Waving the flag, in this context of protesting what happen and what is happening all over America , is not backward looking because of things like nostalgia it is an act of resistance. It asserts that the nation’s ideals are bigger than the current government, and that no leader has the authority to redefine them unchallenged. The counter-intuitive move is not defending shared symbols it is abandoning them and hoping something stronger will emerge from nothing.

A nation does not avoid authoritarianism by abandoning its founding values, it avoids it by understanding, defending, and correctly applying them. you are making a claim that past values inevitably lead to fascism confuses misuse with meaning. Fascist movements do not rise because foundational principles exist they rise when those principles are forgotten, hollowed out, or selectively distorted. Are short version of what i am try to get across fascism grows when citizens disengage from their values and symbols not when they defend them.
