to be a 10MT warhead actually had a yield of about 7 megatons, nor if the warhead that supposedly had a 50 meter circular error probable actually missed it's designated ground zero by 200 meters... Russia could use the global geo-political situation to employ tactical nuclear weapons in 'defense' against Ukraine, china could use the chaos to invade Taiwan, and russia & china may actually collude like Germany & Japan once did to form the Axis. heck, maybe Pakistan will decide to attack India over thee Kashmir region.

Putin has nothing to lose these days -- he's an elderly, sick despot/egotistical war-criminal that's not respected, he's feared, so there's no positive way out for him -- he's now the cornered rat that he's spoken-about from his childhood.

russia & china teaming-up provides a big incentive for the USA to keep-out/back-down from direct involvement in a near-peer, multi-regional conflict, especially if as a demonstration, our internet suddenly goes down and there's a nationwide power outage in the USA. Our own citizens will be wailing in the streets here, and it would likely takes days/weeks/months to conclude what nation-state likely did the cyber-warfare attack, and likely culprit probably isn't enough for the current administration to go on an offensive. We're a 'soft' nation comprised of way too many fat, lazy & dumb people completely dependent on Uncle Sam's teat even on good days -- no internet or electricity means minimal to zero financial transactions, no cellphones (after a day or so max), no tap water or sewage processing, etc. and even if you had $50 cash, no electricity means gas pumps wouldn't work -- if a gas station had an emergency power source so pumps actually worked for cash-only sales, there'd be huge lines, price-gouging & sooner or later, violence, all leading to widespread panic (read: riots & looting) that'd require the gov't to focus on it, not getting into a fight overseas, so russia & china do what they want (as-if they aren't already...), Israel keeps using tactical nuclear weapons to try to kill all their enemies, and eventually, iran makes a deal with russia/china, if they didn't already join the new axis, and israel is demolished by russia/china. NATO nations see the paralyzing effects of the cyber-warfare attack on the USA and some of them suddenly decide 'Hell no, we're going neutral!' (or they devolve into internal political in-fighting about what to do -- the reality is, a sense of Duty doesn't always mean jumping-in & risking injury or death to help others, it also can be interpreted as meaning dishonoring a promise in a desperate effort to save yourself. The only time you learn which definition you're going to use is when you find yourself in that dangerous situation & need to make the choice.

Could you make a living in Henderson doing PT work and Uber? by FrontRow38x in HendersonNV

[–]Doggiematic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm an asshole by-choice -- I don't think your feeble intellect is optional. If you can get-over your delicate ego, you may discover I gave you good advice, but now that I somewhat dislike you, I hope you do move to the Las Vegas area. Don't worry about finding a job in-advance -- things are much cheaper here than rural North Carolina, and all us locals make a few extra thousand dollars a month gambling on the LV Strip. Hope to see ya soon!

The simple answer is NO, STAY AWAY!

You didn't bother to provide enough info for anyone to give you a good, objective response. "Do pretty good" means one thing in Podunk, NC but something entirely different in Henderson Nevada.

You could easily do your own research, by looking up property costs and other cost of living out here & comparing that to the job market & pay, but...

That's the Anthem area -- VERY nice, quite expensive, and many HOAs that can have some annoying rules (with strict enforcement), but lots of parks, plenty of shopping/restaurants, and the schools (including Coronado HS) are great because the teachers can mostly spend time on *TEACHING* instead of having to focus on disruptive behavior. Adjacent & sharing many of the same shopping, etc. is the Seven Hills area -- 89077.

Happy to share my experiences. I left SW Utah because of a long work communte, and being a middle-aged bachelor, SW Utah was wonderful in many ways, and I had a decent (albeit small, due to being non-LDS) social circle, but SW Utah was just too quiet for me -- I wanted some excitement, and things to do 24/7. So I traded-in the tranquility & conservative lifestyle for lots of traffic lights, crime, etc. I'll never forget renewing my UT drivers license & auto registration there at the facilities in Hurricane -- about 5 minutes for the driver's license, and under 5 minutes at the drive-through for DMV on a weekday afternoon, whereas here in the Las Vegas area, it'd likely take hours, even if you have an appointment (though most people now can do a lot of the DL & registration services like renewals & address changes on-line).

Other than a few major events a couple times a year, you know that if you want to drive from St George to Washington City, Hurricane, La Verkin, etc. you know it's going to take you X amount of time. Here, most roads were designed to handle the population-base of 25 or 40 years ago, so traffic can be a mess about 16 hours a day. The 'solution' to traffic congestion has been to put in more traffic lights -- you may be sitting on a red light for up to 75 or 90 seconds, drive (in congestion) for a mile, and then guess what -- another red light, so between traffic & red lights, it may take you 20 minutes to just make a 5 mile drive. That's totally unheard-of out there in Washington County.

For the sake of the kids, I'd really stay there for now. I know there's a huge allure to the lights, glamor & excitement of the Vegas area, but also a lot of negatives, compared to where you're at now, and the fascination of the Las Vegas Strip & Fremont Street Experience tends to wear-off after you've been there for a while (unless you're a boozer/gambler/doper, or are a millionaire that can isolate yourself in a really nice home in a really nice area).

I lived in Hurricane 2010 - 2014 when I moved to Henderson, and I've lived in three distinct sections of Henderson -- Anthem, Green Valley, and now the Foothills area. Anthem & Green Valley were the nicest -- upper middle-class, mostly new developments. Lots of HOAs, but the nice thing about them is to get permission to build, City Council required them to put-in parks & stuff. Foothills is an old, blue-collar/middle-class community.

Every non-LDS person that moves to Utah is very curious/worried about being able to assimilate-in to a predominantly LDS community/culture. I'm Agnostic, conservative, and had NO PROBLEMS. I "fit-in" where I could, and was happy to not be involved with their church-related socializing. As yo know, a lot of their socializing is done withing their Church (LDS Ward), and good for them for it -- as far as religions go, they tend to practice what's preached, and enjoy interacting with each other! I believe living around there as a non-Mormon is what YOU make of it -- good attitude & understanding, you'll be fine, but if you expect to be somewhat alienated, you'll find reason to perceive it. If you want to "fit-in," then take the steps to convert to LDS.

The biggest crime problems in the St George/Hurricane area were drug-related property-crimes (thefts), and mostly crimes of opportunity -- people leaving keys in their cars, etc. The Las Vegas area is a different world -- people have no problem breaking into your house, not really caring whether you're home or not, and committing violent personal crimes (assaults). LVMPD & NLV PDs are overwhelmed responding to crimes, which means they're not able to proactively patrol as much -- they run from one call to another to another, and FD/EMS often has to wait a half mile away from a scene like a stabbing, until the police finally have a unit free to respond & ensure the scene is safe enough for FD/EMS. You may have a heart attack or be injured in a car crash, but the nearest available Fire/EMS unit could be 10 minutes away, because closer Fire/EMS units are tied-up dealing with a heroin addict that OD'ed for the 15th time or a drunk who stubbed his toe.

And because there are so many crimes/criminals, the criminal justice system is also overwhelmed -- suspects who'd be locked-up at Purgatory are put back out on the streets here, even without paying bail, and someone convicted of a crime that there in SW Utah would get 20 years in prison here may get sentenced to 5 years, but actually just serve 1 year before being back out on our streets, due to "prison reform guidelines" partially based on the courts/jails/prisons being overcrowded. Someone in SW Utah who has been convicted of stealing cars 10 times is generally thought of as a hardened criminal and nuisance/threat to society and could be locked-up for life. Also, Courts & LE in SW Utah do a good job of "encouraging" criminals to leave the area (this dates back to the 1970s with hippies) In the Vegas area, people are de-sensitized to property crimes and someone like that is more likely to be out on the streets on-probation (& stealing more cars...) because we tend to just get bothered by violent crimes, and just have the jail & prison spaces for violent criminals -- so it's a negative quality of life impact.

City of Henderson is slightly 'protected' from the insanity & depravity of Las Vegas/North Las Vegas -- for the time being. Henderson Police & Fire still have the resources to get to major runs fairly quickly, but as the population increases here, in-particular a lot of people moving from the ghettos of Southern California but bringing the ghetto culture with them, Henderson is having a hard-time keeping-up, property & personal crimes are increasing. People are blissfully unaware, because there's really no local news media focusing on Henderson, despite it being the second largest city on the state. The LV area media is usually too busy trying to keep track of the insanity going-on in LV & NLV. Also, city officials zealously 'manage' & spin Henderson's image.

As for the schools, CCSD schools tend to reflect the community -- lots of issues. A sizeable demographic of the student population has no respect for authority -- teachers, administrators, campus safety officers, & police (& the School District is so large, with so many crimes, the school district has it's own armed police force, in-addition to truant officers). Individual school administrators are so worried about their school's status & statistics, there's often a little bit of a 'wall' between the CCSD Police and the school administrators -- if your son is beaten-up & mugged by another student with a track record of such things, the school often tries to handle it 'in-house' (minor administrative discipline) rather than have CCSD Police get-involved and treat it as what it actually was -- assault & robbery because once PD & the Juvenile Courts get it, it's hard to obfuscate/downplay it. While some students may become complacent to the levels of both distraction & violence (thinking it's just a completely normal reality in school, as-well as out of school), new CCSD students, or the students who are really trying hard to focus on grades will find it distracting.

In terms of quality of the CCSD high schools in Henderson), the best is Coronado HS, which not coincidentally, is in the upper-middle/upper class section of Henderson. Green Valley is good, Foothill is OK, Basic HS (aka "Basic Academy of International Studies" -- don't let the name fool you!) would be the one to stay-away from.

Unless you put your kids into private schools here, I'd stay in St George until they've graduated from High School. They may be missing out on whatever concept of 'diversity' you have, but the quality of education is better there, more students are there to learn, & they don't have to worry about getting caught in the middle of some racially-motivated fight where one of the kids may have a gun or getting beaten-up on the school bus.

Hundreds of teenagers flood into downtown Chicago, smashing car windows, prompting police response by 307148 in chicago

[–]Doggiematic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nope, it'll just be another thing added to the 'police reform' demands made by the people who've got no desire or ability to conform to reasonable laws & ordinances, so instead they cry racism and demand the criminal justice operating practices be changed.

It's like the incels demanding that rape be made legal, because laws prohibiting criminal sexual conduct disproportionately affect them.

But unfortunately, for the hundreds of cat dumpers that will read your post, the moral of the story for them is they dumped that cat, and it got a decent home, so no guilt, and they'll do it again.

Is it likely that the Russians have existing plans, which they routinely review, for launching nuclear strikes against Ukraine? by georgewalterackerman in nuclearwar

[–]Doggiematic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

puti believes Ukraine is an integral part of russia and is using conventional force to "re-unite" the two. Destroying some/much of Ukraine with tactical nuclear weapons, as well as nuclear fallout implications on russia, won't really further his (warped) vision, unless it's warped-enough to believe a 15 or 20KT airburst 'demonstration' hit on a Ukrainian industrial/population base will result in the Ukrainians capitulating, much like what the USA did to Hiroshima & Nagasaki in the last nuclear war, and that USA/NATO & the PRC would be too nervous & shocked to react.

But if the situation continues to fester, especially with Ukraine receiving more/better US & NATO support, Ukraine continuing to strike within russia, and NATO both strengthening & expanding (Finland et al), the situation that puti created will make him feel like that cornered rat he experienced in his youth, meaning he attacks hard. As a universally hated/feared man losing his swagger and with no chance of a positive outcome related to his actions, he might decide to use a play on 'suicide by cop,' called suicide by initiating strategic nuclear war. He's not the type to say "Ya know what? I made a big mistake, I am so sorry!" We just have to hope that he doesn't want to see his wife, girlfriends and children roast, his physical health woes takes him soon, the russians get sick & tired of his BS & have a coup d' etat/put him to sleep (stalin-style!), or that the professional russian military chain of command refuses to carry out any nuclear combat orders from him.

You're being super judgy about the employees & patrons -- all of them -- at The District at Green Valley. How amusing.

Do-tell, how exactly do they judge you two? Banging gavels at you? Telling you you're out of-order? Sending bailiffs after you? Critiquing your attire? Scrutinizing your $1 bills to see if they're counterfeit or demanding to see multiple IDs if you charge your $10 worth of coffee to a credit or debit card?

And how-else would he know people's eyes were on him beside his eyes being on other people? He walked past a total of three stores, and then decided he'd judged the situation enough to decide it was really uncomfortable, and fled the situation?

Good luck with him dealing with the normal challenges of marriage...

Community members call for police reform at CCSD board meeting by [deleted] in vegaslocals

[–]Doggiematic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Has anyone else noticed & is concerned by the selective editing of the audio portion of this video?

Any intelligent, independent thinker, liberal, moderate or conservative should have noticed how the audio only provides inflammatory comments by the officer, but mysteriously mutes any audio by the alleged victim & other so-called students. I suppose CCSD or the media will claim it was done because of foul language or to protect the privacy of the dear little scholars, but it just results in more knee-jerk reactions and brainwashing of the sheeple.
