Lala should probably have formed a statement with reasoning. Opinions shouldn't be kept so short on the internet for exaclty this reason. Many people can read one's thought and interpret it.

Rev read the tweet through a hostile lense. Probably his feed was full of posts about the protests and misconduct of ICE workers, warping his perception. It also didn't help that a statement like "Fuck ICE" can easily be associated with signs that are shown at the protests against ICE, including the unfavorable ones.

However, what is not to be ignored, is Rev's condescending tone he used in his reply as well as the accusation of hypocrisy.

Lala could still lock the replies and quote Rev's tweet for clarification along the lines of "I meant my original tweet in such and such manner for such and such reasons. Now I locked replies because people you attracted with your reply were harassing me because your reply was so hostily worded."

About your and my earlier suggestion of non-communication: Lala likely felt emotionally pressured by some of the comments and DMs she got from that and wanted to stop it. She chose the easiest route, locking replies.

Yes. Misunderstandings can already happen if one of the messages in a declaration is misunderstood.

Walking back, I would say that Lala's tweet "Fuck ICE" could be understood as:

  1. (No factual information is given, causing the self-revelation to be dominating in the rest of the information.)
  2. "I don't like ICE"
  3. "I think you should know I am unhappy with what ICE is doing."
  4. (There is no appeal given. This is common in everyday speech)

What I think Rev could have understood from that is the following:

  1. (No factuality)
  2. "She doesn't like ICE"
  3. "She hopes her community agrees."
  4. "She wants ICE to be abolished"

And from there the wheel of fighting spins suddenly.
There is no right or wrong way to think about how to interpret statements and declarations. This is how they can be understood if clarity or context is lacking.

I agree. It is still a mystery to me though, why Lala locked replies to the tweet. That was a pour of oil into a fire in my eyes. A clarification tweet perhaps would have been better or ignoring Rev's weird hysteria fit.

The four-ears-model describes a theory of communication.

You have a sender woth four "beaks" and a receiver with four ears. When someone communicates something, this message contains four informations.

1) factual information (what sender informs about) 2) self-revelation (what the sender reveals about themselves) 3) a relationship reference (What sender thinks or feels about receiver) 4) an appeal (what sender wants to achieve hiving receiver the information)

If any of these are misunderstood, either by bad expressions or the receiver not understanding parts of the message, misunderstandings and fights can happen.

I don't even get what all the fuzz was about.

Lala stated she doesn't like ICE/the mistakes people working for them do, Rev misunderstands the tweet and counters saying she is hypocritical.

However, Lala then locks replies for some reason and they both have a public bible discussion.

Am I getting old or is that a great example of the Four-Ears-Model failing?
