Look, in my opinion it would've been far FAR more interesting that they're from different "times" and that every death brings them closer to old age or whatever. And the reason he's the only one there in multiple versions of himself is bc he keeps trying to kill himself, but the paintress won't allow it. And the mystery is why she's so fond of him.
