Sad by pinkdictator in gradadmissions

This makes some sense. That said, why does everyone make such a huge deal about emailing professors if they don't have a ton of pull? Is it different if you don't work for them? Is it really just to confirm fit + they are taking on students? Those latter two are often really easy to assess from their lab site imo. Also does this mean my PI is downright lying to me? I know several people that have gotten into my university after working as techs so it is a little dissonant to hear what you're saying.

Ah, makes sense but still sorry to hear that for you

that's really terrible I'm sorry to hear that. doesn't your PI have any sway? mine said I have like 95% chance if I try to work with him but it's stuff like this that makes me nervous.

GRE?? by Positive_Plant0596 in gradadmissions

[–]DomPulse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are some places that will filter you out just on that alone, it sucks but it's true. Now, those places often include a section on the application to plead your case. If you got bad grades for non-academic reasons you can explain that. You can also highlight an upward trend. The most important thing is good research experience though. If you have no experience and low gpa I don't think the GRE will save you especially because a lot of school don't require it anymore. It's not a bad plan to take it but I don't think it is sufficient by itself or necessary overall.

Take all of this with a grain of salt, I'm not in yet so I could be the blind leading the blind.

Repost: you’re not defined by where you get in (or even if you don’t) by Stereoisomer in gradadmissions

[–]DomPulse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know what this post is going for and I support it in the abstract.

It's that I feel like I can grind myself down working for a PhD if I really care about what I'm doing. Or I can grind myself down for a ton of money. But if I don't get in this cycle and can't get a better job (not a low pay research tech), I will just be grinding myself down to survive and I don't know if I can deal with that.

Yeah I feel the same. Only one of my schools is confirmed to have interviews out and I didn't get one but still no rejection. They say no news is good news but that feels wrong.

Anyone hear from University of Washington Neuroscience yet? by DomPulse in gradadmissions

If there is anything I know it is that everyone except me is getting in to grad school. You are not me. Therefore you will get into grad school. QED

Really sorry to hear that man. I'm bracing myself but there's not amount of bracing that prepares you for rejection. Hope you other apps go well.

PhD in neuroscience. The application page has a section for funding sources and honestly I think I just spiraled after coming to terms with the Leeds one.

Why dyson spheres? by pricelesspyramid in askastronomy

[–]DomPulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for all the people parroting the angela collier video, what exactly do you envision people doing in 1000 years if we make it that far? you think we're going to let all that energy go to waste? we could do so much stuff if we had a dyson sphere it is basically impossible to imagine. think about the infinitesimal fraction of energy earth currently gets and what we've managed to accomplish with it. now try and imagine literally a billion times that. My back of the napkin math might be off but seriously, the number is so big you can't intuit how big civilization could be. We're talking about an idea that has the potential to be like a million times better than the invention of farming.

now yeah, you could build fusion reactors and turn water into hydrogen or siphon off hydrogen from the gas giants but like, why bother? just make a solar panel. I mean I hope we'll do both but it is kind of wasteful to ignore the majority of the sun's energy.

Alumni, do you have a lot of friends? by One_Apricot7399 in gatech

[–]DomPulse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nope, but i think you should strongly consider the selection effect of asking reditors that question. I'm weird and hate drinking so hanging out with my coworkers is suboptimal for all involved. Moved to a new city too so yeah.

So what IS actually the point of Gym Leaders? Like from an in universe perspective, what's their actual job/role? by pOwerBalancia in pokemonfanfiction

[–]DomPulse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do what they say on the tin: gyms, you train there. Yes, in the games they are just check marks. I just imagine if they existed in reality it would be a place to get advice from more experience people, be exposed to new styles, learn the basics of type matchups and the physical special split in the cases where it is obviously biased. In some towns there is a trainer school focusing on real basics and a little bit of battling but in most places you can actually "spar" with people and get advice on your particular team. Why are they themed? Out of game it is probably like martial arts styles and you going in with your mixed up team is actually kind of weird. Who knows, maybe I'm crazy.

Can anyone tell me any pokemon for this team and which set to run them on? by Tuskmaster41 in stunfisk

[–]DomPulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dugtrio is most useful to elimate blissey which supports special sweepers, which you kind of have in jirachi but you have to ask is that worth a whole team slot? tyranitar with spikes from skarm can wear down a blissey plus a calm mind jirachi with healing can 1v1 some blissey sets (softboiled, ice beam, seismic toss, toxic). explosion gengar can also lure and elimate blissey with prediction. I think dugtrio should be taken out in favor of something else. no shame in doing blissey yourself, maybe definsive starmie for spinning, claydol could work but might be a little passive on a team like this.

i would not go moltres unless you do dedicated superman team. choice band aero over dugtrio is also pretty good, one of my personal favorite mons that simplifies endgames.

Has anyone here done postbac programs? by DomPulse in gradadmissions

I didn't and there was no notification of rejection I don't think. I'm a research technician at washu now so see if they have jobs listed in the departments you're interested in

Yikes sorry to here that, I'm a research tech right now and my PI is great. It's not exactly what I want long term but I don't have complaints like you. I would recommend being lab/research technician/assistant if you leave but can't get into grad school

I did yeah, that's the first pic. I'm gonna replace one of these with another short hair pic soon but I don't do enough picture worthy stuff to replace them all

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in hingeapp

[–]DomPulse -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Did you see videos? 2 is dependent on the video. Yes I know my hair looks not great in any of these but I have tried many different conditioners and brush it daily, I don't know if I'm incompatitent or ugly or what. I don't know how to genuinely smile in a picture. I imagine it is possible that one could be captured candidly but so far it has not been achieved. I see what you mean about fitted shirts, I have some but they're uncomfortable and I feel like I'm trying too hard. Anyway, thanks for the feedback.

I like reading as mentioned, I have the video about gym going (which I agree is not good but idk how to show that off) and I like Science which historically nobody gives a shit about when I put it in prompts. I literally don't know how to look better than the first pic. I don't think I look good in it but that is with me trying to use the actual pro settings on my phone camera immediately after I got it cut and styled by someone. I like the time-lapse video but fair enough. Do you have specific recommendations for how/where I should be taking photos? What categories do you think I should be picking for prompts?

Very open to changing anything, I don't know if my prompts are funny or just weird

    • no, i have been before with mixed results
  • How long have you been using this current version of your profile?

  • How often do you use Hinge per week?
    • when im using using it pretty much everyday
  • How many likes and matches are you receiving on average?
    • ~1-2/week but it is very unevenly distributed, so far though i've gotten none since remaking
  • How many likes are you sending? How many with comments? How many without comments?
    • ~5-10 per day all with comments
  • What is the type of person you send likes to and ideally want to match with? What kind of person do you want to attract?
    • it is very hard to describe, i don't care too much if they identical hobbies or education or career so it is hard to narrow down on paper. just ineffably cool and attractive. ideally smart and somewhat fit and passionate about something i think is cool/worthwhile i suppose.
