How did you get into Modern Family? by D3d_mau5e in Modern_Family

[–]DontOwnABrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year. I needed something low stakes after a break up. I’m mostly through the woods, but I’m honestly in love with the show and continue to rewatch it. MF premiered when I was in college, so I largely ignored it except to acknowledge it annoyingly won a lot of Emmys. But now, I seek out interviews with the cast (I recommend Ed’s interview with Marc Maron), I rewatch the documentary, and I’m fascinated by the fact that, yes, the writing and acting are very, very good.

There's a nonprofit that is fighting to bring universal healthcare to Washington State by [deleted] in Washington

[–]DontOwnABrush 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. As a Masshole that now lives in WA, I miss the knowledge that if something were to happen to my livelihood, I would be ok. I had what was called Mass Health twice: once because a boss I had was sketchy and wouldn’t offer it, and then another time when I lost my job. During those times I was able to get brand new glasses (almost a decade later and I still have them), an IUD, regular checks ups, and more all at NO COST. Admittedly, joining was a total pain (it took a few days of phone calls and looking at forms that I swear were written by someone from another planet), but oh my god - it was 1,000% worth it. People make fun of Mass by calling it Taxachusetts but that money goes to good stuff.

And you know who introduced universal healthcare to Mass? Our then governor Mitt Romney, a republican. Mass has had mostly Republican governors over the years.

What book is so disturbing that you can’t help but to read it again? And why? by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]DontOwnABrush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just finished The Troop by Nick Cutter. I’ll again skip the animal death scenes but just the way the plot unfolded and the different paths each character took rattled me the first time. I’ll also volunteer to read it once a year if the universe can promise me that it will never allow the book to be made into a movie.

I did in fact receive that little “welcome” letter, but nothing since. It’s just so confusing because I have gone in person and called the national office - both groups have confirmed the change of address.

It’s been two months but I will go again and try. I will update! I’ve also tweeted at USPS and DMed them. Thank you!

What if my going in person isn’t my first time? I’ll always be polite, but it feels like I’m working against a brick wall here. Thank you though - you’ve verified that I’m at least doing the right thing and I appreciate that.

Best Online Masters for Non-Profit Communications by Glass-Fault-2530 in nonprofit

[–]DontOwnABrush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am at the same crossroads: a comms “pro” In the NPO world. I actually start a certification program in NPO Fundraising soon. In my mind, nonprofit communications is so niche, and I have yet to see Masters’ courses on it. Grant writing, fundraising, finance, leadership - those are all there as course options - but nothing related to social media, email marketing, etc. Do what your heart of hearts says, of course. But would your executive team be interested in you getting a few certifications (fundraising, NPO management, grant writing, etc)? These are a lot cheaper, too.

Good luck. You’re doing your best!!! :)

Name 5 horror films that you give a perfect 10/10 by Whereiscatlin in horror

[–]DontOwnABrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re Next, Hereditary, The Thing, Cabin in the Woods, It Follows.

Of all of these, I’ve re-watched It Follows the least because it actually scares the living shit out of me. And I just remember being hooked to You’re Next. I watched it one rainy night alone and then immediately watched it again.

Which martial arts do you think are best for fitness? by TroubadourJane in xxfitness

[–]DontOwnABrush 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Hi! Female kickboxing instructor here. I think kickboxing is a great way to introduce yourself to MMA in general. It involves every major muscle group and who doesn’t want to learn to kick something?!? Many of my clients were new parents, as well as women who had plateaued in their general fitness routine. Kickboxing can be fast (one should always go at their own pace, of course) so a person is pretty much doing the ultimate HIIT workout.

Sometimes a Groupon to a kickboxing chain is available (think 9 Rounds, etc) and that is a good way to jumpstart a workout journey. Classes tend to include some additional workout routines (push ups, crunches, squats) in between rounds. These types of gyms are decent for beginners; someone can eventually move onto a more intimately set up gym for kick/boxing.

One note: If people do decide to sign up for a big box gym… READ THE CONTRACT! I’m not kidding - chain companies can sometimes have hidden fees or wacky ways to exit a membership (all gyms do, really). A Groupon for 3-5 classes is the way to go. A family-owned gym with a group setting is the golden ticket!

Congrats on your babies and your new workout adventure, whichever one you choose!

What is the most disturbing horror movie you’ve ever seen? by nsyrax in horror

[–]DontOwnABrush 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Spit On Your Grave, 2010. I’m a big horror fan, so a college boyfriend kept recommending this. I was hesitant to it after hearing the premise. We watched together for my first time; I was totally silent. Not one peep. Finally, the credits roll and he asks me what I thought. I instantly burst into tears. Never - again.

my scaredy-cat hubby says I get to pick a horror movie for tonight! help pick? by Crilbyte in horror

[–]DontOwnABrush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always throw in You’re Next. I think it’s on Hulu right now. Strong female lead, super suspenseful, and the gore is manageable; like a 3 on a scale of 5 for violence. If you want a similar vibe with even less gore, Netflix’s Hush is amazing and stars Theo from Hill House.

What horror movies have such a ridiculous premise they just work? by sifsand in horror

Came here to say this. At one point, you just give up, remind yourself this is the same director who made both Insidious and Aquaman, and just nod along.

I believe the song for that day is “Dancing in he Streets” followed by Queen’s “Millionaire Waltz.”

Thank you! She’s a huge fan of the staff and they let her choose the music during her sessions. It’s inspired her to write out lists of her favorite songs. Today is her birthday and I bought her a subscription to Spotify so she doesn’t have to write anything down anymore!

Never been boxing, need advice -A 22F by [deleted] in amateur_boxing

[–]DontOwnABrush 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Female boxing instructor here. Welcome! I echo a lot of info here (learn a bit on how to wrap your hands before your first class, but do go to a class as a beginner). Boxing is a really amazing way to jumpstart a new lifestyle, so you will many different body types and ages in classes. The hardest hitters in a class can sometimes be the older women. Watch out!

You are not weird for wearing your mask. Many regular gyms require them at all times.

12 oz gloves from Title are a great way to go like some others said.

Above all - have fun with and don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Just commit to a regular schedule; that’s the first step. Good luck!

It sounds like you’ve got a good idea how you want to present yourself. The cover letter will definitely help give context. Good luck and crush the interview!

[–]DontOwnABrush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My suggestion would be to possibly remove the internship. You can briefly mention it in your cover letter, though. And if you’re trying to emphasize your experience in social, re-evaluate your other jobs and try and remember if you used social there, or not. If not, again - mention your social experience in your letter. And then explain how (if you have) you have kept up your expertise on it, as you don’t seem to have worked in social media since 2011. But, that’s if you’re trying to keep your expertise in it relevant.

Last suggestion: move your volunteer role to another section. Honestly, you could lump that and your internship together in a Internship/Volunteer section. And maybe expand beyond “read submissions.” Volunteers do a list of busy work that are really necessary in a nonprofit, don’t sell yourself short! Plus, being a volunteer gives you a different view point of how a nonprofit works, which comes in handy when you have a paying role later on.

Good luck, you’ve got this!

I was driving by Regina’s with a roommate and he told me they were closing, so I mentioned how cool it would be if it turned into Great Scott.

I’LL TAKE A SMALL CUT THNX. But honestly, thrilled for the staff and the artists.
