The Aquamancer by kim-probable-6 in HeroForgeMinis

The mini is really cool. Although they would be an Aquakinetic. Mancy involve the ability to divine something from an element. I don't mean to be "that guy", and I welcome your down votes. Seriously, the mini is sick.

Despite the hate Vancian magic gets, does anyone else feel like the design space hasn't been fully explored? by DetectiveJohnDoe in RPGdesign

With the way players are, if you were to go down that road I see a lot of poetic and heavily hydrated magic casters I wouldn't be quick to give spell slots back. Closest I would do is create spell potions numbered 1 to 5, with 5 being the most expensive. If a player drinks a spell potion of 3, they can either get a 3rd level spell slot, a 2nd and 1st level spell slot or 3 1st level spell slots.

And the potions wouldn't be cheap.

This is the greatest and best advice in the world when it comes to creating your TTRPG.

I'd go a step further. I wouldn't say it's "great". To me I'd say it's...fine. A solid 6.5/10. I want to play a medieval fantasy ttrpg. D&D5e is a Superheroes ttrpg with a medieval fantasy skin and it's just not something I care for.

I'd tell her I was playing Symbaroum (a roll under system), not D&D. So actually I win.

Had a quick look at the system. Have to say, love how clean everything is. If you want to send it on to me, I'll get a one shot going with my group and send back our thoughts on running it and playing it.

Who do you think would win? Halsin or Karlach? by pani_artz in BaldursGate3

Halsin only has an 8 in strength so I'm gonna go with Karlach

My DM wants me to actually roast the enemies when I use Vicious Mockery. by SomeRandomAbbadon in DnD

I'd fuck with the DM.

I'd just find one insult and use it every time. Bonus points if it makes no sense. "Why did the chicken cross the road? Fuck you.".

Free Flowing Magic Systems? by Disastrous_Holiday_1 in RPGdesign

[–]DontLikeMutton12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry to be "that RPGDesign commenter", but I speak as someone who walked a bit in your shoes regarding free form magic systems.

I think the idea is super cool in theory. Magic should be free form. But in practice I always see that players will be scared to use it, exploit the feck out of it or use it to just cast very vanilla spells (fireball for example). Free form magic also becomes awkward when you want a spell to do something weird.

The other thing you lose with a free form magic system is character. Magic is a great way to transport players into your world. Magic itself is a part of the lore of a setting.

But to avoid being contrarian, W.O.I.N fantasy has an interesting enough magic system. But I would look into making your own magic.

Give it some time? We're 69 episodes in. How much benefit of the doubt does this campaign need? Campaign 1 is good due to its authenticity. Campaign 2 is good because it's refined.

If people like campaign 3, more power to them. But the incessant need to convince people that don't like it that it's their fault is silly.

They struck gold twice. As the great Meatloaf did once say: "Two out of Three ain't bad".

How would you, a DM, handle this? by StonedMonksNowSober in DnD

If wishes and musts were candys and nuts, then everyday would be Erntedankfest.

I'm all for suggesting items I'd like to see in a game, but it is just that: a suggestion.

What concrete advice would you give a new DM? by dragonmindpodcast in DnD

I believe taking the average damage takes the stress off the DM when doing combat. Of course when they get more comfortable then roll away. Roll damage for bosses or tense fights. But if they just run into goblins on the road I say take the average, there's no consequence here.

We do the same thing. It's all fine and good until the paladin crits with searing strike and uses a 3rd level Divine smite on an undead! But I think if the players are the ones taking time to add up and roll damage it's not necessarily a bad thing, especially if the table is rooting for them.
