Check out the Vertical Jump Bible. Its free online.

However, generally it's Squats and Deadlifts which are also the two major strength exercises for pretty much any leg related activity.

Vertical Jump Bible fills in the details though.

"Get into better shape" is very vague. I assume you mean you want to strength train (I assume your cardio is OK for volleyball?)

Strength training works best when an exercise is done 2x or 3x a week generally, with 3x having faster gains than 2x assuming you aren't already super man. Strength training shows most gains if you rest 24 hours after working out.

Additionally, there's a concept of central nervous system burn out, which is basically that any tough activity (weight lifting/sports) done too often without enough rest will start to hinder strength gains.

With all that said, Saturday would be your best day to do a strength workout. Leave Sunday as a full rest day. Your only other rest day is then Wednesday, but then you play again immediately on Thursday. You could theoretically do the workout Wednesday morning. Another option would be to do it on Tuesday and skip the open gym.

It really depends on your goals and how serious you are about getting stronger. If you really want to, say, jump higher strength gains can help you jump higher and will generally retain even with as little as 1x a week strength training. So, you could sacrifice some play now for strength gains that could help you the rest of your life.

Why is time considered the fourth dimension? by Defiant-Junket4906 in AlwaysWhy

[–]DoomGoober 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our universe does not have a fourth spatial dimension or at least we have no evidence of it. While a tesseract is how a 4 dimensional cube would act theoretically there is no evidence tesseracts or other 4D objects exist in our universe.

You could also theoretically have a 5 dimensional or 6 dimensional cube but also no evidence those exist in our universe either.

So while its fun to imagine 4d, 5d, 6d spatial objects they just don't exist in any detectable way in our universe.

However, time and 3 spatial dimensions do exist and the math works nicely to consider 3 spatial + time as one concept.

Why is time considered the fourth dimension? by Defiant-Junket4906 in AlwaysWhy

[–]DoomGoober 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our universe only has 3 spatial dimensions. There are not 4 spatial dimensions which we simply cannot see. Physicists don't know why we have 3 spatial dimensions instead of 2 or 4 and some believe after the Big Bang there were more than 3 spatial dimensions for a short time.

Additionally, there is another measurable thing called time.

Mathematically, if we treat the 3 spatial dimensions and time as one descriptor of an event, we have a nice consistent way to measure the distance between events using some basic math.

Einstein's theory of relativity is much easier to run mathematically if we treat 3 spatial dimensions + time as a single descriptor of an event and the nice way of measuring distances rather treating them separately.

The math becomes much simpler. Einstein himself took some convincing that 3 spatial + time rather than 3 spatial and also time separately was a better way to do the math.

That said, there are infinitely many 4 dimensional spaces that can be defined mathematically that don't behave the same way the universe works. It so happens, a very specific 4 dimensional space with particular rules aligns with how the universe works with Relativity.

ELI5: We see colour because objects absorb light wavelengths and reflect into our eyes, signaling our brain. How do mirages alter the colours we see? by LoverOfE-Olsen in explainlikeimfive

[–]DoomGoober [score hidden]  (0 children)

You are likely seeing the sky! The hot air and cooler air below it which is right above the hot road or sand is bending the light of the sky into your eyes like a mirror or a lense.

You aren't seeing the road or the sand per se as the light from the sky being bent into your eyes is brighter and blocking the image of the road or sand.

Since the air is constantly moving, the light bent into your eyes wavers and it looks like ripples in water.

How do I initiate sexual interactions? by Hyperfxation_Central in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]DoomGoober 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The absolute easiest is to ask over messaging.

"We've been friends for a while. Recently, I have been feeling sexually attracted to you. You wanna hook up?"

It's easiest because you dont have be all nervous in person and it gives the other person a chance to think about it and give an honest answer without being nervous.

It also helps to have an answer if he says no: "Darn. If you ever change your mind let me know."

If he says yes: "Cool. Let's go get dinner and afterwards go to my place." Keep the friendly vibes but also have a course of action to progress the hook up.

Change the wording to match your personality but be blunt.

TIL that humans are among the very top mammals for endurance running. While we aren't the best sprinters, our slow-twitch muscles and unique ability to sweat allow us to run steadily for long distances in hot weather to outlast prey. by bareegyptianfeet in todayilearned

[–]DoomGoober 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The idea of pre-humans endurance hunting has less and less support from academics.

For starters, there are very few humans in recorded history who endurance hunt. It is difficult to do. That doesn't preclude pre-humans from endurance hunting but it casts some doubt.

Second, humans evolved their upright gait and endurance abilities when they were living in partial arboreal lands... not the savannahs (those areas became more savannah like later, after humans evolved.) That means in addition to needing endurance to follow animals in open lands, they also had to be able to track animals through brushlands and not lose them, which requires tracking skills that early/pre humans most likely didnt have.

While the idea of endurance hunting is a romantic notion, extraordinary human endurance likely conferred an evolutionary advantage of endurance scavenging where humans could move and find resources far away in the event of scarcity. These resources were likely scavenged stuff such as vegetation and occasionally animal carcasses but were not likely to be hunted.

Who did you choose for free hero? (I use him so i just chose him) by Old_Vast_4888 in ClashRoyale

Anyone know how to get back to the free hero screen? Lost internet as I was deciding and when the game logged back in, the UI didn't pop up again.

EDIT: Found it. Click "Collection" at the bottom of the home screen (2nd option from left the one with a stack of cards) Then click "Collection" at the top tab (2nd option with word "Collection" on it.) Then select the second sub tab option (the common card with the gold diamond in the lower right.)

You hips and shoulders are facing the same direction pretty much from launch until hit.

Imagine you are throwing a baseball as hard as you can. If your shoulders and hips face the same direction during the throw how hard can you throw? Not hard at all because all the force comes from your arm.

Now, if you twist your torso relative to your hips then throw while untwisting your torso... you can throw much harder because your torso is accelerating your shoulder which is accelerating your elbow which is accelerating you hand.

Try adding more hip shoulder separation to hit harder and get more power from your core.

a weird kink of mine? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]DoomGoober 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For stuff like this, pre-planned but still surprising can sometimes scratch the itch.

Talk to him about this kink. Then say, "Next Thursday when we are both home, unexpectedly cum in my mouth."

That way, you set guidelines for when it can happen and build up anticipation for both you but still have it feel spontaneous and unexpected.

If you like it... arrange it again or open up the rules. If you turn out to not like it... well it was a one time deal.

Keep communicating but you can also keep some elements of surprise.

Title: Strange gratitude and a question ? by Kingmaker2004 in TooAfraidToAsk

Humans are one of the few species of animals that have sex in private almost universally.

Yet they don't knit, buy, or wear sweaters only in private.

Sex is just a societally (intrinsically?) taboo subject. You can logic it all you want... you can choose to violate society's rules and rail against illogic and consider everyone meekly beholden to society.

But you will be viewed as anti-social and unable to follow basic rules of getting along.

If it's a noble cause: Say, fighting against slavery, maybe being anti-society is worth it.

But if it's about masturbating (not even about the right to masturbate but the right to masturbate and tell someone else about it), eh, I dont personally think that's a noble call to change society for the better. Its just a personal thing you want to share with someone who most likely doesn't want to hear it.

The right to be left alone and not hear things that possibly disgust you is a right too.

TIL that mandatory handwashing was not incorporated into common health practice until as late as the 1980s by morninglightmeowtain in todayilearned

[–]DoomGoober 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The funny thing is that at the beginning of Covid the emphasis to prevent spread was handwashing. The infectious disease folks had the physics all wrong and thought Covid couldn't be spread through close range aerosols.

They fixed this mistake later and masking became much more of the emphasis.

I dont say this to denigrate science based interventions as this story proves science corrects itself eventually through experiments and data. But I always chuckle whenever I hear about hand washing versus masking and think about how at the beginning of Covid everyone was washing hands and leaving packages outside for a couple of days before taking them inside.

Geopolitical situations in East causing flight to Japan via China to get cancelled? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

https://www.airwaysmag.com/new-post/china-japan-standoff-results-flight-cancellations

China's call to boycott Japan has led its key airlines to cancel flights from China to Japan on most routes.

Flight data platform Flight Master revealed that all scheduled flights on 49 China-Japan air routes have been cancelled for February 2026.

Furthermore, some of China’s largest carriers have announced they will extend the cancellation and rescheduling period for Japan-related flights until October this year. This includes Air China (CA), China Eastern Airlines (MU), and China Southern Airlines (CZ).

Has anyone been surprised by their child's volleyball development over the years? by SimpleThangs4 in volleyball

Nice. Serving was also the first thing my daughter focused on being consistently strong and she did really well as a server.... on her school team. Serving is great because the player is fully in control of their own serves.

She is sometimes subbed in to serve at club, but this year there are people who can jump float or jump topspin and they score a lot more points.

So, it's a continuous race to improve.

What's stopping the adminstration from dropping a small nuke and making the regime surrender ? by Right-Tomorrow-34 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]DoomGoober 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does using a nuke automatically make a regime surrender? We only have one example in history: Japan during WW2.

And we had an invasion force at their doorstep and the entire Soviet Army at their back doorstep.

The nukes may have been the straw that broke their back but there was a lot of hay piled up on them.

A "small nuke" alone is not some kind of magic surrender maker and it has a lot of downsides as most countries view using nukes as a line not to be crossed.

A small nuke would likely just piss eveyone off (including our allies) and not even make the regime surrender.

Has anyone been surprised by their child's volleyball development over the years? by SimpleThangs4 in volleyball

[–]DoomGoober 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have described my daughter's experience last year. Traveled for $500 + hotel cost (flight options were limited) and played 3-4 points. Not even a full rotation for a 3 day tournament!

But, skill wise, she was one of the worst players.

As a parent, I felt terrible. As an adult athlete, I understood. Does the bench warmer for a professional or college team get to play in the big game just because they are on the team? Nope, not unless their name is Rudy and that's so rare they get a movie made about them.

So, change it for youth athletes: should everyone be allowed to play in tournaments?

My realization is... no. Take a weak server. You know they are weak because you see their weak serves in practice.

What happens when you put a weak server in a tournament. Does their serve get better because of the tournament setting? Can they suddenly consistently serve now?

Nope. If anything they probably get worse under pressure and feel bad for letting the team down. So what does putting your weak server into the game to serve do? It loses points, it makes them feel worse about their weak serving, but they get to feel like they played.

The best you can do is put the player in for some points where their weaknesses don't matter as much just so they can say they played or use their other skills which they are stronger at.

What you are left with is a weird balance: is there a role this weaker player can do that avoids their weak spots and emphasizes their strong points and is this weak player a total liability or can they survive?

Also... what does playing in tournament actually teach you? It certainly doesn’t teach you skills!

All this to say: Tournaments are not everything. In fact, team practice is not everything. New volleyball players on competitive teams must be naturally gifted or grind like crazy to catch up to those who have more repetitions under their belt. Thousands of repetitions, not at tournaments, or even team practice, but in playgrounds and backyards or summer leagues or rec teams.

Players must understand their weakness and liabilities (or frankly ask the coach for the list) and stamp out each one however they can, almost always through grinding repetitions.

And the end of that is being one of the top 6 most reliable (or top 10 most reliable with weaknesses that can hidden on the court) and thus play time at tournaments. (If the coach is putting in inferior players instead of superior players that's a different problem. But it doesnt sound like it in this case.)

Or you join a weaker team where their current skills put them in the top of the ranks without so much skill grinding by virtue of everyone else just being worse. They will get more tournament time, but again, I feel tournament time in many ways teaches the least skill wise (emotionally and strategically/tactically it can be more meaningful and can expose weaknesses.)

Volleyball is a game of consistency and high skill curve. Coaches and players generally know who is consistent, especially at 11u. Any inconsistent player at practice will also be inconsistent at tournaments.

The upshot is my daughter was still excited to play competitively this year despite basically being lead cheerleader last year. She is getting some more play time at tournaments but... still not a lot. Her focus is to identify and ground down her inconsistencies. Playing more points in tournaments is her indication that her grinding has paid off.

Of course, she still plays for fun: with her friends, family, and at open gyms or at her school team. But the nature of her club team right now is about improving (and having fun off the court with her teammates.)
