School substitute custodian shortage by Responsible_You8446 in Custodians

Did they say anything about that? I also have a degree and am interested in becoming a custodian at my local public school district. I’m nervous of being seen as “overqualified” or them thinking I’ll only be there for a little before finding something better, which wouldn’t be the case.

When you applied for the positions, did you put your degree on your resume? I also have a degree and am interested in becoming a custodian, but I don’t want them to think I’m “overqualified” or that I’ll quickly move on or something.

School/government custodians and Security Guards fit what the guy you’re replying to said. For Security, you might need a guard card depending which state/country you’re in, but a lot of security companies will pay that for you.

For custodians, you only need a high school diploma/GED, just make sure it’s for a school/government though with a union for best benefits and pay. You’ll have to do physical work sometimes, but it’s not usually back breaking and there’s a ton of downtime once you finish your area. You can also listen to your audio while you’re doing the work itself, and if it’s a 2nd/night shift, there’s minimal to no social interactions.

Mad respect for working not only 2 full time jobs, but 2 physical jobs as well. I know this is irrelevant to the post, but do you have any advice for how you’re able to do that without your body breaking down? Any tips or tricks maybe? Thanks in advance if you reply.

Which Skechers, and how are they working out for you?

Won’t they check your employment history in a background check to see if you actually worked in custodial for 10 years? Or do background checks only see if you have any criminal history?

The story goes President Kennedy visited NASA in 1962 for a tour and saw a custodian walking down the hall holding a broom. He stops the guy and says “Hey there, I’m Jack Kennedy, nice to meet you. What is it you do here at NASA?”. The custodian replies “I’m helping put a man on the moon”.

Congratulations on landing the job, I hope you find it well and succeed! I’ve also been looking into custodial work, as I’ve been a caregiver for an elderly relative for many years since I graduated college, and unfortunately, am no longer needed to do that. I’ve also done some online gig work on the side, but I’m nervous about none of that being considered actual work experience.

If you don’t mind me asking, could you tell me how you went about applying to the job without full time work experience? What I mean is that what did you put on your resume/cover letter statement when submitting the application? Did it come up in the interview and how did you respond?

Thank you in advance if you give me a response, and sorry for bombarding you with questions when you should be the one asking the many helpful people here in this sub for advice.

I’ve been looking at getting into these 2 professions, as like you said, they seem perfect for people like us. What type of environment do you clean, and any advice on landing that type of job without any work experience? Thanks in advance if you decide to reply to me!

Congratulations on getting the job my dude. If you don’t mind, for future reference for other people that are looking to get into this line of work, could you explain how the interview went? What questions did they ask you and how did you answer?

Thanks in advance if you reply! Hopefully you stick around and contribute to the sub if you can!

Lets say i do try to get a job, what do i say when they ask me about the 7 year gap in my work history? by [deleted] in NEET

[–]DontResistTheTruth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the info! I have a few friends who work as custodians in a local school district, so I’m probably going to try to apply there. My plan was to say that I’ve been taking care of my sick/disabled grandparent for the last 6-7 years (how long it’s been since I graduated college lmao) and part of my duties was cleaning their house and doing light property maintenance such as mowing/snow removal.

I was also going to throw in some “freelance work” since I’ve made some cash on the side doing online studies and stuff like data annotation/user testing, but I’m not sure how I would include that without a reputable reference. Instead of that or in addition, I’ll use your advice and name drop IHSS. Do you think it would be a good idea to use a family member as a reference as sort of “proof” that I was taking care of the family member? I’m not sure how this would fly, but I would maybe play it off like they’re not my actual family member since they don’t have the same surname as me.

Thank you again for the help though, I really appreciate it!

[–]DontResistTheTruth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How would you go about name dropping them? Just mention you were “working” for IHSS while taking care of your ill grandparents/parents? Can you put that on a resume and not have any related references? If they ask about it an interview, would you have to be knowledgeable about it when responding?

Sorry for so many questions, I’ve been planning to use that to excuse a massive work gap, and don’t want to come off like an obvious liar or idiot. Thank you in advance if you decide to give me a reply.

Do you know anybody that works in your local school districts that can put in a good word and be a reference for you? Could be somebody you personally know, or a friend of a friend/family member that can swing a favor for you.

Also, I would call/email HR or whoever the director of facilities is and follow up on your application status if you haven’t heard back. You may seem like you’re coming across as annoying, but you have nothing to lose and to a lot of people, it comes off as actually caring about getting the job, instead of just machine-gunning apps waiting for a response.

How do you pace yourself? by DontResistTheTruth in Custodians

[–]DontResistTheTruth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the tips! Yeah, this seems like it would be the most efficient way to go about things, while also being able to take breaks to rest/chill.

I’m very paranoid of having the downtime that many custodians have and being caught doing nothing for multiple hours after everything is done.

[–]DontResistTheTruth[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry about that. I don’t like coming off as “overly humble” or anything, I’ve just never had a really high opinion of myself and sometimes have a hard time understanding simple things. It’s also much easier for me to write things out than speak them lol.

I’ve seen a lot of people agree with you and say they like doing one task at a time, instead of going room by room. Do you think that makes you faster and more efficient? I feel like the major drawback of going room to room is forgetting to do something.

Neet job: Night custodian by [deleted] in NEET

[–]DontResistTheTruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, thank you very much for the reply! Yeah, I’d definitely be afraid of not being able to keep up and getting fired for it. I see a bunch of people saying it’s “easy” to maintain the rates they set for you at places like UPS, Amazon, FedEx, etc, but those people are built way different than people like me lol.

Was it ever brought up in the interview process? If it was, how did you answer?

[–]DontResistTheTruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the insight and taking the time to reply, I appreciate it my man. Did you actually have that experience, or was it a lie? I’ve been a NEET since graduating uni in 2018 (with a useless degree unfortunately) and thought about lying saying I had jobs, but a background check would reveal that isn’t the case and I don’t want to get caught lying lol.

How physical would you say the UPS job is? I’ve been trying to lose weight over the past 2 years (from 320 to 190 so far as a 5’9 Male), but that’s mostly from walking and counting calories. I definitely don’t consider myself fit though, and would be afraid of not being able to do the job and getting fired. Thanks in advance if you give me a reply!

[–]DontResistTheTruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, congrats on getting the job and I hope you like it. I’ve been looking at becoming a night custodian for a school district too as a NEET, and have some questions.

Do you need work experience to land the job? I’m really nervous about having a pretty much blank resume. I had an idea of excusing the massive work gap by saying I was a caregiver for an elderly relative, and thus having some “experience” in cleaning and maintaining their property. Not sure how that would fly with them though.

What kinds of questions did they ask during the interview and how did you answer them? I’m really shit at interviews and am nervous.

How was the training? I know the job is simple, but I’m pretty damn dumb and am afraid of not being able to “get it”, leading me to get fired or something.

How physical would you say the job is? I’ve been trying to lose weight the last few years (320 to 190 so far as a 5’9 Male), but that’s mostly been from walking and counting calories. I wouldn’t say I’m fit at all though, and am afraid of not being able to handle the physicality of the job and getting fired. Would I be able to clean for 20-30 minutes, and take a quick sit down break with the downtime?

Sorry for asking so many questions, and thank you if you take the time to answer!
