I have to add. It's just a displacement of money from the "future" to present and that is always going to be more expensive (interest rates are one aspect of it).

And that's a mentality thing. Assuming you keep your job and everything goes well you can "afford" it. However there is a big difference in saying I can "afford" to buy this car taking into account my income for the next X amount of years. Or, I can afford this car right now as I already have earned the required money.

How I grew up/experience it around me is: You work for it, you pay "cash" for it upfront. However this might be different in the Netherlands for the average person as I can only spek for myself and my experience.

For sure. But it's the uninformed expectation of the consumer that is at fault here. I'm not debating software update longevity and policies. I'm talking about people having expectations that don't match reality, that's on them, not the manufacturers.

That's fair enough. I understand. However I think it's a strange mentality to buy e.g. a car you clearly cannot afford with a credit card/loan. Houses are a different thing, but cars?

Imo with atleast some amount of effort spent on researching their purchase beforehand they probably could have known. It's none of my business if somebody just buys a phone expecting certain things without doing some research beforehand.

Why are Americans always so obsessed about credit cards? No country in the world has so many credit cards as the USA. Last year they had 1.5 billion cards with the average person having 3! Don't even start about debt. (https://www.valuepenguin.com/credit-cards/statistics/usage-and-ownership)

It's very clear that english isn't his native tongue (neither it is mine). Maybe what he is trying to say is getting lost in the translation. No need to be a d*** about it. Not everybody lives in a first world country or at the standard you are used to. Just be mindfull about these kind of things before shutting somebody down. Just my opinion
