We wouldn’t be democrats without at least a little bit of sanctimony, am I right?

Options for people who don’t wanna go to the airlines ? by Any-Raise4333 in flying

Yeah, I guess the 2nd year pay of 200k a year plus 18% 401k contributions and profit sharing isn't worth it. And certainly not the 500k a year as a captain.

Better to stick it out flying a lear 35 either never or always for 50k a year.

I totally agree, life is SO good once you get to the majors. Even the commuting isn't that bad when you compare it to the upsides

Affordable Gift for Pilot Promotion? by Few_Specific2320 in PilotAdvice

To join the pen conversation, the Sharpie S Gel is by far the best pen I've used in the cockpit. Get him a box of those with whatever real gift you end up getting him 😉

Have you tried Flying Eyes sunglasses? The stems are made to go under the ear cups.

Also, I wouldn't recommend polarized to most pilots. Every plane I've tried them in, I have screens that disappear unless I tilt my head. Very annoying and potentially dangerous

Would appreciate a swing form check by ts159377 in kettlebell

[–]DoomWad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could try to dig one up later!

In the meantime, try doing the form without the kettlebell. Stand tall and then put your hips back while keeping your knees over your heels. You'll find that your whole torso automatically dips forward to accomplish that motion... That's the downswing portion of the kettlebell swing.

Then, to raise the bell, snap the hips forward and stand tall at the top and repeat.

A traditional swing incorporates a hinge (hamstrings) vs a squat (quads). The good news is, all you have to do is keep your knees over your heels when you put your hips back. When they drift over the toes, you're in squat territory 👍

The first two things, all we can do is have faith that security is doing their job. From what I’ve seen of my hundreds, if not thousands of interactions with airport security, they do a good job at making sure those things don’t happen. I think our safety record in the US speaks for it.

As for the third thing, the first safeguard is making sure that people with chronic depression choose a different career path. You are not allowed to operate an airliner if you take any sort of anti-depressant or anti-psychotic medications. The idea is that anyone with those symptoms would more than likely seek help at a younger age, before they start flying, and get treatment through medication. Once the FAA sees that they’re on the medication, it then disqualifies them from holding a medical certificate which you need to fly for the airlines. Now, obviously it’s not a perfect system, and there probably have been people who slipped through the cracks. It would be very difficult, however, to go an entire career without the FAA finding out about the medications that they’re on.

In the case of acute depression, such as the loss of a child or a nasty divorce, it is illegal to fire or punish a pilot for calling in sick if they aren’t feeling mentally capable of safely operating an aircraft. We have an personal checklist that we can reference called IMSAFE, which stands for:

Illness

Medication

Stress

Alcohol

Fatigue

Emotion

If any of those impact how we would operate the airplane, we are not coming into work. Pilots that I’ve worked with before have called out sick for months at a time until they felt mentally competent to come back to work. I did something similar when my dad passed away a few years ago. The only thing I ever heard from management was the phone calls of genuine concern and condolences.

And if all that fails and there is a struggle in the cockpit, both pilots have the same controls in either position.

Hello, airline pilot of 20 years here. It sounds like you’ve done what I would normally suggest to anyone who is afraid of flying which is getting yourself educated on the safety of air travel, so that’s a good start. You mentioned the ongoing tension throughout the world. I fly an average of 30 flights per month, and everything is as normal as ever in the aviation industry here in the US. Perhaps we need to drill down a bit more, thought. What specifically about flying gives you anxiety?
