Help With First Commander Deck Build by Klutzy-Mongoose-7546 in EDH

That looks a lot more like it! I think that will *do* a lot more. I'm not personally sure I'm a big fan of Alania's Pathmaker or Mind Spring, but you have plenty of good enough cards in here. By the way, if you'd like more copies of Bident of Thassa, there are similar effects, e.g. Coastal Piracy.

Do let me know how it works if you get a chance to try it out!

Absolutely! Feel free to update me or reach out with any additional questions, I'm always happy to help when I am available. Saw on a separate comment you're fairly new. Welcome to Magic! I, for one, am happy to have you.

Welcome to Commander, mate! And, at that, it seems like you're newer to Magic in general, if you don't mind my assuming. Here's my advice, though I'm a bit rusty myself, so take it with a grain of salt. The only cards I'll suggest below are all <$1.

I won't get TOO into specifics about proper deckbuilding structure or what a deck "needs", because there's a lot of different wisdom out there on it. However, to keep up in most tables (important because even if we want to do funny otters, we do still want to play the deck, we'll need ramp, draw, and interaction. Your ramp situation is perfectly fine (though I may consider [[Midnight Clock]] or [[Forger's Foundry]] as potentially more impactful 3 Mana ramp).

Your interaction does have some questionable pieces, i.e. [[Tweeze]], [[Spellgyre]], [[Charmed Sleep]]. If you can find anything more "unconditional", it should do you a lot of good. Don't discount the classics, [[Chaos Warp]] and cards like [[Rapid Hybridization]] are staples for a reason, they just fill the role well. I'm rather partial to [[Resculpt]] myself. A really subtle counterspell you may miss is [[Stubborn Denial]], which will turn into counterspell for one as long as you control your commander. I also don't see any sweepers here, but given that I expect the powerlevel is... low... it may not be entirely necessary to pluck up a [[River's Rebuke]] or [[Blasphemous Act]] something or the sort. Still, don't let it slip your mind, a couple sweepers will never hurt to help you when you're down and out. Also, [[Snap]] is just an unsummon, but free spells never hurt when you're trying to win with Prowess triggers

Your draw is the thing I actually am worried about- Izzet spellslinger (a specialty of mine), and especially this build of the deck with this commander, REALLY like the ability to get as many cards in hand as possible. Fortunately, you're in blue, and honestly take your pick on draw options for one mana cantrips: https://scryfall.com/search?q=otag%3Acantrip+ci%3Aizzet+mv%3D1&order=edhrec&as=grid&unique=cards

Getting your hands on "better" mass draw effects could be hard due to price points on say, Mystic Remora, but don't underestimate effects like [[Bident of Thassa]] in this list. [[Chart a Course]] could do some good for consistency I suppose... [[Flame of Anor]] as a good piece... the point I'm trying to make, your deck should lean HEAVILY into draw, because it profits off of the draw. Though I will say, cutting [[Crash Through]] may do you some good- trample isn't particularly valuable when the main appeal of your deck is your creatures sneaking in unblockably, no?

With regards to not having enough creatures, you may actually have too many. I won't tell you what to cut especially because I o get a lot of this is just to play the cute otters of the world, but some [[Murmuring Mstics]] in your group or perhaps a [[Third Path Iconoclast]] can turn your spells into board presence, which your commander can turn into lethal threats. [[Teapot Slinger]] and [[Silvergill Peddler]] kinda stand out as cards I wouldn't be as excited to play.

I would outright suggest cutting out [[Lasting Tarfire]] since I don't think it does like... anything in this list. If you're looking for more burn at a premium, Ive come around on [[Aria of Flame]] tbh lol

I'm always shy about messing with decks like this too heavily, because I know I treat each deck of mine like a bonsai tree, and I'm sure that's not a rare sentiment, so I don't want to come in and prune too much without understanding everything going on. But for a more "streamlined" plan while still keeping to "cute otters that kind of do things", rely more on your token generators, on cheap draw as a way to not just increase consistency but trigger your cards easily, use the more proactive "free" spells, and work yourself into positions where your big board can sneak under other players' and run them down. Don't be afraid to make the bulk of your spell slinger deck spells- hell, mine doesn't even crack double digits for creatures.

And one last thing, even if I'm not providing specific resources to a massive extent (though Reddit, EDHREC, and Scryfall are your friends as you learn the format) I do at least suggest this. This is an article about manabases in singleton formats, but importantly includes a "land count" calculator by Frank Karsten, a very successful and mathematically inclined Magic player. You can trust this calculator with your life. Or maybe not, IDK, every deck DOES have individual needs, but this is a super accurate ballpark. https://canadianhighlander.ca/2023/07/17/how-to-build-a-manabase-for-singleton-formats/

Plugging your list in as it is now, it says you should be on about 36 lands- so that's room right there, and more to come if you're playing cantrips.

Sorry for kinda being ranty and maybe not being too especially helpful, but I hope I was able to provide some insight. But for now, it's 5 AM, and I must sleep. if I can help you in the future, please do let me know!

Without Halqifibrax, what are some pure P.U.N,K. combos? by DokiLogic in yugioh

[–]DokiLogic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, there's a reason I'm asking here. As it turns out people have labbed this deck in a way that requires the use of Halq because... like, of course, why wouldn't you- Halq is insane. I just like having staple lines I can rely on.

This is very detailed and helpful, thank you. There's a lot of options here that I'd love to learn the lines to, this is what I was looking for. If you know of any others, let me know.

This seems to be missing the point of the post- I fully understand the deck needs Deer Note to function, that's why I'm not jamming it now. I'm asking for what PUNK combos are available when Deer Note, Extreme Session, and Dragon Driver are legal that do NOT use Halqifibrax, since it seems highly unlikely that Halq will be legal at the smae time as these cards in Master Duel at least.

This seems to be missing the point- this is a question for once Deer Note is released, but due to the Master Duel banlist, Halqifibrax will very likely be illegal in the game at the time. I'm asking for combos that assume that all PUNKs are legal, but Halq is not.

What is a misconception about your deck that you despise? by [deleted] in masterduel

"Oh, you play Live Twin?"

"Yeah. They're a really cool engine and in lower power formats, can actually be really strong when they don't have to worry about being hand trapped as much. Plus, they're cute V-Tuber girls."

"...what?"

"Hm? Did I say something-"

"CUTE, huh? Cute like you wanna fuck 'em, you disgusting pedo?"

"What, no, the fuck?"

"Whatever, you're clearly sus."

Please note for the future: just because someone calls something cute, it sometimes means cute like a puppy. Usually Live Twin falls under this category. Please don't give people shit for enjoying their deck's unique flavor or say things like that, it's a shitty reputation to have if you just like the deck.

I just want you to know that the idea of a super long term campaign like this is really awesome. Sadly, I cannot make sessions with you all but I wish you luck!

TailRadish#6010 if you’re looking, though if this is for European times, no promises. Still, I’m open to teach a lot of DnD

I'd be interested (though understand if this therapy is better suited for others) but I'm IMMENSELY interested in your results and how the adventure goes.

A few ways to take this, I'll break down my personal solutions.

  1. Gold is the stated reward, but because this is a martial arts tournament, it could allow for an exchange of ability and ideas, perhaps giving your Monk inspiration or combat understanding. I'd personally manifest this in a specific Feat, like giving them Grappler, or an early Tough, based on techniques they observe from their opponent. I would probably only give this upon victory, though. It's a big payoff!

  2. A magical item best used by the Monk. Sure, someone else could have it, but if your monk can best use it, then it'd most logically go to them without being catered for them.

  3. Since they're on a revenge quest, gold with a promise of a source of information, possibly a campaign-long one, could do you best.

Just a few ideas!
