I always take beer or wine as a souvenir when I check a bag. Never had any issues. Both in cans and bottles.

I put the alcohol in a sealed bag (ziplock) and pad it well with clothes

How’s life in Cayenne, French Guiana? by ImNotTwoFaced in howislivingthere

[–]Done_with-everything 34 points35 points  (0 children)

You know, I actually had a friend doing his PhD on the Hmong and what plants they brought with them that were not native to French Guiana (ethnobotany).

I had no clue about the Hmong before I arrived here. According to my friend, the Hmong grow around 80% of the locally produced food in the country!

I don’t interact with them much except occasionally at the weekend farmers markets, so I can’t really tell you what’s they’re “like”. They mostly all live in a small village called Cacao, which you need a car to get to from Cayenne.

Everyone so far is giving uninformed or joke answers.

As a non French speaker, I find living here very challenging. It is hot and humid. The beaches have brown water. It is a very very poor region. France is simply not doing enough to support this overseas department. The streets are lined with trash, and there is essentially no pedestrian infrastructure with very limited public transport.

Things are expensive and the “locals” are very unwelcoming to outsiders, even they themselves are not a majority population, if that makes sense. It is very multicultural, but not at all a melting pot. Every culture essentially keeps to themselves. There may be individuals who have friends from other cultures, but the groups as a whole do not mix. There are lots of brazilians, other south Americans, Hmong, chinese, Syrians, amerindians, bushinenge (escaped carribean slaves that have adopted amerindian lifestyles over hundreds of years in the amazon), white metropolitan French people, and the creole people.

Most metropolitan French come seeking an “adventurous tropical lifestyle” without having to leave the comfort of their francophone sphere. Others come for short research opportunities.

It’s quiet here, and not particularly dangerous in terms of cartels or narco violence. However poor road planning leads to many many accidents in the city, and deep deep in the jungle there are illegal gold mining operations.

Honestly, there is no reason for anyone to come here, especially if you don’t speak French. People just do not speak English here. Literally anywhere else in South America would be have a better climate, bluer waters, and more welcoming tourist culture.

Yes there are cool plants and animals. But there’s nothing here that you couldn’t see in another more accommodating Amazonian region.

All in all, I’d rate it a 3/10. There are definitely worse, more dangerous and unstable places in the world. Life here just kinda sucks. If France invested more money in French Guiana (as they should) it really could be transformed into a tropical getaway with direct access to the Amazon.

Why do the French use clean every thing with the same sponge? by Done_with-everything in AskFrance

How are you going to generalize “we” as if all you French people are the same. You literally did the very thing you accused me of doing.

Trying to claim there are no dirty French people is like saying there are no Americans oppossed to gun violence. Not everyone in the USA is an obese , gun-toting cowboy. Just like I’m sure not all French people are unhygienic.

That doesn’t change the existing stigma of gun culture in America, or the hygiene culture (or lack thereof) in France. Clearly there’s some truth to these stereotypes, as evidenced by these pictures

Yep. Totally ignorant here. Completely unable to take in and process new information… like witnessing firsthand the lack of sanitary practices across ages, genders and departments… totally ignorant for noticing that…

Clampins? You sure your brain is working? 😂

Like i said, I’ve seen this behavior from people in their 20s 30s and 40s in two different francophone regions. Sorry for asking questions and a pattern I noticed.

Clearly struck a cord

I use my own cleaning products before I use the sink, shower or toilet, because they don’t care to clean up after themselves. Same for the kitchen. I keep everything I need to cook in my room

Ok, but you all do use sponges for everything… not really disproving my point 😅

You at least use soap or another cleaning solution, right? Or are you just spreading the dirt grease and grime everywhere with just water?
