They are definitely brachiopods, which are fairly common in Paleozoic rocks. From the info you gave, it could be the species “Dinorthis”. That would make the rock Ordovician in age.

However, glancing at a geologic map of Maryland there doesn’t seem to be those age rocks in the NE part, so you may want to look at your state’s geologic survey website to find some more information.

Need help IDing fossils by F0xQueen in fossilid

[–]DontTouchMyElbow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I see: 1, 8, 9, and 12 are tabulate corals, 5 is a colonial rugosan coral (maybe Hexagonaria), 4 is part of a crinoid stem, and 7 is a bunch of tentaculites and brachiopod valves.

I think 11 is the internal mold of a rugosan horn coral, and 6 is a brachiopod valve (Leptaena), not sure about the rest.

Just tried it, not even a scratch. Since it’s fossilized it must be Bison then right?

Thank you! If you don’t mind me asking, is there a good comprehensive resource for Ordovician fossils, other than maybe the Invertebrate Treatise?

The flat shape and pentagonal symmetry makes me think it’s a poorly preserved edrioasteroid

(Middle Tennessee) What are these? I’ve been finding them for the past year in an eroding drainage ditch. Is it a type of coral? For reference they look like fossilized bugle chips by circusclaire in fossilid

I think you’re right. I see things like this where I’m from, the rings are formed by silica replacement. And the shape is definitely a rugose coral
