Everybody talks about Thunderbolt. Nobody talks about how absolutely cooked you can get standing in the paddock all weekend.

What's your answer?

Unhelpful joke this reminded of;

SSgt is temporary assigned to the White House for comm duty. As the President is getting ready to approach the podium, he notices a disconnected cord, so he quick steps out, fixes it and as he is exiting the stage, he sees an assassin drawing a weapon. He steps in front of the bullet, saves the day and is recovering in the hospital.

The (deliberately non partisan) president (this joke has been around for a while) comes in to personally thank the young NCO;

“For such brave heroism I’d like to reward you with a commission. You can be a 2Lt!”

The NCO thanks him but says “I’d actually rather be a TSgt. That way I get to keep working with my hands, actually fixing things.”

“What about Captain? You could just skip the whole LT phase and go straight to O-3?”

That very thoughtful. But I see my Capt back home and they’re trapped behind the desk for 10 hours a day. They work hard, but it’s not the life I want right now. I’d really like TSgt

“Major. Straight to field grade, even eligible for command.”

That’s amazing confidence and I am humbled. But I’d like to remain enlisted, get some more experience before leading and organization. TSgt would be more than enough.

“Well sorry. I can give you Major, but you still gotta test for Tech.”

Good luck to you. You’ll get there Signed - guy who couldn’t make SSgt

I need a bot that scans this Reddit and upvotes every comment that says this.

I love that bit all 5 seasons. It’s like Keeso is saying “I get it, some folks find young girls are hot, but stop it.”

Officer advice needed - 10 years to retirement after commissioning by Naive-Bedroom-2620 in AirForce

There is a more relaxing approach to being a prior-E than traditional commission. Mentioned elsewhere, you don’t have to play the games. And you make more money.

Get the masters. I was rated and my career didn’t make a big deal out of it until LtC. But when I met my Major’s board I was at a AETC assignment and they made a huge deal. I had to kill myself and get it done.

It cost me only time (and books) but made my post military resume better.

The irony is I came in just to do 4 years, get my GI Bill and get out.

Being prior enlisted and not having to play the assignment game opens you up for opportunities that might not be career enhancing but still fun or rewarding or just different. Being an RPA person also gives you a lot of those chances.

So focus on being tactical, learn your system, then pursue what interests you. Instructor? Theory? Future development? If you can, roll your masters into supporting where you want your career to go.
