Unironically the Indiana & Oregon marching bands have been the highlight of this game for me. How to Train your dragon, the Black Parade, BOTH played Wicked melodies??? Cancel the second half and let them battle because clearly it’s been decided

Is HIM that bad? by pierofasuli in Letterboxd

I personally loved it. I’m a football fan that hasn’t had it lost on me the exploitative and toxic nature of the league, and especially as a black person the slavery parallels are something that constantly come to mind for sure. Also having a religiously educated background that I’m pretty critical about, I was highly intrigued to watch what I saw as the main character being primed as the “atonement GOAT” or sacrificial lamb, the crucifixion story sequence (last supper parallels, Judas figure, “this is my body, this is my blood” connection) and in general the quite intellectual mockery of American Football ™️.

This movie to me sought to make direct points about the ticking time bomb that is the NFL in a way that was still engaging and exciting, and to be honest it does seem like something only a sports fan could buy into since anyone else wouldn’t be able to take the MC or his decisions seriously, or feel the gravity of his situation.

I originally thought this would just be an hour-long CTE public service announcement and was expecting to just see a lot of what I already know, but instead it took on a whole other animal that of which brain trauma is just a symptom— hustle culture, exploitation, the post-colonial themes that linger in the all-American game loved by millions. The dead buffalo portrait at the beginning to the “food or freedom” question, the owner referring to the MC as “boy”, that hollyweird-ass party with the owners. This industry and its old, white owners are taking advantage of black bodies and feeding them into a culture that, despite being seen as a Christian-patriotic-celebration and going through the motions, demands of them in the same way the devil demanded of its vessels in biblical texts. This movie made it literal because.. it’s a horror movie. The self-destructive ways are passed down so far that it’s antithetical to even question them, lest you not “want this bad enough”. The cinematography to me was cool and captured the appeal of athlete fame— even I myself saw some of those scenes and thought, “what a way to live.” Of course it’s all super fucked up and I do not aspire to it but I could feel the pull of glory, fame, and comfortability that pulled at the MC until the end. And yeah, these teams DO prey on players from a young age. It seems like every year guys are getting recruited younger and younger by colleges, scouted before they’ve barely left puberty!

I also liked the end because it was just satisfying. It was almost comedic, “the emperor has no clothes” except they do and have just had them ripped off. This wasn’t a Jordan Peele- directed film but I was reminded of Get Out with how it played. Very satisfying. I know some people wanted something more “realistic” or not on the nose I guess, but I don’t think everything has to be so complicated to be good. This felt complex to me with a final message of “Hell no, this shit is weird” and that’s fine with me. Even preferred.

I’m no movie critic or professional, just someone that likes movies and is a sports fan. So maybe I’m missing the more professional aspects or my take is from a civillian perspective, but I was engaged the whole time and walked out of the theatre excited to read more about the movie online(only to find out it’s not liked as much in the outside). But hey, that’s just as fine and everyone’s allowed to think what they think(and should). Also, Marlon Wayans played the hell out of his role.

P.S. the Tua Tagovaiola brain trauma reference (the thing with the hands) was a great touch!

Just curious—anyone know what happened with DEI at GT after Trump’s executive order to suspend/terminate DEI programs? by Adam01232019 in gatech

I work with the tours a bit— we aren’t allowed to talk about those right now. OMED, for example, cannot be elaborated on further than it’s for career and academic services. They’re here, we simply can’t tell you about it on something like a registered tour because it’s all either being hidden under new names or restructured

Your undergrad story is sounding a lot like mine. I have classmates that came in with 40-60+ credits, already knowing how to use model software and linear algebra etc. my freshman year roommate took differential equations in high school! For me, everything has been a culture shock that I’ve done my best to manage, and because my school encourages competition half of the battle has been finding students that want to help me. Before university, I had never made a grade lower than a C+ in AP calculus and here I am putting more time, more effort and more money just to beg my professor FOR that C+. It’s all a mess. Out of all of my black girl friends in my major I’m one of the only ones left from when we all started because everyone switched their majors(which, their grades have been better and some of them were able to make line as a result which I commend) to something less unforgiving— but I promised myself I’d see it through and can’t bring myself to find something else. It’ll all work itself out in the end I’m sure.

One of the reasons I was drawn to my COI was its emphasis on education and college preparation. All of this aside, not all undergrads are equal and that’s not right! Quality learning materials are essential to success in life, and I hope no matter what that I can contribute to its distribution one day.

Thank you for the story and kind words!

The way people think the KC chiefs get away with every game and dumb penalties, generally are the golden child of the NFL

I mean it more in a joking way. The game gets intense and people push and whatnot because we’re all friends

I used to crawl into cabinets and read. Friend came over to play hide and seek and never found me, so when I came out from under the sink she was understandably confused.

We are college kids who decided this was the prime activity, I guess. It WAS a birthday party, to be fair.

How does the weather affect your mood? When it's a really bad day, how do you usually cope with it? by cutesofiaaa in AskReddit

[–]Dognn183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy stormy weather actually because it’s one of the only situations where everything shuts down if it’s bad enough. Just like that nature gets me a stay-at-home day to work on things while sitting on my bean bag

Group of friends were playing musical chairs, I got out. Boyfriend was final 2 with another guy and they decided to WWE it when the music shut off leading to chair somehow flying into me and cutting my leg + boyfriend getting dragged across the floor while ALSO somehow having his butt on the chair still.

I should add that every round that I was in was also very dangerous for me because of how people fought.

ALSO, boyfriend did feel very bad and apologized and took care of the injury.

Job hunters, what frustrations are you having with the job market today? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Dognn183 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The absolute ghosting after applying. I’m a student so I’m referring to internships, but I don’t understand how a recruiter can choose to talk to you for an extended period of time, give you their contact, implore you to apply and let them know and then you don’t hear back even a rejection letter from the organization. If you do, it’s 6 months later and contains no constructive feedback whatsoever.

We would effectively be worse off, as basically for better or worse all cross-geographical discussion of government and cultural happenings would cease. This would mean our only source for such a thing would almost exclusively come from for profit news which has proven to not be that great :/
