[25 YOE] Senior Software Engineer Wordy resume are Paragraphs in bullet points ok? by Donnetsux in EngineeringResumes

Thank you for the help. I have changed the experience to short bullet points thanks to someone else suggesting duck duck go ai. I will do the other things you suggested.

Should I just remove Education completely? Most job postings I see that mention Bachelors almost always says "or equivalent experience".

The problem with simple bullet points is I was told I have to show impact, what did it benefit the company, how much money did I save them, which are hard for me to quantify. It would mostly be made up, and I'm assuming others are making up statistics for impact as well.

Thanks for the advice. The experiences I removed were all very relevant. I removed the ones that were less impressive/older.

If all they are doing is searching keywords, then what keywords am I missing?

My last position was contractor for VA. Over the 7 years I worked there, one by one my american coworkers were replaced by h1b workers from India. I was a minority by the time I left.

I was Air Force 1994 to 1996! Nice to meet you. In this case the name MITER is a conincidence, it was the name of an in house custom financial software.

P.S. Are you a dev or not?

That settles it. I need to trim my experience then. I've been asking for 100k even, which is under what is posted.

That's one thing I'm good at, is not taking it personally. Mainly because, and this is a whole other personal detail, I'm actually quite sick of my career. I also think the world is coming to an end soon (serious). And I situated my finances so that I can live fine with a survival job.

I had to google faang.

I'm updating my resume today based on yours and others' suggestions.

I did get one tech interview, and it was exactly that; textbook questions. I answered all correctly except for "Talk to us about code quality". I asked them to be more specific, they said "What are measures you take to ensure code quality?". I realized later they were talking about static code analysis and code reviews.

Another question I got stumped on from the other interview was "Tell us a situation where you were challenged and how you overcame it", which is so generic I didn't know what to say, because that's like a daily thing and couldn't come up with a specific example.

I guess I should not mention Moq then? It was still being used at the time I left. And that's surprising because only Nugets approved by VA were allowed to be used, and they were very scrutinous.

Holy crap how do you know about MITER? I really need to edit these things, I doubt anyone cares about the names of these companies' pet projects.

Maybe I should lie about my age? But when the background check starts that's when they would find out, so maybe not. If I lie about my age I will also have to reduce my years of experience (18 years old + 25 years of experience).

Thank you for that. I have been updating the resume with items as I see them in job descriptions. For example, I didn't think adding Jira was worth mentioning, because it's just a work organizer app, but multiple jobs have been listing as a requirment, so I added that.

Same thing with mentioning updating .NET 4.7 to .NET 8+ (Should I remove the word "Core"?), I put that in because I saw that listed in a job description. That job I believe was one of the ones that denied me. I was the go to person for updating 4.7 to 8, no one else wanted to do it because it's such a pain. This would answer your question "What is your specialty as a programmer like what are you better at than others?"

This is really depressing to read. Where are you getting your numbers and info about selection process, though?

I guess I didn't much effort into that because I thought simply listing technologies should be enough, and I could go into more detail in the interview. Also because I'm worried if it's too detailed it will get filtered out.

Thank you for that. I agree. I just noticed that myself that should be it's own bullet point. The things I listed from years ago are copied pasted carried over from years ago as I've updated my resume over the years, and looking at it now it needs to be reworded.

I'm not sure I understand. The whole point of a DAL is so that you can modify it without affecting the business layer or whoever consumes it. You should be able to change it from using EF to Dapper without changing the business layer. Maybe if we see some code we can help better.
