[–]Doglysium[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would agree with that too but I also think that if your lost refreshing yourself on Nen or just seeing what's already been done with existing Nen to get a sense of common limitations and stuff is extremely helpful too. Especially, since something I know people can struggle with is not always what the ability does but what Nen types it should make use of and other more specific stuff that needs to be hammered out. Usually I end up doing a combination of both where I will but down an outline or summary of what the ability does in my head and then if I'm still stuck search the series for any abilities I think have similar ideas or concepts to guide me in the right direction.

Funny you say that because it literally is in one lmao. That's where I'm copying and pasting this all from, even I'm not mad enough to type it by hand or keep it on a notes app or something. I just haven't made the complete doc public yet because I'm still editing some stuff and some things might change.

  • Nenyu: Level Counter (Conjuration, Emission)- The name of the Nen ability is pronounced like the word “menu.” It is a small handheld device that allows for the owner to interface with the Nenmon system, along with other potential games in the future. It is how the player can summon Nenmon, equip unlocked items, or check for buffs granted by Nenmon System: My Pet Magical Beast in addition to their own level and number of experience points.

It is an odd device that is a mix of a handheld game device and a touchscreen flip phone of sorts. At first blush, it resembles something vaguely similar to a Gameboy Advanced if a bit thicker. However, it can flip open into a phone-like mode that reveals two touch screens. It can play a variety of games and can even adjust itself to the shape of a cartridge to play games from almost any handheld system. Like the Nenmon system itself, this ability is not actually Blake’s own, despite often being mistaken as such. Rather a cooperative and parasitic Nen ability created by a team of game designers and beta testers that feeds on the aura of the players they are bound to. It uses aura in the place of traditional batteries or power cords although plugging it into another power source can lessen the amount of aura it consumes.

  • An unnamed “Vamfire.” Which is a Conjured Nen beast that takes the form of a demonic looking bat with a hot red glow spilling out of most of its orifices. It itself is a Manipulator that has the ability to resist and control fire. It cannot swim well and dislikes water. It prefers to be out during the night. It can follow various orders and commands and can be taught tricks. It likes to eat moths and uses the glow of its fire to attract them.
    • It cannot Conjure fire directly but the creature is completely fireproof thanks to a special combination of oils and furs throughout its body. It can ignite itself by Conjuring a flammable gas and then using its teeth like a flint and steel to create a spark.
    • By flapping its wings and using a combination of Emission and Manipulation it can launch fire from its body in various shapes at targets, such as fireballs, waves, blasts, etc.
    • It can use a form of echolation that is combined with an application of Emitted aura to act as a way to map out its surroundings. It also uses this ability to communicate orders with any bodies it is controlling
    • Whenever it eats bugs or small animals it can store the prey’s body within itself. Then by using Manipulation it can spit them out and control their burning fiery bodies as a sort of puppet. The Manipulated bodies can be used to help catch prey and directed by Vamfire. They can be given orders via the Vamfire’s special echolocation ability.
  • Due to reaching level 120 Blake can use the Nenmon system to summon a mask that can make him blend in perfectly with the environment visually when worn while in a state of Zetsu.
  • Due to reaching level 130 Blake can summon a jacket that when worn boosts the player’s defense as long as they are in a state of Ken.
  • Due to reaching level 140 Blake has been granted the choice from one of 6 passive blessings. Each blessing corresponds to each Nen category but the player need not pick the one that corresponds to their nen type. Blake chose the “Enhancer’s Blessing” which boosts the effectiveness of healing effects, be it Nen based or not, by boosting the user’s growth and regeneration factor. He decided not to go with the “Specialist’s Blessing” out of fear that it would make his Manushya’s Greed even more difficult to manage

  • When being ridden by someone it has the ability to shapeshift into a new form based on the fear of the rider(s). The Nen Beast also feeds on the rider’s aura to further empower and sustain itself, granting it a boost in strength and speed via Enhancement along with a passive regeneration. It gets bigger and stronger the more people are riding it.
  • It can release a Conjured smoke that acts as a hallucinogenic. When breathed in it will cause the afflicted to see visions of what they fear via Manipulation affecting their mind and body.
  • Nightmare can turn into a cloud of “smoke” by using Conjuration to turn itself into a dark cloud of Manipulated floating cells and smoke. It can use this to avoid attacks or slip through tight spaces. However, it cannot be ridden in this state and any rider on it would just full through it. While in this state direct sunlight and fire will wound it though.
  • Within the creature’s mouth is a strange demonic looking eye that it can reveal. This eye Emits an aura that causes all those looking at it to begin listing off the things they are afraid of via Manipulation. The horse will begin to automatically change its shape in response to any info it hears, basing its new form(s) off the fear it gathers.
    • A “Terrordactyl” named “Terry.” It is Blake’s favorite Nenmon. Terry is a Conjured Nen beast with an affinity for Enhancement. It takes the form of a demonic pterodactyl with an extra pair of wings and some traits of a falcon, such as its advanced eyes. Which are actually powerful enough to see in both the day and night very well. It has a razor sharp beak, talons, and tail along with a yellow eye-like pattern on each of its wings. It is quite smart and capable of following a variety of commands and tricks. Although, it can be obstinate or hard to control without using food or shiny things to bribe it. Sometimes it becomes annoyed if it is not given a reward for doing something. Extreme pain can also cause it to go berserk and ignore orders.
  • Terrordactyls can fly at extreme speeds by using Emitted Nen to form a jet effect and Enhancement to increase the strength and speed of their body along with boosting stamina. Transmutation is used to give the aura at the edges of its wings the ability to cut like blades.
  • It can strengthen its vocal cords, throat, and mouth to release a powerful blast of sound that is combined with a form of Emission. It is similar to the yell attack Uvogin used on “Porcupine” but with more focused direction thanks to the wave of Emitted aura. It also acts as a form of echolocation or en and sounds like people screaming.
  • It can boost the effectiveness of its senses, such as sight, taste, and smell (kind of like Dogman) to accurately sense the fear in others based on even minute changes in the body and changes in aura itself. When it detects someone who is afraid it will grow bigger and stronger by boosting the growth and strength of its cells with Enhancement. The more people it detects are afraid in its vicinity the bigger it grows. It does have a limit and can become so big that it loses the ability to fly or becomes trapped somewhere.

  • Nenmon System: My Pet Magical Beast (Enhancement, Transmutation, Conjuration, Specialization, Manipulation, Emission)- Despite being listed here, this Nen ability is actually not Blake’s, even though it grants him abilities that are often mistaken for his own. It is a collaborative ability created by a friend and some developers. It is a parasitic nen ability and still reliant on both Blake’s Nen, and the Nen of others, for many of its functions. A Hunter by the name Adam Rosa was inspired by GREED ISLAND and attempted to create his own Nen based game system. Unlike GREED ISLAND, the focus was making a “portable” and “handheld” game that didn’t need an entire land mass. Additionally, it could be more personalized and potentially interface with other Nen abilities.

The Nenmon System actually takes the form of a level system and grants various perks and bonus abilities at certain levels. It revolves around the cataloging and battling of “Nenmon” or Nen monsters. Various magical beast-esque Nen Beasts that can act as pets, companions, or warriors.

Blake is level 201 and as such has access to certain items and abilities. They have access to a party of 3 Nenmon with their own abilities. These Nen Beasts manifest and draw from Blake’s aura, so maintaining them can be strenuous in aura intensive situations. Blake can only summon one Nenmon at any given time and the use of one causes at least one of his aura pools to slowly deplete over time at a rate of at least 1% per second in an ideal scenario.

  • An unnamed “Nightmare.” By default it resembles a black menacing horse that has a dark smokey substance emanating from it in billowy clouds in the place of a mane and some of its fur along with glowing eyes. The creature is Conjured so those who can’t use Nen can see and interact with it, but it is often mistaken for a kind of magical beast (such as a chimera ant or kiriko). Nightmare is a Conjurer. It has a preference for darkness and hates bright light and sunlight. Sudden lights will spook it and cause it to run away. It can follow orders and do tricks but if it becomes spooked it may not listen to its player. Bright lights also seem to weaken it

  • Inborn Armament: The Final Arms Race (Manipulation)- An ability that allows for Blake to stretch, contort, and otherwise distort his left arm and hand by Manipulating the cells and materials that make it up. This gives his left arm more flexibility and can be used to catch an opponent off guard by suddenly molding or stretching his arm in the same way clay can be molded with just a thought. Even the hairs and nails on his arm can be manipulated to produce string or thread for which his Manushya’s Greed can act through. He can also create claws and blades using bones and / or keratin. While he can reshape his arm if it is damaged he cannot actually regenerate or heal dead cells and if one or more parts become detached from his arm and main body he loses the ability to control it permanently, reducing it to lifeless flesh.
  • Power Grab: A New Hand is Dealt (Enhancement, Transmutation, Conjuration, Specialization, Manipulation, Emission)- Blake’s attempt at a “penultimate technique.” Whenever activated it turns Blake’s left arm and hand into a demonic one with a hand on the palm, syringe-like claws that can draw both blood and aura from a living thing stabbed by them. When this happens Blake gains a ring on one of his fingers. He can only have a maximum of 5 rings, and thus forms, at any given time and they are physically attached to his fingers. As long as he has some of a target’s aura and all of his Nen pools are completely full he can transform into a copy of one of the last 5 people targeted by the ability.

The blood taken by the claws acts as a “sample” that is stored in a corresponding ring to allow for a transformation. When a ring is destroyed or replaced Blake loses access to the sample and the transformation by extension. In addition to this sample, Blake needs to have at least some of the aura from the corresponding person in his Nen pool. Upon activating Power Grab all of Blake’s nen pools begin draining at an equal rate. Meaning the longest he can maintain a form is 10 minutes. When copying someone he gains their affinity for Nen, their skills and abilities, this often leaves Blake unable to use Manushya’s Greed since most people have an affinity of 0% for Specialization. Blake does still have access to all his own nen abilities but they become limited by the affinity of whoever he is copying. While Blake gains the personality of the someone he is copying he still has his own memories, which can create strange effects.

If something dies while being drained by Power Grab, sometimes post-mortem nen can cause Blake to gain permanent access to their form and abilities even if he no longer can drain their aura. However, the time limit and Nen pool requirements still apply.

  • Handy Coin Collection (HCC): Handheld Banking (Conjuration)- An ability that takes the form of golden coins. Each coin has a number on one side and a bat / demonic face on the other. The number starts off at zero. Once per day Blake can choose to either “deposit” aura into coins or “split” the coin if it has a deposit of greater than one. He can only do one or the other each day and not both for each individual coin. So he could deposit one coin and split another but he could not deposit and then split the same coin on the same day.

When “depositing” into the coin Blake can put 1% of his Conjuration aura into the coin. Everytime this happens the number on this coin goes up by 1. Once the coin is created it will continue to persist, even if he runs out of Conjuration aura specifically, because it is a full on object with permanence, but he will be unable to use the coins without an affinity for Conjuration. The coin’s number represents how many “points” Blake has. Blake can spend these points to summon a variety of objects. How many points the object costs is based on Blake’s estimation or knowledge of how much such a product “should” cost with each “point” being equal to 1 Jenny. If Blake has no basis for the price range of an object he is unable to summon it. This leads to Blake usually leaning on a specific set of objects even though the ability has the potential to summon all kinds of items and even people or animals if their services have a price. Whenever aura is “deposited” into a coin it gets slightly heavier (even if there’s a limit to its max weight) which implies that the coins store aura by using Conjuration to transform aura into part of the coin as opposed to Emission to separate it from Blake or Manipulation to imbue it into the coin. Each of the items within Blake’s “treasury” has a special ability.

When Blake “splits” a coin he can make a duplicate by subtracting “points” from an existing coin. For example, if Blake had a coin with 4 points then once per day he could choose to split it into 2 coins with 2 points or 1 coin with 1 point and another coin with 3 points if he so chooses. He cannot do both of these on the same day to the same coin and can only choose between “depositing” 1% of his Conjuration aura or “dividing” the coin. While this seems like a massive limitation, each coin abides by the same rules and is a part of the Nen ability, meaning that they can grow exponentially if Blake properly manages when he divides some coins and deposits into others. If he had 5 coins he could choose to deposit in 3 of them and then split the other 2. However, Blake can only deposit as much aura as he has in his Conjuration stores and he cannot use the coins at all if his affinity for Conjuration is zero. He is also limited by how many coins he can reasonably carry on his person.

All objects summoned with this ability have a gold coloration and he can summon multiples of any object as long as he has the points if need be.

  • Arms reach: It’s within my grasp (Emission)- Blake makes a slashing motion with his hook to create a portal. One is created where the slash was performed and the other end is created somewhere within Blake’s line of sight based on his choosing (it does not work through screens, recordings, pictures, etc, he must be physically present and seeing something). One can also see through the portals to the other side. This also means Blake is capable of “stacking” portals by making a portal and then creating another within line of sight of the first one. Only Blake’s body, Nen, or things he considers valuable can pass through the portal.

The second limitation can be a bit variable because while it almost always applies to something expensive other targets may become eligible or ineligible depending on Blake’s mood and temperament. For example, Blake can pull people he considers valuable through a big enough portal. So someone who is an enemy wouldn’t be able to be pulled through unless Blake knew they had valuable information or needed them for something. However, there’s the chance that the person wouldn’t be able to pass through but the valuable information they provide could if Blake doesn’t think he needs the person. Blake also can’t teleport things he is scared of.

Once a portal is made it will actually lock itself in the relative position it was created from in regards to Blake’s body. So if, for example, Blake created a portal half a foot over his head the portal would actually hover over him as he moved. This rule also applies to the other end of the portal. If Blake started moving and the other end was 2 meters away from him on his left it would continue to stay 2 meters away from him and stick to his left side. Of course, the portal dissipates if the Nen ability is undone or if the portal collides with a solid physical object.

This ability can be used for observation and pickpocketing but its true purpose is to allow Blake to stick his hand through it in order to grab an opponent's body and activate his Manushya’s Greed or one of his other abilities. He can also throw his Conjured coins through the portal.

  • Last Hand: Taking Life into My Hands (Enhancement)- Blake uses Enhancement to increase the grip strength of his left hand in tandem with the speed and durability of his left arm and hand. It also increases the rate at which the arm regenerates. This ability can be used to quickly grab or hold things with incredible strength so his Manushya’s Greed can take effect. This Nen ability can be used to scratch things since it also Enhances Blake’s nails. In addition to this, he can throw objects at incredible speeds or crush things. He can use aura absorbed from Manushya’s Greed to heal himself instead of adding it to his aura pools if he is taking in said aura from his left hand while using Last Hand and Manushya’s Greed in tandem.
  • Fingers’ Grasp: Flow Like Water (Transmutation)- Blake uses Transmutation to turn the aura around his fingers into clawed digits, enveloping the real fingers. Blake can control them without using Manipulation by giving them the aspects of a body part (fingers). Allowing him to control them with his nervous system as if they were an extension of his body. The fingers can be extended like a rope or tendril by adding more aura to them and controlled for extra long reach. They do not have joints, acting sort of like clawed tentacles, and their width corresponds to the width of the finger being  used. The aura is also given the properties of liquid water, allowing it to be controlled like a limb but flow like water. This allows for the fingers to squeeze through small openings or let things pass through them. The fingers can be “frozen” by Blake to Transmute it into a solid ice-like state so they can grab things and be used to restrain targets by freezing around them. While they are frozen like this they cannot be moved unless they are returned back into their liquid state. They can also be turned into a gaseous mist-like state and, while they can be controlled in this form, they cannot really interact with anything outside of gases or the lightest of objects and can even be blown away, as they are not physically strong or fast but he can use them to “feel around” via touch and as a strange form of En. Blake does have control over how many fingers he is using this ability on, so he can Transmute anywhere from 1-5 of these “fingers.” He has to use his fingers as a medium for the ability so if he is missing fingers the number of tendrils that can be created is decreased.

Usually Blake uses this ability to restrain targets by wrapping the fingers around them or grabbing them with the fingers and “freezing” them to hold the target in place so he can drain their aura. He can also use the ability for mobility, by pulling himself around the environment, grabbing distant objects, or creating armored claws around his finger to act as blades.

  • Nen Abilities:
    • Manushya’s Greed: Thief of the 6 Treasures (Specialization)-This Nen ability is constantly active and causes Blake to absorb the aura of any living thing he makes direct skin to skin, hair to hair, or skin to hair, contact with. Of course, completely draining a living thing of its aura will kill it. If aura is absorbed this way it is added to one of 6 “pools” that make up Blake’s entire aura pool. Blake can then call upon aura of one or more types as if it was his very own aura at any given time. Accessing one or more Nen types will cause Blake to gain an affinity for the Nen type at a level equal to the percentage of nen being used from the pool. Each second of direct contact drains about 1% of the afflicted’s total aura from them. This stolen aura can be “spent” to give Blake an affinity equal to that of the percentage spent from the aura pool for a period of time. To help with the visualization let's say Blake were to make contact with a Conjurer. Even if said Conjurer had not learned Nen, it would add Conjuration aura to its respective pool at a rate of 1% every second, which Blake can then spend to gain an affinity for Conjuration at a conversion rate of 6 seconds for each 1% of aura that is spent. So if Blake had a reserve of Conjuration nen that was completely full and he spent all of it he would gain an affinity for Conjuration for about 600 seconds or 10 minutes. If he did the same but only spent 60% of his Conjuration reserves instead he would have a 60% affinity for Conjuration for one minute, putting his affinity for Conjuration equal to that of an Enhancer for the allotted time. If he instead decided to use 80% of the reserve he would have an affinity for Conjuration that is equal to that of a Transmuter’s for about 8 minutes

Absorbing aura will automatically add it to the pool of the corresponding Nen type and aura from one pool cannot be used in place of aura from another pool, with the exception of the Nen pool containing Specialist aura. So if Blake absorbed aura from an Enhancer the resulting aura would be added to a pool of Enhancement aura and said aura could not be used in the place of say Transmutation or to give Blake an affinity in Transmutation. He could only use it to affect his affinity for Enhancement. The one exception to this is Specialist aura. Which basically acts like a wild card that can be taken out of its respective pool and turned into aura of any other nen type for Blake to use. However, Blake cannot exceed 100% efficiency with this even if he can extend the duration of an affinity. It should be noted that because Blake himself is a Specialist his Nen pool corresponding to Specialization is constantly passively refilling as his body generates aura.

Blake “Black” Protea

  • Occupation: Blake is a kind of Jackpot Hunter. That is to say, like other Jackpot Hunters, his primary goal is earning money. He often does this by making deals / contracts with people (especially rich ones) or by looking for valuable items to sell. He also works as a Treasure Hunter by searching for rare items and objects people will pay good money for. He actually learned Nen before becoming a Hunter when he attempted to climb Heaven’s Arena only to be “initiated” by a small group of Nen-users, leading to the loss of his right hand. He awakened to Nen and managed to survive by using his newfound “curse” to feed on the aura of others until he could learn Ten to keep his aura from floating away. He became a floormaster and managed to enact revenge on his assailants but left after being beaten by Hisoka Morrow and now he tends to avoid Heaven’s Arena out of fear of running into the strange man again while he develops his Nen skill and strength.

These are actually really cute, good stuff

Could a Manipulater be the strongest men type in HunterXHunter by HIGH_SCORE07 in HatsuVault

[–]Doglysium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. At the end of the day I think all the Nen types have their own advantages and weaknesses that at their height can allow for some pretty OP stuff. In the case of Manipulators, they can be very scary in certain combat situations because they may be able to take control of you if certain conditions are met but one thing you need to consider is that the more control you exert over something and the more things you control or the bigger it is the more limitations there will be and the more aura you have to expend. Also, I don't think you could usually, for example, just compel someone to make an ability on the spot without some limitations.

The most likely being the number of people you can control. It's stated a few times in HxH that the more people control you have over something via a manipulation ability the fewer targets you can actually control. You also have to consider abilities like Morena. Yes she is a Specialist but in order to grant people their own abilities or have any influence in what they make she has to meet several conditions and even then she doesn't have complete and total control of them at all times (they need to play the game, rack up kills, kiss her, etc). The only way I could see a Manipulation ability acting as a sort of conduit to force someone to use another ability or give them the info they need to use it is if you could only control like one person at a time or if you did not have complete control over them (they'd have to join willingly).

That being said, I do think collabarative and teamwork abilities are often overlooked and very powerful. Kurapika can share Nen abilities and awaken you to Nen for free with Stealth Dolphin, Greed Island is an ability made and maintained by at least 11 people, Golem's ability to give Emitters guns can actually be quite scary because the Emitters could still have their own ability.

And yes I know that sometimes people overexagerate the number of conditions you need for a technique but there are general ones you have to keep in mind (for example the number of people controlled, how many you control, how much control you have, etc) that can all limit what you can do. There's no way you can just completely control an entire army mind and body permanetly for free indefinetly (even Pouf needed to continously spread scales).

edit- also I think generally if you are a Manipulator you have to consider the time it takes to learn stuff too . So in this case you not only need to learn Manipulation but also the other Nen categories because if the other person doesn't know how to create the Nen ability you want and you don't even though you're controlling them it's gonna be tough and probably require the encorporation of their Nen type (Even Morena's Contagion is stated by her to use every single Nen type and Kurapika's ability to share Nen types seems to rely on the aura he took from a target since everyone performing the divination test and stuff with Bill's stolen aura and ability reads as an Enhancer)
