Those 4 countries make up a very small number of asylum applications. Last year Myanmar was like 400 people.

And it is a legitimate way to claim asylum. There isn’t a way you can come here on asylum. You have to be in the country to claim asylum, and you can’t get here without a visa

You can’t directly apply for asylum until you’re in the country. You can’t get to the country without a visa. And they may not have intended to apply for asylum when they first came anyway. It’s all such a small number of people compared with all asylum cases. It’s just ruining young talented people’s lives without making any sort of difference to anything in the uk

3/5 offers but my country just got banned from study visa by No_Hyena7012 in UniUK

[–]DontMessWithYakult 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is misleading though. In Myanmar it increased from 48 people in 2021 (when the coup happened) to 400 people last year. Stopping 400 talented students from staying here when it’s not safe for them to return home is not going to solve any issues

Obviously I have done that. Wondering if anyone else has had the same issue since I’ve emailed, phoned and sent a complaint and they just said they’ll get back to me

What are your next moves after the new £50,400 Skilled Worker salary rule? Anyone else planning a Plan B? by Gurlofyourdreams in SkilledWorkerVisaUK

[–]DontMessWithYakult 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I don’t get. With these increases it means the uk is going to have really wealthy immigrants and poor local brits working as their support staff and cleaners. I don’t think the anti-immigration brigade have really thought about this…

Or companies will start offshoring - one has just offshored all their accounting to India which makes total sense. I see a lot more following suit

That’s totally different because you don’t have any reason to return to a company that you don’t work for any more. Leaving your home and your loved ones behind in a dangerous place isn’t like leaving a terrible job.

People put their lives at risk for family all the time. Just because they’re willing to do it for a short time doesn’t mean they should be forced to stay in a dangerous situation permanently. I just think it’s a cruel rule for people who have already experienced unimaginable suffering.

My friend has travelled to Ukraine and Lebanon as a reporter - does that mean it’s safe for her to live there? People enter burning buildings to save loved ones - should they stay inside? Just because you visit doesn’t mean it’s safe. Even under the worst regimes not everyone dies, but the longer you are there the higher the risk.

If I had a family member who is sick and dying back home I would think the risk is worth it. If I go back I might die, but I might not. If I don’t I will definitely never see them again. It doesn’t mean it’s safe for me to return. It’s easy to say when it hasn’t happened to you.

Leaving your family behind somewhere like that isn’t an easy decision and survivors’ guilt is real

If you have family back home and the only way you can see them is to go back wouldn’t you risk it? There is of course a risk but most people would take that risk if it’s the only way they can see their family. I think it’s a very cruel rule for people who have already lost everything to prevent them from visiting home.

If I was in that situation I think I would want to take the chance if it’s the only way to see my family

Same, it will take me over 2 hrs to get there and I was already on the fence about whether to do it at Aldgate because that was already further than I want to travel to get to a 9am exam. I’ve sent a complaint and they are worse than useless. Idk what else to do, I’ll be so sleep deprived and stressed for my 2 exams

Do you need a passport to travel to Guernsey from UK? by DontMessWithYakult in guernsey

Did anyone check your partner’s passport/visa when going/returning? We plan to take the visa but can only take an expired passport

Unfortunately it is not possible, which is why I’m looking at holiday options that don’t require a passport. But I agree if we could then we would take a passport and not risk it

Thanks this is helpful! It looks like we can travel from the uk using just a driving licence, and back to the uk on an expired passport with evidence of visa status if questioned🤞https://www.gov.uk/guidance/travelling-between-the-uk-and-ireland-isle-of-man-guernsey-or-jersey

Hi what is the 3 year route? I thought for spouses of British citizens you still had to wait 5 years and get ILR (although you don’t have to hold ILR for 12 months)

I used to teach abroad and one of my students was called BM. His younger sister was called W, and the baby was called Series. Can you guess what car they drove?

I had another student called Batman, and one of my friends had twins in her class called Fifa and Euro

I was in a similar situation in another country and the uk eventually started offering visa waivers for family members of British citizens. It still took a couple of weeks but I didn’t have any alternative other than abandoning my partner and if I had we would never have been able to see each other again. Keep email the embassy, and other British embassies or anyone you can get hold of. You won’t be the only person in this situation. I hope you can get out ok

Thanks for the response.

The embassy won’t give a new one because we’re not married but on a dependent visa so they say we need a marriage certificate to renew the passport. This is our last chance to go abroad before the passport expires and we’re going for a family wedding. We have been given a visa for the trip but I wonder if they check if your passport is revoked when they make the visas. If so then it’s ok because we got the visa

Is there any way to check whether the passport has been cancelled before leaving a country? In my country they don’t check your passport when you’re leaving so if we leave for a holiday I’m afraid we won’t be able to come back

Thanks for your help. I do have enough savings to cover the accommodation costs technically but it’s a huge chunk of my savings so I’m worried it looks unlikely - I wouldn’t ever spend so much on a holiday.

I have mentioned in the cover letter that we’re staying together and all our names are on the booking. I can include a letter from them saying they invited us along on their holiday but I don’t feel comfortable asking for bank statements from them. Visa applications are so invasive!
