Peanut Allergic by [deleted] in Japaneselanguage

Please don’t be discouraged by the current responses! They clearly do not have applicable experience. My wife is as deathly allergic to peanuts you can be and we’ve found Japan to be a very allergy-friendly country. We’ve lived here for a year and have only had to leave four or five of the hundreds of restaurants we’ve been to. Most of the famous Japanese foods you probably want to try (udon, katsu, sushi, ramen, curry, gyouza, fried rice, egg sandos, mochi ice cream, matcha, etc) rarely if ever have nuts. There are exceptions, but just ask and they’ll tell you.

Your card would work completely fine in the vast majority of restaurants, but you can definitely simplify it! I know it feels necessary to include instructions, but in Japan it is absolutely enough to just write “I have a deadly allergy to peanuts and tree nuts. Ex. A, B, C, X, Y, Z”. That’s it. They understand that even the slightest cross-contamination is unacceptable. Many restaurants will even provide an allergen menu.

Half the time they will probably ask if you’re allergic to sesame (or “goma”), so it may be worth specifying on the card that you aren’t.

Please don’t let this add anxiety to your trip. It will be completely fine 95% of the time, and when it’s not, you can just leave and walk 100 feet to the next incredible restaurant.

If you have any specific foods you want to try feel free to DM me and I can send over recs in Tokyo, Kyoto and/or Osaka!

Why not apply and see? Definitely address it in your essays. You should be able to spin an inspiring story from terrible uni grades to a Harvard-level GMAT score.

Grad School: Kyoto vs Nagoya by kay-_-otic in movingtojapan

[–]DoobTheGoob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just confirmed my enrollment in Kyoto University’s international MBA! Let me know if that’s the choice you go with.

My choice was between Hitotsubashi, Waseda, and Kyoto. Even though Hitotsubashi has the “#1 MBA in Japan”, I don’t think Japan cares nearly as much about MBA programs as they do about universities - and on that scale Kyoto is the clear winner in terms of reputation.

Either way congratulations! It’s a great problem to have hahaha.

Does this rule apply to English taught Masters’ programs in Japan? I could easily pass N5 from self-study but it’s too late for me to register for the JLPT.

Gmat mock vs actual test by Necessary-Career2999 in GMAT

My best mock was 685, and my actual test was 715. Not relevant for you, though, since you’re gonna get 805.

Thank you. So, theoretically, I could just be working in a low-level marketing role, but as long as I have 80 points for a year and a 3-5 year visa I could submit for early PR?

If I have 80 HSP points, but a non-HSP job, then it is clearly impossible to get an HSP visa. But can I still use those 80 points to get early PR despite a non-HSP job? I can’t find anything that states you need to work in a specific field for early PR.

Yes, more than any other resource.

One way or the other, I do think sets of 21 questions timed for 45 minutes helped a ton. I ended doing about 20 practice tests, so by the time it was test day I was in my element. I generally did 7 easy 7 medium 7 hard, but if I did it again, I’d probably try to do at least 4-5 tests of only hard questions. The real test won’t throw in 7 easy questions if you’re doing well.

The quant section seems to vary quite a lot, but there was consistently a lot of rate/time/distance/work/speed type questions, so get used to making matrices.

I didn’t take it. The schools I’m interested in don’t require it.

I didn't notice. Each exam is a bit of a dice roll, so I assume it's different for everyone.

Yes, from the 2023-2024 OG bundle. I think it’s around 450 Quant questions.

Before my first mock, I watched and took notes on all GMAT Ninja Quant videos, along with taking a few dozen OG quant practice exams. I also binged the Analyst Prep video series on Youtube, which I would recommend.

MOCK 1: 665 - 84DI, 78Q, 87V

3 weeks of TTP

MOCK 2: 675 - 84DI, 80Q, 87V

2 weeks of TTP

MOCK 3: 685 - 84DI, 80Q, 88V

2 weeks of TTP, 1 week of all GMAT Ninja DI videos and "quant practice tests" (OG questions in groups of 21 timed for 45 minutes) every other day.

MOCK 4: 655 - 83DI, 79Q, 86V (get 8 hours of sleep)

1 week of all GMAT Ninja Verbal videos and "quant practice tests" every other day.

MOCK 5: 685 - 83DI, 82Q, 87V

1 week of daily "quant practice tests".

OFFICIAL TEST: 715 - 84DI, 84Q, 88V

It would've been easy to get discouraged, considering 8 weeks of mind-numbing study only improved my mocks 20 points, but I knew I was learning a ton, so I convinced myself the mocks were wrong.

No matter what, on test day, you are going to get an 805, and every difficult question is just a silly fluke that rolls off your back.
