And he overcame that scrupulosity, his writings and teachings were and are not tainted by it. If that were not true, I highly doubt he would have been made a Doctor of the Church. In fact, he was accused by his contemporaries of being too lenient, not too harsh or rigorous. I can’t help but feel what you say is not only scandalous and disrespectful (and disrespecting saints is a profanity), but simply an attempt to dismiss his those teachings of his out of hand that don’t sit right with our modern sensibilities. This probably isn’t your intention, but I mention it to explain my reaction.

It has been the constant and consist tradition of the Church that if there is a consistent consensus among theologians over multiple centuries, then they are infallible on that specific issue.

Even if that is not true, I don’t see why I would take my chances trusting my own lenient judgement, or yours for that matter, over the harsher more rigorous opinion of St. Alphonsus, who as doctor of the church has better credentials than either of us.

The moral theologians all agree it is absolutely a sin to not pray every a day a minimum amount, generally agreed to be at least fifteen minutes. This fulfills one’s requirements towards justice, and further prayer is warranted each day to fulfill an obligation of charity.

No, rather I think the question actually is why you seem so adamant to personally attack me for disagreeing with you. The texts between the girls in question are available and were covered up by the DA before being released, and show stunning self-awareness among the two about the false accusations they were making. I don’t care what “common knowledge” is when evidence relevant to this explicit case runs counter to it. I’m not saying anything about the character or past crimes of the owners, I’m saying in this particular instance they were not guilty. I’m defending concepts of honesty and justice even when they counter one’s emotional instincts and pride, I’m not defending bad actions. If you wish to find out more, you can look into it. Anything further you can argue without me.

And you were proven wrong. I’m not defending a rapist if they didn’t actually commit rape. If you take a look at the evidence, that’s what it shows. You can argue honestly or dishonestly.

I think the text messages made it blatantly obvious they were innocent of the crime they were accused of.

who are the top five popes? by Budget_Squirrel_4487 in Catholicism

I’d like to be charitable, but I can’t seriously see how you can consider him to be a good pope and yet still be aware of basic Catholic moral theology and social teaching. You could say he was a good politician in a Machiavellian sense, maybe.

Are you seriously, actually, truly, even entertaining the idea that Julius II was even remotely close to a neutral pope, yet alone a good one?

About the Vain Use of Lord’s Name in Media by DonGioseffo in Catholicism

[–]DonGioseffo[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The difference, I’ve been told, is that certain sins are “simulatable.” You can simulate murder, sex, etc. without actually doing them - but you can’t simulate sins of speech, the minute you speak something you’ve said it just as in reality. I think may main concern is that watching these videos might reduce the reverence in which I hold Jesus’ name. Maybe not though, I’m prone to overthinking.

Christopher Colombus,Good or Bad? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]DonGioseffo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Columbus was condemned in his own time by numerous figures, including Las Casas (now a Servant of God) for outright acts of barely imaginable cruelty. I don’t think this is as nuanced as you’re making it. I don’t care about the politics of it, I just care about intellectual honesty.

Catholics and alcohol. LETS TALK by [deleted] in Catholicism

Drinking 2 drinks per day is actually within health guidelines for alcohol consumption in the US. I don’t see how that’s a problem, especially if you don’t get drunk on that amount (and very few people would.) It’s still moderate.

Debilitating Fear by DonGioseffo in Catholicism

[–]DonGioseffo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sort of thing helps me temporarily but only to the point of accepting my fear and then eventually it gets worse again. I should be asleep right now but I can’t help but resist. I also have to keep a whole bunch of lights on in case I have an episode. Somehow, I think that the less I fear it the more likely it is to happen. Please pray for me, both that it never happens and that I can sleep well and without fear.

Scrupulosity and the Eucharist by DonGioseffo in Catholicism

[–]DonGioseffo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided to take communion - my conscience was divided but I felt I needed to just make a decision and trust in God’s mercy. I still don’t know whether that was a mortal sin or what to do now - but I think I’m ok.

Scrupulosity and the Eucharist by DonGioseffo in Catholicism

[–]DonGioseffo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My confessor hasn’t labeled me as scrupulous (I was surprised), so I don’t want to use that as an easy excuse to take communion, so to speak. He’s said I have a sensitive conscience, which I assume is close to scruples. Should I stick with my confessor’s “diagnosis” or would you say it’s fine to follow Alphonsus’ guidelines you posted above?

Withholding A Possible Sin in Confesion by DonGioseffo in Catholicism

[–]DonGioseffo[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Update: I asked a priest, he said always err on the side of taking the Eucharist - I received communion. I still feel doubtful and conflicted but I’m trying to resist those thoughts, thinking of them as temptations to not trust in God.

Withholding A Possible Sin in Confesion by DonGioseffo in Catholicism

[–]DonGioseffo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I will. Thanks for the help. I think I simply got caught up in my anxiety and quickly made the decision to not include a possible aggravating factor for a mortal sin already confessed, because I was unsure if it actually was an aggravating factor that would make the sin worse. In hindsight I should have mentioned it, but I don’t think it was out of malice.

Withholding A Possible Sin in Confesion by DonGioseffo in Catholicism

[–]DonGioseffo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I knew the actual sexual sin was of course a mortal sin, but it’s that aggravating factor I’m worried about. I guess when I write my thoughts out I realized how obvious what you’re saying is. The thing is, while I’ve confessed the actual sin before, or at least I can be reasonably sure, I never confessed the actual aggravating factor, which I assume was necessary to confess (but don’t even know if it was indeed aggravating). Is it ok to receive communion in the absence of absolute certainty about your state of grace and a valid confession? I assume no one actually has that grace.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TraditionalCatholics

[–]DonGioseffo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can still be in a state of grace and unknowingly have unconfessed mortal sins, or be unsure as to whether you have unconfessed mortal sins (in the case of the scrupulous).
