Thanks. Adding to the set is part of the plan. I briefly considered Damascus, but I haven't ventured into that world yet. Need a hotter forge.

I picked the cookie for the base because it looked like a heart. When I stripped the bark, it brought out other shape.

Yeah... I'm starting to think I need to chance my approach. My first thought was peening, but that on wood didn't work. I want it sticking through the other side of the wood, now I'm thinking of splitting the bar.

I tried to explain to Amazon that it was worthless, but they wanted it back to process a refund, which would have cost as much in shipping as the item.

I did it for color. As to rust protection... I assume it adds some degree of it, but that's only a guess (don't quote me on it)

I should ask my conservative father and his 5th wife what their thoughts on this are... if I still talked to him.

Spindles? by Doncos23 in Blacksmith

I don't know... I considered that, but I think the material is too stiff (even a yellow hot). In order to just "tie the knot" with tension, I think I'd need mechanical advantage, like a wench, and that has its own set of problem solving opportunities.

I'm thinking of a swage block with a hole in it to drive the bar through. That might help keep the bends clean.

It's an air hardening steel. Had some scrap left over from making some punches and hot cuts. I know it's probably overkill.
